
Lotus says it is NOT planning to move sports car production to the US
Lotus is not closing its UK factory, the heritage sports car maker has confirmed, despite reports over the weekend that it was looking to relocate production to the United States.
The British low-volume manufacturer has insisted that 'the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand' and that 'there are no plans to close' its Hethel plant in Norfolk.
The Financial Times first reported that it was reviewing a move to overseas production to get around Donald Trump's tariffs on foreign-built cars - putting 1,300 jobs at risk at Hethel.
The company has since confirmed on X that it is 'actively exploring' new global market opportunities but is 'continuing normal operations'.
Lotus is one of the manufacturers (along with JLR and Rolls-Royce) that ceased shipments to the US following the introduction of tariffs on cars imported to the States in April.
While the US is a significant market for the lightweight sports car brand, it has since confirmed that the UK is its 'largest commercial market in Europe'.
Lotus delivered 12,000 vehicles in 2024, a year-on-year increase of over 70 per cent, with the European market making up nearly 40 per cent of deliveries, and North America 21 per cent. China made up 25 per cent.
In a full statement made over the weekend, Lotus said: 'The UK is the heart of the Lotus brand - home to our sports car manufacturing, global design centre, motorsport operations, and Lotus Engineering. It is also our largest commercial market in Europe.
'Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory. We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market.
'We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.'
The Financial Times claimed business secretary Jonathan Reynolds was due to meet with Lotus officials on Sunday 29 June, and that the Government was prepared to offer Lotus support to protect UK jobs.
Lotus told the paper in a statement that it had paused production of the Emira from mid-May to manage inventories amid supply chain issues related to US tariffs, but refused to comment further on 'a rumour' about Hethel's closure.
Hethel has been home of Lotus manufacturing since 1966. Acquired by Geely in 2017, it has since undergone a £100 million investment. However Lotus has been reducing costs of late as it experiences continued losses.
In April, 270 workers were laid off at the site due to a 'proposed business restructure to ensure sustainable operations' as it faced 'volatile and evolving market conditions including the US tariffs and shifting consumer demand for sports cars'.
In a call last week, Lotus chief executive Feng Qingfeng told investors that it wanted to build more cars in America to get around the higher tariffs on foreign-built cars - now 10 per cent on the first 100,00 cars into the US.
'We believe that localisation is a feasible plan,' he said.
'We are trying to leverage our US strategy to catch up the losses due to the tariff hike,' he added.
Lotus has confirmed to This is Money its commitment to the UK, and that it would not be making further comment at the moment.

The 940-page legislation, which the Senate advanced on a 51-49 vote late Saturday, was still taking shape even as the 'vote-a-rama' began — a process in which senators can offer an unlimited number of amendments — with GOP leaders hoping to use it to satisfy concerns from wavering factions. Businesses urge EU not to weaken sustainability rules
July 1 (Reuters) - More than 100 companies and investors on Tuesday warned against rolling back European sustainability rules that they said support economic growth, as the EU negotiates cuts to the rules to reduce costs for local industries. A group of 29 businesses and 80 investors and financial institutions including EDF, Nokia ( opens new tab and Allianz said in a statement that rather than hindering growth, the rules were "conducive to competitiveness and growth, as well as long-term value creation and subsequent returns for investors". European Union policymakers are negotiating proposals that would loosen the bloc's corporate sustainability reporting rules for a large majority of businesses, and soften a policy requiring firms to check their supply chains for abuse, amid criticism from some governments and industries that red tape hinders productivity. Germany, France and some businesses have demanded the reporting requirements be dramatically reduced, but environmental campaigners and now a broader group of companies and investors say the rules are key to helping them manage climate risks and drive capital to the green transition. By promoting transparency and responsible business conduct, the rules are conducive to growth, better risk management and to reorienting investment to green technologies and growth across the bloc, said the statement, which was also signed by IKEA's parent company Ingka Group. "Where there is room for smart simplification, let's tweak the regulation, but we need to stay the course and be proud of it to assert our leadership," Carine de Boissezon, chief impact officer at EDF, said in a statement. The group recommended that the EU reporting rules apply to companies with more than 500 employees, and require firms to adopt "transition plans" showing how they're aligning with climate goals. The European Commission has proposed exempting companies with fewer than 1,000 employees - cutting more than 80% of the roughly 50,000 currently covered. The law currently applies to firms with more than 250 employees. Some EU lawmakers want to scale back the laws further to only cover companies with at least 3,000 employees. EU countries and lawmakers must both approve the final changes to the rules.

