Hindustan Times26-04-2025

Lauding the Centre government's decision to open Parkash Singh Badal Skill India Centre, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Friday that the SAD patriarch was a true mass leader with a futuristic vision.
Addressing a gathering on an event to mark the second death anniversary of the late chief minister at his native place in Muktsar's Badal village, Sukhbir said: 'It was during the Badal saab tenure when Punjab became the first state in India to start a skill development push. Later, it was adopted by the Union government to empower youth with the skills to meet the diverse demands of different industries.'
According to Sandeep Kaura, adviser, national skill development corporation, the upcoming project would be started at the premises of Mata Jaswant Kaur School, run by the Badal family, having a capacity to train about 2,000 youth in different trades, healthcare, construction, agricultural technology and sports infrastructure.
Handing over the project approval documents to Sukhbir on the death anniversary, Kaura said the initiative has been conceptualised as a befitting tribute to the late CM.
'I have been entrusted by the central authorities to supervise the project and we hope to make it functional in the next 2-3 months. The centre would have the capacity to train youth to cater to the job industry in India and abroad. Youth will be assisted to make them eligible for jobs in different foreign countries for high-demand jobs in diverse sectors of construction work and other fields,' added Kaura.
During his address, the SAD chief gave a call to party workers to make the party win the next assembly elections in 2027 while following the political footprints of the late Parkash Singh Badal.
'Bapu Badal dedicated his life to the overall development without any discrimination of faith. He was liked and respected, cutting across political or religious lines. His political legacy is our asset,' asserted Sukhbir.
Akal Takht jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj remembered the late CM's role in constructing the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur War Memorial at Chappar Chiri, Mohali, and the Sham Singh Attariwala War Memorial on Heritage Street in Amritsar.
Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Harjinder Singh Dhami was also present on the occasion and cautioned the SAD leadership to stay away from those who indulge in sycophancy and backbiting.
Former finance minister and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Manpreet Badal said a true tribute to the late CM is in working against anti-national forces, unemployment and batting for inclusive development.

Protest heat rises in poll-bound Ludhiana

Bathinda: With the Ludhiana West byelection looming, the city is now on the radar of protesters of various hues — a pattern observed in previous poll-bound areas like Bathinda during the SAD-BJP tenure and Patiala-Chamkaur Sahib under the Congress govt. While some employee and unemployed unions are already holding agitations, the family of a deceased village sarpanch and members of various organisations are set to descend on Ludhiana on Thursday for a candle march. Their target: Guru Harsahai MLA Fauja Singh Sarari and his personal assistant, Bachittar Singh, demanding immediate action against them for alleged abetment to suicide. The protesters plan to converge near Gate Number 1 of Punjab Agriculture University, a stone's throw from the AAP election office for the Ludhiana West byelection. They intend to hold a protest march. Jashan Bawa, 24, the sarpanch of Trinda village and an AAP member, died by suicide on May 31. His family alleges that Bawa was driven to the extreme step due to continuous harassment by MLA Sarari and his personal assistant. On June 9, villagers and various organisations staged a protest at Lakho Ke Behram police station, disrupting the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway to demand justice. Ferozepur police have formed a special investigations team (SIT), comprising two SP-level officers and one DSP, to investigate the matter and determine the MLA's alleged role in the incident. MLA Sarari has denied the allegations, attributing them to a smear campaign by certain individuals, including members of his own party. Meanwhile, a separate wave of protests is set to hit Ludhiana on June 16, organised by the Narinderdeep death action committee. They are demanding a judicial inquiry into the alleged custodial death of 34-year-old IELTS teacher Narinderdeep, who died in Bathinda on May 23. The committee is also demanding the nomination of the CIA-2 in-charge in the case, the arrest of implicated police officers, a government job for a bereaved family member, and compensation. None from KCR family will be allowed into Cong till I am there: Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Wednesday said no member of BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao's family will have an entry into as long as he was at the helm and termed them as 'enemies' of Telangana. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CM was replying to queries in an informal chat with reporters in New Delhi, before returning to Hyderabad after his three-day trip, regarding speculations over BRS MLC K Kavitha following her letter to KCR recently and her subsequent statements. He dubbed her rebellion as a family drama to seek people's attention as BRS had become almost irrelevant in Telangana politics, drawing a parallel with the Telugu movie 'Assembly Rowdy'. The CM said despite Kavitha openly stating that 'devils' have gathered around KCR, the BRS chief was yet to respond to his daughter's accusations. "The entire KCR family is trying to ensure that political discussions revolve around them. But they are traitors of Telangana," Revanth alleged. When asked to comment on KCR's appearance before the PC Ghose commission probing Kaleshwaram project, the CM said: "Today, KCR gave his version of the Kaleshwaram project to the commission. In two days, I will come out with all the details of the project in front of the media. The people of Telangana should know the facts." He also slammed Union minister G Kishan Reddy, accusing him of creating hurdles in the development of Telangana. "Kishan Reddy is acting at the behest of KCR. Several infrastructure projects such as the Regional Ring Road have been delayed due to his interference. I ensured land acquisition for Cherlapally railway station," he said, explaining the state govt's proactive role. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Kishan Reddy has not brought a single key project to Telangana from the Centre. But, if he comes forward for development of the state, I am ready to hold a review meeting on projects with him. I want to ask Kishan Reddy whether he ever gave a report on Telangana projects or at least asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant a project to Telangana. Did Kishan Reddy ever mention Telangana issues in the Union Cabinet?" Revanth asked. Pointing out that Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman took Metro rail to Chennai and another Union minister took Metro rail project to Karnataka, he said that Kishan Reddy did nothing for Telangana. 'Naxalism reduced in Telangana due to Indira's land reforms' Responding to queries on Naxalism, Revanth Reddy said their ideology will exist in some form or the other as long as societal inequalities persist. After Indira Gandhi became PM, land reforms were brought in as a result of which Naxalism declined in Telangana. Indira brought the slogan of 'land belongs to tillers' and distributed land pattas to lakhs of SC and ST families, he said. The previous Congress govts also built houses for the homeless, he said.

5,500 Annapurna Bhawans to have fair price shops, common service centres

Lucknow: Around 5,500 upcoming 'Annapurna Bhawans' will be a blend of fair price shops and common service centres (CSC) provisioning essential govt and non-govt services to citizens in rural and urban centres of Uttar Pradesh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The key feature will be the hallmark of these centres which would be constructed across all districts – the state govt plans to set up at least 75 Annapurna Bhawans in each district. The development comes a week after the cabinet gave its nod to step up the construction of Annapurna Bhawan by utilizing funds and sources other than Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). These centres may now be set up using MP/MLA Local Area Development Fund, tourism development fund, Bundelkhand Vikas Nidhi or any other govt-approved scheme. The feature comes as an add-on after the successful implementation of PM Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana, Centre's flagship scheme that was put in place at the peak of coronavirus pandemic. The state govt has already set up around 3,500 Annapurna Bhawans. "Another 2,000 are in the pipeline," food and civil supplies minister Satish Sharma told TOI. Currently, there are around 80,000 fair price shops in the state. Sharma said that selected shops would be shifted to Annapurna Bhawan free of cost. "The objective of the scheme is to improve the accessibility of fair price shops and ensure their transparent operation," he said. In a communique to all divisional commissioners, principal secretary, food and civil supplies, Ranveer Prasad said that each Annapurna Bhawan would be constructed over an area of around 484 sq feet. The shop will comprise two sections – one for the fair price shop, the other for CSC. These centres will also have a 96 sq ft verandah, which would serve as a waiting area. The district administration will choose the working agency – gram panchayat in rural and development authority in urban areas.
