Hayley Nolan hoping for rub of the green after challenging year
Nolan played every game in the Eagles' Championship-winning campaign in 2023/24, but her dream first year in the Women's Super League was soured by injuries; a shoulder problem sidelined the Kildare native until December, then a training ground knock in February set her back a few more weeks.
Still, the 28-year-old defender showed her quality whenever she got on the field, and was rewarded with a new Palace deal in January.
Now, she's back in the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time in over two years, desperate for a chance to shine in the friendlies against the USA on Friday (2am) and Sunday (8pm).
"I know it's part and parcel of being a footballer but when you work so hard to get an opportunity to play in the WSL and then you suffer a shoulder injury that keeps you out until Christmas and follow it up with another injury in February, I think it's fair to say I didn't have the best of luck," Nolan reflected.
"To play for Ireland is the dream for any footballer and for me, pulling on the Irish shirt, there is no better feeling. Mentally, it has been really difficult for me being injured, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It is a really difficult time, especially when you have massive ambitions and goals to help Palace and to help Ireland, but I am fit and healthy now... I have to make sure I take this opportunity."
"I know my strengths and what I can offer."
This week is a full-circle moment for Nolan whose last appearance for her country actually came in the States back in April 2023, when Vera Pauw brought the Girls in Green to Missouri and Texas.
Given Diane Caldwell, Niamh Fahey and Louise Quinn have all retired, there could be room for an experienced centre-half in Ward's plans; indeed the head coach has said on several occasions she wants more leaders in the dressing-room.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Nolan said. "I want to help the squad push on, we have massive ambitions of (World Cup) qualification and that's the goal of the team.
"I have had a few conversations with Carla, stayed in contact but I've been injured and it's hard to put yourself up for selection when you're not fit and healthy. I played the last six games of the WSL and performed well and It has merited this call-up and me getting in.
"I know my strengths and what I can offer and I think that can help the team a lot and that is what I am here to do."
Nolan has been a guiding voice for two younger compatriots at Palace: Izzy Atkinson - released by the club a few weeks ago - and Abbie Larkin. Their presence has helped Nolan as much as she's helped them; a little Irish cohort to lighten the mood during the trickier times.
"I'm smiling because I love those girls, so much talent from both of them," Nolan said.
"It has been great to have them there at Palace for last 18 months, wonderful for me, it has been like a taste of home.
"When you go into the changing room and see Abbie and Izzy, they are always in good spirits and I'm hopeful that I am a mentor to them. They have great talent, you can see Abbie in the last camp, how much talent she has.
"Izzy's another tremendous talent, I think everyone knows that. There's a lot of possibilities there for Izzy. When she came into Palace and we got promoted, she had a great time there. I'm really looking forward to seeing where her future takes her. She's back in (Ireland) camp now too and I'm sure that she's hungry as well to show what she can do at this stage."
As for the Camino, a chance to tune out, walk on and catch up with the family was warmly embraced.
"We did about 20k a day, my family did the entire walk. I was supposed to be off so I only did half of it.
"I'm the youngest and it's difficult because we all have different jobs and as a footballer I don't get that much time off. So we just said we would take this opportunity to get away as a family and do something different.
"I absolutely loved it. I've two older sisters and it was the first time in a long time to spend a good period together with them. It was good craic. I've never done anything like it, normally it is just the beach or pool and you don't get to spend real time together. Whereas you have no choice when you're walking."

