Apple announces Back to School offer on Macs and iPads, to go live from June 17
Consumers can buy one iPad with a promo and one Mac with a promo per customer. It needs to be noted that this offer is not applicable on iPad Mini, iPad 10th Gen, Mac Mini, Mac Pro, Mac Studio or refurbished. With MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, students can opt for Magic Mouse / Magic Trackpad / Magic Keyboard or AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. With iPad Air or iPad Pro, students can opt for either Apple Pencil Pro or AirPods 4.
Apple has said that the Mac and iPad are ideal for students and educators, as they are built from the ground up prioritising security and privacy. These devices excel at everything from productivity to creativity. Moreover, with Apple Intelligence, students can unlock exciting new capabilities that make Mac and iPad powerful tools for an assortment of tasks. Students can also explore their creativity with tools like Image Playground and Genmoji, and even make the most of their writing with Writing Tools.

As part of his anti-India campaign, Trump has slapped 50 per cent tariffs on the country — the highest in the world. He has also specifically threatened Apple in the past with tariffs for making iPhones in the country. However, Bloomberg has reported that Apple will make all four iPhone 17 models —iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air— for the US market in India that will start selling from next month. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Earlier this year, Apple switched the majority of iPhone's manufacturing for the US market to India from China to avoid the fallout of the US-China trade war. In recent years, however, the company had anyway been moving manufacturing outside of China in a bid to diversify supply chains and manufacturing centres. The relocation was driven in part by the experience of Covid-19 when months of factory closures in China disrupted manufacturing timelines and supply chains as both were concentrated in China. As per latest estimates, around 20 per cent of all iPhones sold in the world are currently made in India. Projections say that it could reach 26-40 per cent by 2027. Apple ramps up iPhone manufacturing in India In a sign that Apple has ramped up manufacturing in India, the value of iPhones exported from the country was $7.5 billion in the April-July period, the Bloomberg reported. For comparison, it was $17 billion for the entire last year. Apple's iPhones are currently being made in at least five factories in India run by the Tata group and Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn. In recent years, Tata has taken over operations of contract manufacturers Wistron and Pegatron and has expanded own facility at Tamil Nadu's Hosur. The leaked details about the iPhone 17e sourced from China in a new report hints at incremental hardware upgrades but most of the other aspects will be the same. The iPhone 17e display is likely to get 60Hz refresh rate once again. It will also have the same camera setup but hopefully improved sensors will be offered. Having said that, the report claims the iPhone 17e will get a new design which could make it look more like the iPhone 16 rather than the iPhone 14 model with its single camera module. Apple will offer the new A19 chipset with the iPhone 17e like the premium variant, which will easily give it a big power boost and comparable with the 2026 Android flagships, at least with its performance. We are hoping to see more than one camera on the iPhone 17e and maybe a battery unit that is bigger and faster to charge than the current ones that you get. It is hardly surprising to see the iPhone 16e struggle since its launch. In fact a recent industry report said Apple is able to sell the older iPhone 15 in India but not the iPhone 16E. It said people have not been appealed by the single camera at the back and the lack of functional Apple AI features that could tempt them into splurging on the new model. Britain agrees to drop mandate for Apple to provide 'back door'
Representative Image SAN FRANCISCO: The Trump administration has reached an agreement with Britain to spare Apple from a request that the company create a tool to give British law enforcement organisations access to customers' cloud data. Tulsi Gabbard, US director of national intelligence, said Monday night that Britain had "agreed to drop its mandate for Apple to provide a 'back door' that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties." Britain's decision to back off the policy comes after Apple spent months lobbying officials in Washington and rolled back an encrypted storage feature for British users. In the face of govt pressure around the world, the company has been resolute that it won't create a back door that allows access to phones or encrypted user data because it is afraid such a tool could be abused. Much of Apple's predicament in Britain played out in private after the govt issued a secret order this year. The request came after Britain amended its Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, which allows it to compel companies to turn over data and communications to law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Apple helped make the secret order public by declaring in Feb that iPhone users in Britain would begin seeing messages on their phones saying the company no longer offered its Advanced Data Protection feature. The capability, which remained available in the US, had allowed British users to encrypt almost all of their iCloud data, including messages,notes, photos and backups. Gabbard said Britain's agreement would "ensure Americans' private data remains private and our Constitutional rights and civil liberties are protected." nyt
