Donald Trump warns sanctions against Iranian oil buyers amid nuclear talks delay: ‘All purchases… must stop NOW!'

Mint02-05-2025

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened sanctions on anyone who buys Iranian oil, a warning that came after planned talks over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program were postponed.
Trump wrote on social media, 'All purchases of Iranian Oil, or Petrochemical products, must stop, NOW!' He said any country or person who buys those products from Iran will not be able to do business with the United States 'in any way, shape, or form.'
It was unclear how Trump would implement such a ban as he threatened to levy secondary sanctions on nations that import Iranian oil. But his statement risked further escalating tensions with China — Iran's leading customer — at a time when the relationship is severely strained over the U.S. president's tariffs.
Based on tanker tracking data, the U.S. Energy Information Administration concluded in a report published last October that 'China took nearly 90% of Iran's crude oil and condensate exports in 2023.' Trump has separately placed 145% tariffs on China as a way to raise federal revenues and rebalance global trade.
Trump's social media threat came after Oman announced planned nuclear negotiations for this coming weekend had been postponed. Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi made the announcement in a post on the social platform X.
'For logistical reasons we are rescheduling the US Iran meeting provisionally planned for Saturday May 3rd,' he wrote. 'New dates will be announced when mutually agreed.'
Al-Busaidi, who has mediated the talks through three rounds so far, did not elaborate.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also blamed 'logistical and technical reasons' for the postponement.
'On Iran's part, there is no change in our determination to secure a negotiated solution,' he wrote on X. 'We are more determined than ever to achieve a just and balanced deal: guaranteeing an end to sanctions, and creating confidence that Iran's nuclear program will forever remain peaceful while ensuring that Iranian rights are fully respected.'
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, newly tapped to take over the duties of national security adviser in addition to his current role as America's top diplomat, reiterated that if Iran wants nuclear power plants, it can import enriched uranium.
'Iran simply needs to say, 'We've agreed to no longer enrich,'' Rubio said on Fox News Channel's 'Hannity' on Thursday night. About the talks, he added, 'This is the best opportunity they're going to have.'
Meanwhile, a person familiar with the U.S. negotiations said America 'had never confirmed its participation' in a fourth round of talks in Rome. However, the person said the U.S. expected the talks to occur 'in the near future.' The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door negotiations.
Rome will see the Vatican begin its conclave next week to pick a new pope after the death of Pope Francis. Two other rounds of U.S.-Iran talks have been held in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
The talks seek to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some of the crushing economic sanctions the U.S. has imposed on the Islamic Republic closing in on a half-century of enmity. The negotiations have been led by Araghchi and U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to unleash airstrikes targeting Iran's program if a deal isn't reached. Iranian officials increasingly warn that they could pursue a nuclear weapon with their stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels.
The U.S. president with his threat on social media would be going after Iran's major economic resource. It produced an average of 2.9 million barrels a day in 2023 of crude oil, according to the Energy Information Administration.
Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers did limit Tehran's program. However, Trump unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018, setting in motion years of attacks and tensions. The wider Middle East also remains on edge over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the U.S. continues an airstrike campaign, called 'Operation Rough Rider,' that has been targeting Yemen's Houthi rebels, who long have been backed by Iran. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth early Thursday warned Iran over the rebels.
'Message to IRAN: We see your LETHAL support to The Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing,' he wrote. 'You know very well what the U.S. Military is capable of — and you were warned. You will pay the CONSEQUENCE at the time and place of our choosing.'
Last Saturday's round of talks, which included experts drilling down into the details of a possible deal, also took place as an explosion rocked an Iranian port, killing at least 70 people and injuring more than 1,000 others.

Markets extend losses for 3rd session amid broad-based selloff; Sensex and Nifty tumbled