Sky pundit angers fans after calling Keith Andrews 'British'
Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson triggered a familiar nerve among Ireland fans on Saturday. Dawson mistakenly labelled Keith Andrews as 'British' while discussing how he might get on as the new Brentford boss. Andrews, who earned 35 caps for Ireland during his playing days, endured a 3-1 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in his first game as a Premier League manager. Michael Dawson sparked fury among Ireland fans. Pic: Visionhaus/Getty Images During the pre-match discussion on Sky Sports, Dawson remarked that Andrews getting the nod to replace Thomas Frank at Brentford was a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Unsurprisingly, the ex-Hull City defender's comment sparked a bit of irritation among Irish football fans and they made sure to vent their frustration on social media. One user wrote: 'Michael Dawson referred to Keith Andrews as a 'British manager' on Sky Sports today. Thought Sky Sports like to educate people on this matter or maybe that's just for the Irish women's team. Dawson and Sky Sports, clowns.' Another said: 'FYI Michael Dawson: Keith Andrews is Irish, not British! What is it about Sky Sports News getting things like that wrong?' A third added: 'Michael Dawson just said with reference to Keith Andrews that it's great to see a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Daft in this day and age really.' One other person saw the lighter side of it and quipped: 'We need Clinton Morrison to start calling the likes of Eddie Howe Irish.' Andrews will no doubt have more to worry about than pundits getting his nationality wrong after his opening day anguish against Forest. There were question marks about the Dubliner's appointment at the club with fans immediately presuming his lack of experience won't get him far. Andrews joined Brentford in July 2024 as a set-piece coach and was promoted to the major role after Thomas Frank's departure this summer. However, conceding from a corner five minutes into his first match set an ominous tone for a new manager whose specialty was set-pieces. Andrews has had a tough start at Brentford. Pic:Fans have not held back their criticism of the 44-year-old online. One said: 'Keith Andrews will be the first PL manager sacked this season. Completely out of his depth and everyone knew it back in June when he was appointed.' Another wrote: 'Get Keith Andrews the f*** out of here. An absolute joke of an appointment by Brentford. Feel sorry for their players and fans.' A third simply added: 'Brentford are playing like a team managed by Keith Andrews.' In fairness to Andrews, he was handed a pretty nightmarish task replacing Frank at the club. Not only did the long-serving boss depart but Brentford also lost two key players with star man Bryan Mbeumo moving to Manchester United and captain Christian Norgaard heading to Arsenal. On top of these, talented striker Yoane Wissa is heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and is essentially unavailable for selection until the move is complete. A couple of fans shared sympathy for Andrews, understanding the immediate obstacles thrust upon him. One fan said: 'Felt sorry for Keith Andrews. He clearly wanted Wissa in his squad and in his team today but he's obviously not in the right frame of mind after being tapped up. He wants the situation sorted. I don't understand why Newcastle don't just pay the asking price and get it over with.' Another agreed: 'Keith Andrews looked gutted today. He really wanted Wissa to play … it could have made a big difference. Now he has to replace him, so selling him quickly is a must.'

Tottenham closing in on £55m deal for Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze
Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their pursuit of Eberechi Eze by holding further talks geared towards signing the England forward. However, it is understood Crystal Palace want to line up a replacement before sanctioning his sale. Spurs, who confirmed the contract extension of captain Cristian Romero on Monday, are longstanding admirers of Eze, having made a move for him last summer. They are even more keen to get him now that James Maddison is out with an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Dejan Kulusevski, another of the club's key attacking midfielders, is out with a knee problem. Eze is represented by the influential CAA Base agency, which has close links to Spurs, and he is open to the transfer. The 27-year-old forward has also been tracked by Arsenal , the club he supported as a boy and played for during his formative years. Eze's contract at Palace contained a £68 million (€78.8 million) release clause, but it expired last Friday. Spurs hope to get him for around £55m plus bonuses. Eze's previous club, Queens Park Rangers, are entitled to 15 per cent of any profits that Palace make on him. Palace paid around £19m to QPR for the player in 2020. READ MORE Romero has re-signed at Spurs until 2029 and it represents something of a turnaround for him after he was linked with a move away at the start of the summer. The Argentina centre-half has made no secret of his ambition to one day play in Spain and he was of interest to Atlético Madrid. But having been given the Spurs captaincy after the departure of Son Heung-min to Los Angeles FC, the 27-year-old has re-emphasised his commitment. Right-back Djed Spence has also signed a new long-term contract with the club. [ New Tottenham 'Hotspaw' pet partner leaves Spurs fans howling with frustration Opens in new window ] Palace, meanwhile, have targeted Leicester's Bilal El Khannouss and Christos Tzolis of Club Brugge as potential replacements for Eze. The club are believed to have failed with an initial offer of £20m for El Khannouss, whose release clause expired at the weekend, with Leicester thought to want around £26m for the Morocco forward. Palace have also made an offer of £25m for Tzolis, a Greece international who spent three seasons at Norwich. [ 'When it comes to supporting club football, Liverpool don't really count as an English team' Opens in new window ] Manager Oliver Glasner said he expected Eze to play for Palace in the Conference League playoff first leg against Fredrikstad at Selhurst Park on Thursday. If he did, he would still be able to play for another team in the league phase of European competition this season. Marc Guéhi is also expected to feature on Thursday as Liverpool have yet to match Palace's £40m valuation of the England defender, whose contract expires at the end of the season. Guéhi is understood to be willing to stay at Selhurst Park and leave on a free transfer although the Palace chairman, Steve Parish, has admitted that he would prefer to sell the 25-year-old this month. [ TV View: Tough day at the office for Keith Andrews, but don't expect sympathy from Roy Keane Opens in new window ] Palace had considered the Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande as a potential replacement for Guéhi but the 21-year-old is expected to be out for six weeks with a muscle injury and is unlikely to move this window. Palace have also shown an interest in Jakub Kiwior, but the Poland defender is believed to prefer to move overseas having been left out of Arsenal's squad for the game against Manchester United on Sunday. Porto are in talks over a season-long loan for Kiwior with an obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
