Hawkers question eviction, blame vehicles for traffic mess at Sitabuldi
Nagpur: Street vendors blamed the rising number of vehicles, not hawkers, for traffic congestion on Sitabuldi main road — from Variety Square to Lohapul — and termed their eviction by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and city police unjust.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Abdul Razzaq Quereshi, president of the Nagpur Feriwala Association and a Town Vending Committee (TVC) member, called the recent eviction drive "pre-planned and illegal," claiming the vendors were displaced just a day after the High Court was closed for summer holidays.
"It was a calculated move. Authorities knew they wouldn't get away with this if the court was in session," Quereshi told reporters.
The displaced hawkers have since been shifted to Maharajbagh road.
Quereshi alleged that the eviction violates the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, as the TVC neither passed a resolution nor consulted hawkers. "We were kept in the dark. There was no meeting, no notice, no legal process," he said.
The NMC, however, claimed that the TVC had approved the relocation earlier, which Quereshi and others reportedly boycotted.

This dispute has further deepened the mistrust between hawkers and the administration.
The hawkers are planning to move the High Court on June 9. "If we don't get relief, we will go to the Supreme Court. This is not just about business — it's about our fundamental right to livelihood," Quereshi said, adding that citywide peaceful protests will continue in the meantime.
He also said the relocation to Maharajbagh road was never discussed in earlier 12 TVC meetings.
"Why now? What is the hidden agenda?" he asked.
"The govt is prioritizing parking zones over people's livelihoods. You are clearing space for cars while pushing working-class youth into joblessness. This kind of injustice can only destabilize the city's law and order in the long run," he warned.

Nashik civic body to acquire 250 acres more for Sadhugram; readies compensation model
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to acquire additional 250 acres at Sadhugram in Tapovan area of the city for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela — slated to be held between 2026 and 2028. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With 100 acres of the current 350-acre no-development zone at Sadhugram already under NMC's possession, the remaining land is typically leased from landowners for the duration of the Mela. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has also affirmed the acquisition of this land for Sadhugram. This move is significant given the projected increase in visitors. Around 2.5 lakh sadhus attended the 2015 Kumbh Mela in Nashik, but an estimated 10 lakh sadhus are expected in 2027. Initially, the NMC had envisioned developing Sadhugram on 500 acres. However, to accommodate the anticipated surge in sadhus, the plan was expanded to 1,000 acres in Tapovan — a substantial increase from the 350 acres used for the 2015 Kumbh Mela. Civic chief Manisha Khatri, while talking to TOI, said the municipal corporation plans to acquire additional 250 acres at Tapovan before the Kumbh Mela begins. "We have plans to develop Sadhugram on around 1,000 acres. The remaining land will be taken on lease for the Kumbh Mela period. We are also preparing the proposal seeking funds from the state govt for acquisition of the 250 acres," she said. An NMC official said they have prepared the compensation model for the acquisition of the land at Tapovan in the city. "As per the formula, 50% compensation will be given in cash and 50% as Transfer of Development Rights (TDR)," the official said.

In another notification issued the same day, an exemption was given from tendering to purchase Rs 9 crore worth of fuel, lubricants and other items from HPCL. According to the notifications, a 4(g) exemption was provided under Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act. This exemption allows the home department to directly procure fuel without going through the tender process. However, a condition was placed on the department to ensure quality services at an appropriate price. According to sources, the home department recently requested the finance department for an exemption from the tender process. The fire and emergency services department has over 2,000 vehicles, including fire-fighting vehicles, two-wheelers, and four-wheelers. Home guards department has more than 500 vehicles.

"Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Dy CM directly responsible for tragic stampede": Karnataka LoP R Ashoka
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5 (ANI): Following the death of 11 people in the Bengaluru stampede, Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly, R Ashoka, on Thursday, alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Dy CM DK Shivakumar are directly responsible for the mishap. 'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar are directly responsible for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium and its surroundings,' he said. Ashoka demanded that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a High Court judge probe the incident. Speaking at a press conference, he stated, 'We will not accept an investigation by the District Collector. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is being filed before the High Court Chief Justice. The investigation must be conducted under the supervision of a High Court judge, and an SIT should be formed for this purpose. The report must be submitted directly to the High Court. Justice must be delivered for all these deaths, and those responsible must be punished.' He criticised CM Siddaramaiah for evading responsibility by claiming it was a Cricket Association event and attempting to cover up his mistakes. Ashoka demanded that CM Siddaramaiah and Dy CM DK Shivakumar take moral responsibility and resign. 'How can District Collectors, who work under the CM and report to him, conduct an impartial investigation? They were responsible for planning the event, finalising its framework, and making preparations. It's impossible to believe they would honestly investigate the government's lapses and errors. Deceiving the public and causing deaths is bad enough, but why are they now resorting to self-deception and adding to their sins? Only a judicial probe can deliver justice to innocent lives and their parents. The Congress government must not stoop to such pettiness even in the face of death,' R Ashoka asserted. 'Those who celebrated by lifting the cup and posing for photos didn't show up to carry the bodies of the innocent victims. Those who took selfies at the airport didn't visit the homes of the deceased to shed tears. Those who honoured cricketers with turbans and garlands didn't come to put soil on the graves of the dead. In this heartless government, the lives of ordinary people have no value,' he said. Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Karnataka High Court notified the state government about the stampede and listed the matter for hearing again on June 10. The High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and asked for a further status report. 'We have expressed ourselves to the Advocate General and he has filed a status report, which is taken on record. Registry is directed to register this suo-motu cognisance as a suo-moto WP. Relist on 10th June, Tuesday,' the Court said. (ANI)