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled nearly 1% on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) weighed down by a widespread selloff amid foreign fund outflows and growing geopolitical uncertainties. Domestic markets stayed on the back foot for the third straight session as investors offloaded energy, finance and IT stocks, traders said. In a volatile trading session, the 30-share BSE index tanked 636.24 points or 0.78% to settle at 80,737.51. During the day, it dropped 798.66 points or 0.98% to 80,575.09. The NSE Nifty plunged 174.10 points or 0.70% to 24,542.50. As many as 2,266 stocks declined, while 1,731 advanced and 147 remained unchanged on the BSE. "The domestic market remained in negative terrain amid mixed global cues, geopolitical issues and a volatile currency market led by a weak USD. Profit-booking is evident across sectors, except for real estate stocks, supported by expectations of an interest rate cut by the RBI. "Mid and small-cap stocks are experiencing relatively less consolidation than large caps due to better earnings growth & moderation in premium valuation. While short-term consolidation is likely to persist, strong domestic-oriented players are estimated to provide outperformance against external volatility," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said. From the Sensex firms, Adani Ports declined 2.42%. Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Power Grid, Eternal, IndusInd Bank, Maruti, Tata Consultancy Services and UltraTech Cement were among the biggest laggards. Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the only gainer in the pack. Adani Group's 11 listed companies ended lower. Adani Group on Monday said it does not handle any cargo coming from Iran or any Iranian-owned ship at any of its ports, as it denied any deliberate engagement in sanctions evasion. In a stock exchange filing, the group said reports of links between any of its entities and Iranian LPG are "baseless and mischievous". The BSE midcap gauge declined 0.52%, while the smallcap index dipped 0.07%. Among sectoral indices, power dropped 1.50%, utilities (1.42%), bankex (0.89%), energy (0.88%), capital goods (0.87%), financial services (0.80%) and teck (0.68%). On the other hand, commodities and realty were the gainers. "The Nifty has extended its consolidation phase for yet another day, showing no urgency in establishing a clear directional trend. It appears that investors are awaiting a decisive commentary following the RBI's interest rate decision," Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, said. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹2,589.47 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. "The ongoing foreign fund outflows, coupled with weak global cues such as geopolitical tensions and uncertainty over trade deals, are adding pressure to the markets," Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said. In Asian markets, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng settled in positive territory, while Japan's Nikkei 225 index ended lower. South Korean markets were closed. European markets were trading lower. US markets ended higher on Monday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.28% to $64.81 a barrel. After tumbling 796.75 points or 0.97% to 80,654.26 in intra-day trade on Monday, the 30-share BSE Sensex witnessed volatile trends and later ended 77.26 points or 0.09% lower at 81,373.75. The Nifty dipped 34.10 points or 0.14% to settle at 24,716.60.

Klarna trials debit card in US, plans Europe launch later this year

Swedish fintech Klarna on Tuesday said on Monday it is doing a pilot launch of a new debit card in the United States as the buy now, pay later pioneer seeks to compete more directly with traditional banks. With a partnership with Visa, Klarna will allow consumers to pay immediately or choose interest-free options to pay over time for both online and in-store purchases. Klarna in April paused its plans for a US initial public offering for the second time in the last few years as president Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs rattled global markets. The company, which has over 100 million global active users, is currently trialling the debit card in the U.S. before a broader rollout in the US and Europe later this year. Banks are the primary institutions in the U.S. to issue debit cards where a customer can use their own funds to purchase goods instead of going into debt as offered by credit cards. Rupee ends lower at 85.59/$ as firm crude oil prices weigh

The Indian rupee weakened after a day of gains, as higher crude oil prices weighed on the currency despite a weak dollar index. The domestic currency ended 7 paise lower at 85.59 against the greenback, after closing at 85.52 on Monday, according to Bloomberg. The weakness in the currency came after the unit snapped a four-day losing streak. Reports indicate that the rupee's implied volatility has been declining. The one-month implied volatility has fallen to 5 per cent, down from a peak of over 7 per cent recorded in the second week of May. Meanwhile, the dollar index fell to its lowest since 2023 after the Manufacturing Imports Index and Manufacturing PMI slipped in the US. The Trump administration's renewed protectionist stance, unpredictable tariff threats, and tax policies have rattled institutional investors, causing a broad-based selloff in US equities and debt, according to Amit Pabari, managing director at CR Forex Advisors. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.21 per cent at 98.91. The index is likely to remain under pressure, facing strong resistance near the 99.80–100.00 zone and gradually declining toward 98, followed by 97.50, according to Pabari. Amid rising trade tensions triggered by Donald Trump's tariff hikes, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday projected that US economic growth will slow to 1.6 per cent in 2025 — down from 2.8 per cent the previous year. During the week, all eyes will be on the RBI's six-member monetary policy committee (MPC), which is expected to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.75 per cent. The committee, which will meet for three days from June 4, is scheduled to announce its policy review on Friday. India's HSBC Manufacturing PMI fell to a 3-month low of 57.6 due to rising prices and weak exports, Pabari noted. However, fourth quarter GDP grew 7.4 per cent, driven by strong consumption and a surge in construction and manufacturing, he said. "Technically, the rupee is likely to trade in a range with 85.90-86.00 acting as a strong resistance, while 85.00-85.20 will act as a support." In commodities, crude oil prices extended Monday's 3 per cent gains after the Opec+ agreed to increase production in July. Brent crude price was up 0.17 per cent to $64.74 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were 0.27 per cent higher at 62.69, as of 3:43 PM IST.
