Burnley edge closer to Premier League promotion with win over Watford
WATFORD, England, April 18 (Reuters) - Josh Brownhill's second-half strike earned Burnley a 2-1 win at nine-man Watford on Friday, extending the visitors' unbeaten run in the Championship to 30 matches and moving them closer to a Premier League return.
Burnley climbed to the top of the standings with 91 points from 43 games, three ahead of second-placed Leeds United, who travel to Oxford United later on Friday.
Watford, who dropped to 12th place, went ahead in the eighth minute when Rocco Vata's swerving cross was nodded home by Mamadou Doumbia, but the hosts spurned a number of chances to extend their lead.
They were made to rue their wastefulness on the stroke of halftime after a rapid Burnley counter-attack was finished off by Zian Flemming with a diving header.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Burnley dialled up the pressure after the interval and found the winner in the 58th minute through Brownhill's close-range header.
Watford, seeing their chances of closing in on the playoff positions evaporate, imploded immediately after conceding.
Moussa Sissoko was shown a red card for shoving Flemming from the kickoff and any chance the hosts had of mounting a comeback disappeared when midfielder Edo Kayembe was dismissed in the 69th minute after picking up his second yellow card.
Burnley continued their remarkable unbeaten record in the Championship, with Scott Parker's side last losing a league game in November.
They are only the second team in Championship history to go 30 consecutive games without losing in the regular season after Reading accomplished the feat in 2006.

Ex-Man Utd star to reunite with Greenwood after missing out on dream return
Former Manchester United star Angel Gomes will link up with Mason Greenwood after sealing a shock transfer to Marseille. The England midfielder was out of contract this summer. He had been linked with a return to Old Trafford, while Premier League rivals Tottenham and West Ham were also credited with an interest. Despite that, Gomes has chosen to move elsewhere. According to RMC Sport, he is set to move to the French giants, who have offered the midfielder a three-year deal at the Stade Velodrome. Gomes has agreed to the move having been convinced by Roberto De Zerbi's style of play, while the chance to play in the Champions League proved difficult to turn down. Gomes will link up with former United teammate and fellow academy graduate Greenwood with his new employers. The striker moved to France permanently last summer and went on to score 22 goals across his debut campaign. Greenwood has been linked with a move of his own amid reported interest from Barcelona but has expressed his desire to remain with Marseille. Speaking earlier this year, he said: "I hope to be here next year for the Champions League. 'All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it's been a very positive season, we've reached our objective." Gomes, 24, has been with Lille since leaving Old Trafford in 2021. The four-time England international has gone on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring on ten occasions. Speaking previously, he admitted that he would potentially be open to a return to United. As quoted by L'Equipe, he said: 'It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. "I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn't be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that's what convinced me to move - the faith Lille had in me. "Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it's home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future." Man Utd told to join race to sign £42m Arsenal transfer target
Manchester United have been urged to consider a move for one of Arsenal's transfer targets to provide Ruben Amorim with more attacking firepower. After a deflating end to the campaign, which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and miss out on European silverware, United are plotting their latest summer rebuild. The Red Devils have identified the forward line as a key area for improvement and have already signed Matheus Cunha to begin to address those concerns. A deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo could also follow, although both clubs are still yet to agree on a fee after United's initial offer was rejected. Should a deal for the Cameroonian international fail to materialise, however, United may be forced to consider alternative options. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. And former Red Devils defender Gary Pallister believes that Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma could be the man to make an instant impact at Old Trafford. 'I don't think you can ever have enough attacking options and we have seen what Kaoru Mitoma can do in the Premier League,' Pallister told 'Marcus Rashford might be leaving the club and Amad Diallo was the only forward hitting his top level before he got injured, the club needs back up in those areas. 'If Mitoma is available then I'd like to see him at Old Trafford, he can make an impact.' The Japanese international notched up 10 goals and four assists in the league last season and has attracted interest from several top European clubs so far this window. Bayern Munich have taken an interest in the 28-year-old, while Sky Germany also reported that Arsenal have shortlisted the Brighton star as a potential target this summer. More Trending A fee of around €50 million (£42m) is said to potentially be enough to secure Mitoma's services. Mitoma is one of several names on Arsenal's shortlist as Mikel Arteta's side look for wide attacking reinforcements in the summer window. Real Madrid's Rodrygo is said to be the club's dream target but Xabi Alonso has played down speculation linking the Brazilian with an exit. Nico Williams has also been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates in recent windows, but the Spaniard is now reportedly in talks to extend his stay at Athletic Club with a new and improved contract. Brutal Ange Postecoglou sacking leaves burning question for Daniel Levy: What is the point in Tottenham Hotspur?

You staked your reputation, you risked your job, on winning silverware for Tottenham. You told us you always won things in your second season in any job and we laughed at you and said, "Yes, mate, but this is Tottenham". And then you went and won something in your second season. You gambled and it paid off and yet they sacked you anyway. And what could be more cynical than that? READ MORE ON TOTTENHAM 'Plenty of noise' Ange takes final swipe at critics moments after getting axed by Spurs You realised that winning the Europa League would mean far more to Spurs fans than finishing in the top half of the Premier League and you told us so. Just like you told us time and again that VAR is ruining the enjoyment of football. Just like you told us that those stats bores who try to suck the joy out of the game spend most of their time spouting nonsense. JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed. It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.' You were right about all of those things and plenty more. You were chippy and sarcy and narky but you spoke more good, honest commonsense than any other manager in the Premier League has done for years. Ange Postecoglou fumes after being labelled a 'clown' and refuses to answer question during press conference You spoke like a true lover of the game, a true fan, with all the heart-on-sleeve emotion and all the 'us against the world' spikiness that entails. You tried to play football the right way, the Spurs way, the glory, glory way, the 'To Dare Is To Do' way. And if it often looked naive and inflexible, then at least you never bored the pants off us. 'Are you not entertained?' you asked us and, invariably, we were. Even if Spurs invariably lost. Your policy of prioritising the Europa League over the Premier League cut to the heart of the essential question any Tottenham Hotspur manager should ask, namely: 'What is the point of Tottenham Hotspur?' For an entire generation, Spurs were the sixth richest club in England and since Newcastle's Geordie Arabia revolution, they are the seventh richest. As a result, Spurs are unlikely to win the Premier League any time soon. The peak of their realistic ambitions are to win knock-out competitions and to consistently entertain, to bring joy to those who pay to watch them. And if that wasn't the case very often last season - when Spurs lost 22 league matches and finished 17th - then at least it was always the intention. The scenes witnessed in Bilbao after the Europa League Final victory over Manchester United - and at the trophy parade a couple of days later - will be remembered by Spurs supporters for as long as they live. You were the last fair-dinkum footballing romantic inside the cynical world of Premier League football." Dave Kidd on Ange Postecgolou And that was down to you, Ange Postecoglou - a bloke who grew up on the other side of the world, where football is a minority sport. An outsider, consistently patronised and belittled throughout your career. A man who never tried to pretend that those attitudes didn't hurt you. And you defended your club. You hated the way we often laughed at it. You railed against long-held perceptions and 'agendas' and you stuck up for Spurs. You were loyal and you were proud and yet, ultimately that loyalty was never repaid. Because ultimately, no major football club, no big company, ever truly gives a stuff about its employees. We will miss you, mate. And if you ever wind up on our shores again, we will welcome you with open arms.
