Felon accused of trying to rape woman after chokehold in Hell's Kitchen
Anthony Smith, 37, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with attempted rape and strangulation in connection with the incident in Midtown over the weekend, police said.

Smith allegedly came up from behind the woman and violently wrapped his arm around her neck while she was walking near 47th Street and Eighth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the NYPD.
The victim temporarily lost consciousness and woke up to find Smith's hands on her private area, police allege. Smith then got spooked and ran off.
The woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for neck pain.
The suspect was taken into police custody at the 5th Precinct in Manhattan on Wednesday morning before he was charged. His arraignment was pending on Wednesday.
Smith has served time in the Bronx for attempted robbery and promoting prison contraband, according to Department of Corrections records. He was released in 2023.
His attorney could not immediately be reached.

Woman shot while sitting inside vehicle in Washington Park neighborhood
A 27-year-old woman was wounded after being hit by gunfire early Friday morning in the Washington Park neighborhood. The shooting happened around 4 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Wabash Avenue. Chicago police said that the woman was sitting inside a vehicle with two other people when an unknown sedan pulled up alongside them. A passenger and an unknown woman from inside shot at them. The victim was hit in the right ankle and grazed in the left leg. She was dropped off at Provident Hospital in good condition. No other injuries were reported. The suspects fled southbound, and no one is in custody. Area 1 detectives are investigating.

Man injured in Fort Lauderdale stabbing, one person detained by police
One person was detained by police after an early morning stabbing in Fort Lauderdale. According to police, around 2 a.m. officers were sent to a home in the 1400 block of SW 32 Court to check out reports of a stabbing. This is north of I-595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. A man told the officers he had asked a neighbor for help after he was stabbed. The man was taken to the hospital, the extent of his injuries were not released. "After receiving additional information on scene, officers immediately made entry into the residence and located an adult female victim," police said. The woman was rushed to the hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries. Police have not said how she was injured. Investigators said the suspect, who is known to both the man and the woman, was found inside the home and detained "This is an isolated incident and is believed to be domestic in nature," police said.