AN Airbnb owner has been ordered to tear down a massive 40ft-high "prison-camp watchtower" after furious neighbours complained. The "monstrous" structure was built at the £5,000-a-week holiday let in Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales, without planning permission. 2 2 And fuming locals nearby say the eyesore addition is disturbing their day-to-day lives in a seaside town. Planning permission for the towering "garden room" was turned down last year. And neighbours are celebrating after another bid has now also been rejected by officials who say the tower must be removed. Nearby neighbour Nick Whitmore, 35, who lives with his partner and three young children said their "dream home" had been marred by the platform and cabin. Nick said: "It's advertised on Airbnb year-round, bringing noise, light pollution, and worse. "The impact on my partner, our three children, and our neighbours is horrendous. "The structure dominates our house and garden, as well as our neighbours'. It looks into my daughter's bedroom. He added: "We are a local, hard-working family with three children under the age of 10. "My partner and I worked very, very hard to buy our dream home, just up the road from the children's school, various public parks, with a bedroom for each of our children, and a nice garden for them to enjoy. "This has now been taken away from us as we back onto a busy Airbnb and, since Jan 2024, a building site." The holiday let was purchased by a Sheffield-based property owner in December 2023. Neighbours reported the structure to the council and JAM Domestic Properties Ltd submitted a planning application - which was refused. The owners had described the 'breathtaking' £700,000 four-bedroom property as 'the epitome of luxury '. Nick said: "We alerted Conwy council who asked the company to stop work. "They did, and submitted a retrospective planning application, which was refused in June 2024 after numerous neighbour objections. "With no appeal by the 16 December 2024 deadline, we thought the council would follow through and move to enforce their own refusal. "We assumed relief was near. Instead, two weeks ago, earlier in March 2025, the owner submitted a near-identical planning application. "We've now endured over 15 months of this situation, with Conwy sitting on their hands while local families and residents suffer daily." Families living next-door are furious at the13m high 'concrete plateau' giving clear views into their properties and blighting their lives. Work on the tower - which would provide panoramic views of the village and neighbouring Penrhyn Bay - began last year, only to be paused when a planning application was turned down. The holiday rental - called Gardd y Llys - is a contemporary property in one of the most upmarket residential areas of Rhos-on-Sea. 'OVERBEARING' Neighbours Stephen and Hazel Walburn also wrote a letter of objection to the council. "The cabin is 13m above our main living area and certainly feels to us to be out of character and overbearing," they wrote. "Its scale and appearance are unlike other garden buildings in the area. It fails to enhance the local environment, commanding attention not unlike a prison camp watchtower." They added: "It dominates the roofscape and is alien and incongruous." Conwy council said: "An enforcement notice has been served which requires the removal of the structure." The notice was served on 17 June and the developer has been given 10 weeks from that date to launch an appeal. The application by JAM Domestic Properties read: "Views from the raised platform into neighbouring properties were recognised as being available from the initial planning consent. "The proposed development is not considered to lead to an acceptable increase to this and is not considered to have a detrimental impact on privacy or residential amenity to neighbouring properties, and therefore would be acceptable on this basis." A Conwy Council spokeswoman previously said: "Planning permission was granted in 2016 for a smaller garden structure on this site. "In February 2024, it was brought to our attention that a larger outbuilding was being constructed. "Following an investigation by the planning enforcement officer, the owners agreed to cease work and to submit a planning application to regularise the work.
