Movie Maniac: Just in time: Another ‘Superman' for the ages

Miami Herald11-07-2025
If the world ever needed a 'Superman,' it's right now.
The latest big-screen adaptation of the classic DC Comic bursts into theaters this week, amid explosive hype. And amid real-life political turmoil.
'Superman is the story of America,' director James Gunn ('Guardians of the Galaxy') said in an interview with the UK's Sunday Times. 'An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.'
Gunn's new vision finds Superman fighting to reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way, he soon finds himself in a world that views these as old-fashioned.
Relative newcomer David Corenswet (Netflix's 'Hollywood') stars as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (TV's 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel') as Lois Lane and British import Nicholas Hoult ('Nosferatu,' TV's 'The Great') as Lex Luthor.
Superman was created in 1934 by Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster before making his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Since then, there have been numerous incarnations of the Man of Steel, including many movie adaptations.
Here's a look at some of the previous films:
'Superman and the Mole-Men' (1951) – This was the first feature-length Superman movie, directed by Lee Sholem and starring George Reeves as our hero and Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane. Reeves would go on to star in the TV series 'The Adventures of Superman' from 1952 to 1958.
'Superman: The Movie' (1978) – Richard Donner directed Christopher Reeve as Superman, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. The film was a critical and commercial success, prompting several sequels that were up-and-down, at best (1981's 'Superman II,' 1983's 'Superman III' and 1987's 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace').
'Superman Returns' (2006) – Bryan Singer ('The Usual Suspects,' 'X-Men') directed Brandon Routh as Superman, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Singer's moody take on the superhero garnered mixed reviews and lackluster box office.
'Man of Steel' (2013) – Usually over-the-top director Zack Snyder ('300') lent his frenetic style to a higher-action vision of the tale with Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. This spawned several follow-ups by Snyder starring Cavill: 2016's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,' 2017's 'Justice League' (co-directed by Joss Whedon) and 2021's 'Zack Snyder's Justice League,' a four-hour extended cut of the original. Excessive? Perhaps. But Superman is anything but subtle.

Matt Shakman On Why ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Didn't Give Continuity To ‘Thunderbolts' Post-Credits Scene

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains details about . Director Matt Shakman is explaining why The Fantastic Four: First Steps didn't give continuity to the post-credits scene in Thunderbolts from earlier this year. More from Deadline 'Avengers: Doomsday' Cast Photos: All The Actors Confirmed For Marvel Movie Jake Schreier Teases 'X-Men' Reboot: 'It's Just Inherently Interesting & Complex Material' 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' $170M Promo Push Boosted By Little Caesars, Zillow, Pop-Tarts & More; Pic Eyes $200M U.S. Box Office Cume In 2nd Frame The Marvel Studios film starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not in the same timeline as the other films. Earth-616 is the primary universe where most of the storylines take place, whereas First Steps takes place in Earth-828. At the end of Thunderbolts earlier this year, audiences were teased with the arrival of the Fantastic Four to Earth-616, but this was not referenced in the latest Marvel film, and Shakman is revealing why. 'No, no, no, because the Thunderbolts* end credit scene was also created, you know, relatively late in my process too, so that was not something that I was familiar with because it hadn't been created at the time that I was working on my script, you know?' the filmmaker told CinemaBlend. RELATED: He continued, 'I often use the metaphor of it's, you know, like a relay race, right? You pass the baton, you run your section of it as hard and fast as you can, do the best you can with your version of Fantastic Four – Earth 828, this world – and then you pass the baton, in this case to the Russo brothers.' RELATED: Although The Fantastic Four: First Steps didn't tease their arrival in the main universe, Shakman did hint at where the MCU is taking the superheroes next. In an end-credits scene, Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom shows up and engages with Franklin Richards, the son of Sue Storm (Kirby) and Reed Richards (Pascal). The continuation to this storyline will play out in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to be released on December 18, 2026. ‘Fubar' Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is not proceeding with a third season of Arnold Schwarzenegger's spy action series Fubar. The decision comes about a month and a half after Season 2 launched on the platform on June 12. It follows a surprisingly soft return for the series, which, likely fueled by Schwarzenegger's global star power, had a strong debut in May 2023 and also stars Monica Barbaro who became an Oscar nominee between Seasons 1 and 2 for A Complete Unknown. Julia Whelan's Book With Season 2 released more than two years after Season 1 dropped, Fubar barely made Netflix's Top 10 for English-language series in its first week, landing in the last spot with 2.2M views from Thursday through Sunday, down from about 11M views for the show's Season 1 premiere weekend. Season 2 peaked at #7 in its first full week with 3.3M views and logged one more #10 finish in Week 3 with 1.8M views before dropping out of the Top 10. This still is a rare Netflix cancellation of 2025, joining another sophomore action drama, The Recruit, and freshmen Pulse and The Residence. The streamer has renewed close to 20 scripted shows since the start of the year, most recently limited series Untamed for Season 2, Shane Gillis' comedy Tires for Season 3 and romantic dramas Ransom Canyon for Season 2 and Virgin River for Season 8. Fubar centers on a CIA operative (Schwarzenegger) on the verge of retirement who discovers a family secret and is forced to go back into the field for one last job. Carrie-Anne Moss joined the cast in Season 2 as Greta Nelso, a former East German spy who has a passionate history with Luke Brunner (Schwarzenegger). Season 2 also stars Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Aparna Brielle, Guy Burnet, Andy Buckley, Jay Baruchel, Barbara Eve Harris and Scott Thompson. Nick Santora serves as showrunner and executive produces with Schwarzenegger. Additional executive producers are Adam Higgs, Scott Sullivan, Phil Abraham, Amy Pocha, Seth Cohen and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell.
