Al-Shatti praises Salmiya players after strong start to preseason camp
ISTANBUL, Aug 18: Kuwait's clubs are stepping up preparations for the new season with training camps abroad, highlighted by Qadisiya's ongoing schedule in Turkey, Salmiya's strong start in Cyprus, and Arabi's recent arrival in Dubai. Qadisya will face Saudi side Al-Wehda this evening in its fourth friendly match of the camp. The team previously drew 2-2 with Al-Faisaly, lost narrowly 1-0 to Al-Okhdood, and bounced back with a 2-0 win over Fujairah of the UAE. The team will next meet Bahrain's Sitra on Saturday, a side it is also set to face in the group stage of the Gulf Champions League beginning September 30, before closing out the camp against Al-Orouba of Saudi Arabia on August 28. The camp was hit by sad news as Algerian defender Sofiane Bouchar departed to return home following the death of his mother. Meanwhile, Salmiya got off to a winning start in Turkey, defeating Cyprus' Magusa Turk Gucu 4-1 in its opening friendly. Goals came from Brazilian Alex Lima, Libyan forward Sanousi Al-Hadi, and Fawaz Ayed, who scored twice. Head coach Nasser Al-Shatti praised his players for their discipline and commitment in training, stressing that their focus has allowed the preparation program to run smoothly. He expressed satisfaction with the team's display in the first friendly, noting that the players executed the tactics well and benefited from the test. Salmiya is set to play two more friendlies against Turkey's Serik Spor (August 21) and Antalyaspor (August 27). In Dubai, Al-Arabi launched its training camp yesterday as it prepares for the new season. The team will remain in the UAE until August 29 and is scheduled to play two friendlies before returning to Kuwait in early September. Al-Arabi will open its Zain Premier League campaign against Al-Shabab on September 12.

Explosive start to the 2025 Saudi Super Cup in Hong Kong
HONG KONG, Aug 18: The 2025 Saudi Super Cup kicks off today in Hong Kong, running from August 19 to 23, featuring Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, Qadsia, and Al-Ahli. The tournament opens with a clash between Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, followed tomorrow by Qadsia taking on Al-Ahli. The winners of both matches will advance to the final on August 23. Al-Ahli was included in this year's Super Cup after Al-Hilal withdrew from the competition. The Saudi Football Federation promptly decided to replace Al-Hilal with Al-Ahli, who finished fifth in the Roshen League. Al-Riyadiya reported that the federation recently approved an urgent amendment to its competition regulations, introducing a clause on withdrawals. The new rule allows the federation to seek financial compensation from any club that withdraws for damages caused. This decision follows Al-Hilal's official withdrawal in July. While the federation accepted the club's apology, the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee imposed a ban on Al-Hilal from participating in the 2026-2027 Super Cup and fined the club 500,000 Saudi Riyals. With Al-Ahli stepping in, the 2025 Saudi Super Cup promises an exciting showdown as the tournament gets underway in Hong Kong.

Arsenal capitalize on Bayindir error to beat Man United
Chelsea draw blank in Crystal Palace stalemate MANCHESTER: Manchester United's expensively-assembled new forward line drew a blank as Arsenal began their quest for the Premier League title by grinding out a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal after the Italian defender pounced on a huge mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. United have splashed out £200 million ($271 million) on new forwards to remedy a lack of punch in the final third. Despite promising debuts, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo failed to find the net, while substitute Benjamin Sesko could not make Arsenal pay for not pursuing their interest in the Slovenian. After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title in 2003/04. The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points as the visitors never got going as an attacking force. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. The new arrivals have at least lifted the mood around Old Trafford and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the performance of Ruben Amorim's men. Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on. However, United's good work was undone by a glaring error from Bayindir, who was deputizing for the injured Andre Onana. The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori the simplest of tasks to head into an unguarded net. Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that came back off the post. Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the face of goal. Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before instead pursuing a move for Viktor Gyokeres as the solution to their need for a number nine. The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour mark by Kai Havertz. Sesko made his entrance moments later to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions. United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish as Mbeumo saw a powerful header expertly clawed out by Raya. But Arsenal held firm to keep pace with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who also won on the opening weekend of the campaign. Earlier, Chelsea suffered a Club World Cup hangover as they were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace to open their Premier League campaign on Sunday. Palace were denied an early opener when Eberechi Eze's free-kick was ruled out by a VAR review for Marc Guehi obstructing the Chelsea wall. New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to snatching a winner for the home side, but the newly-crowned world champions were blunt in attack against a well-organized Palace defence. The Eagles key duo of Guehi and Eze started despite mounting speculation the England internationals are set to join Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively. 'As long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good,' said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. 'They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that's what I expected.' Eze thought he had opened the scoring with a blistering free-kick that had too much power for Robert Sanchez. The goal was disallowed for Guehi's role in creating a gap by man-handling Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall. Chelsea's demolition of European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final last month had raised the Blues' hopes they can challenge for a first Premier League title since 2017. But Enzo Maresca bemoaned his side's lack of preparation time since beating PSG in New York just 35 days ago. 'They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best,' said the Italian. 'We expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances.' Estevao scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras. The Brazilian has been hyped as one of the world's brightest young talents but lacked the composure to finish when he sliced high and wide from the middle of the box. Nottingham Forest made light of manager Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-season fears over a lack of signings with a dominant 3-1 win over a much-changed Brentford. Chris Wood struck twice either side of Dan Ndyoe's debut goal for Forest on a nightmare afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews. 'It was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals,' said Nuno. 'This is why we are insisting on a good balanced squad that gives us options and solutions.' The Bees have lost their manager, captain and top scorer in the off-season. — AFP
