Hema Malini: ‘There can be remakes, but there is no guarantee it will stay relevant for 50 years'
Sholay etched its name in Indian cinema's hall of fame with its iconic friendship between Jai and Veeru, Gabbar's menacing villain act, and the heartwarming romance between Basanti (Hema Malini) and Veeru (Dharmendra). The film's dialogues and songs continue to captivate audiences. Amitabh Bachchan took on the role of Jai, and Amjad Khan as Gabbar. It also featured Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan. The film still holds the record for most tickets sold by an Indian film.
On Sholay turning 50
During an interview with Hindustan Times, Hema Malini candidly admitted that when Sholay was made, none of the cast members, including herself, foresaw the film's massive impact and lasting influence that would cement its place in history.
'I have such fond memories of working with everyone. People ask me about my best memories, but we never thought that we were supposed to remember anything. We all worked in Sholay like we do in other films. We have worked in several films, and Sholay was also one such film,' Hema tells us.
The 76-year-old continues, 'Today, Sholay has become an iconic film now… So when we look back, there are many pleasant and beautiful memories of working with all those stalwarts.'
Looking back, Hema shares, 'At that time, we all were just starting (our career)... Like Amitji was also upcoming in those days. Except for Dharmji and Sanjeev ji, all the other actors were upcoming. Today, we all have achieved so much… It shows how things change and where we all have reached today from the Sholay days.'
We ask her if she has a personal favourite scene, to which Hema confesses that she can never pick any one scene.
On Sholay being remade
Here, Hema Malini expressed openness to a potential remake of Sholay, but firmly believes that no new version can match the timeless impact and legacy of the original film.
'Remake ho sakte hai, kyun nahi ho sakti (A remake can happen, why not). But woh aage 50 saal chalega ya nahi chalega woh guarantee nahi hai (But whether it (the remake) will stand the test of time for the next 50 years or not, there's no guarantee). Sholay has a legacy and it is iconic. People remember each and every dialogue of the film,' says the mother of two, adding, 'New actors also wish to perform those roles, so they should.'
Hema mentions, 'Just like you can't repeat Godfather, you can't repeat the success of Sholay. You can repeat the story but not the success. Whether people are going to accept and how they are going to accept is something to be seen.'
She gives examples of Ramayana and Mahabharat to explain her point of view, saying, 'They all are great epics. So many interpretations have been made on the same, some for the big screen and some for the small screen. BR Chopra's Ramayan worked so well, but that is not true for every version. Some came and vanished without even being noticed. So, it depends on the mood of the people at that time and how well you have made. Sholay jaisi film sirf ek baar banti hai.'

Disbanded after Hema report firestorm, Malayalam film artists' body sees a historic first – a woman as president
For the first time in its three-decade history, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) Friday elected women as its president and general secretary. The election for the new office-bearers was held a year after its 17-member executive committee, headed by Mohanlal, quit in the wake of the Hema committee report and subsequent revelations of sexual misconduct. While Shweta Menon was elected president, Cuckoo Parameswaran is the new general secretary. The former defeated veteran actor Devan, while the latter's rival was Raveendran. The general body also elected Lakshmi Priya as vice-president and Ansiba as joint secretary. Unni Shivapal is the treasurer of the committee, which is elected for the next three years. Shweta told the media that the new committee will bring in changes. 'We will bring in all members who have quit the body. They are most welcome. There are no men or women in the body; all are actors,' she said. The newly elected general secretary said, 'All the 508 members of the AMMA will be taken into confidence before any decision. This body will bring in changes.' Days before the elections, Shweta had faced a case based on a complaint that 'she acted in movies and advertisements involving nudity and made financial gains by misusing her notoriety as a vulgar actor'. The High Court stayed the proceedings in the case, which was allegedly linked to her contest in the AMMA elections. The Hema committee report, which came out a year earlier, had triggered an uproar in the film industry, and the then general secretary of AMMA, Siddique, was forced to quit in the wake of the alleged sexual misconduct. Its joint general secretary, Baburaj, also faced similar allegations. Several prominent actors had openly come out against AMMA, leading to the disbanding of the executive and office-bearers. Shweta is a prominent actress, model, and television anchor, active in the entertainment industry for the last three decades. She debuted in the Malayalam film industry in 1991 in Mamootty-starrer Anaswaram. After being crowned Miss Bangalore, she was adjudged third in the Miss India contest in 1994, which Sushmita Sen won. Twice, she won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress – first for her performance in Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha and then for her role in Salt N' Pepper. Newly elected general secretary Cuckoo started her career as a child artiste. She is also a classical dancer, fashion designer and theatre professional. In 1988, she bagged the second-best actress award in Kerala for her role in Ore Thooval Pakshikal.

‘Priyanka Chopra still hugs me with so much love, hasn't forgotten her middle-class values,' says Anil Sharma: ‘She has become a global star, par asmaan ki hawa nahi lagi'
After winning the Miss World crown in 2000, Priyanka Chopra made her Bollywood debut with Anil Sharma's 2003 film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. Considered the most expensive Indian film of its time, Hero earned Priyanka the Stardust Award for Best Supporting Actress and marked the beginning of her meteoric rise in cinema, eventually making her a global icon. In a recent interview, when Hero director Anil Sharma was credited with Priyanka Chopra's success, he was quick to interject, saying, 'It is all her hard work.' Speaking to Showsha, the filmmaker recalled the time when he cast Priyanka for his film. 'I saw Priyanka Chopra for the first time on television when she was crowned Miss World in 2000. I found her to be very pretty. I invited her to meet me. She came along with her father Dr Ashok Chopra. He was a nice man. As soon as I met them, it felt like they were my own people. Back then, they lived in Bareilly.' He added, 'When I met Priyanka, she became the first girl whom I cast without taking a screen test. After talking to her, I quickly handed over the cheque to her. Just by speaking to her, I knew she was a performer. After that, she worked very hard and many incidents happened in her life, which ultimately made her a global icon.' She still shows respect when she sees me. Whenever we meet, she hugs me with so much love. She doesn't hesitate to leave her group, when she spots me somewhere. She has that respect for me because it is the reflection of her upbringing. Priyanka still maintains the middle class sanskaar of a UP family. It is a huge thing. She has become such big personality today, par use asmaan ki hawa nahi lagi.' However, in the same interview, the filmmaker admitted that he hasn't met Priyanka in a very long time, as she rarely visits India for work these days.
