People Are Sharing The Ways They've 'Won The Genetic Lottery,' And To Say I'm Jealous Is An Understatement

Yahoo8 hours ago

Last month, Reddit user bouquetoftarnations posted to the popular Casual Conversation subreddit with what I thought was a pretty fun question: "In what small way have you won the genetic lottery?"
"In my family," they said, "we don't get eye bags or dark undereye circles. Ever. No matter how little sleep we get. And my parents and I are all really terrible at maintaining consistent sleep schedules and getting a healthy amount of sleep. So, I do feel we've sort of won the genetic lottery there. I was wondering if anyone had some similar small wins."
People chimed in with some great answers, and I think it's always fun to appreciate the positives about yourself! So, here are some of the best:

2."I have the genetic variant known as CCR5-Δ32 deletion that is resistant to HIV infection. Discovered accidentally when testing for a rare genetic mutation that runs in my family."

3."I can draw near photographic portraits of people with a pencil. I didn't know until I was a teenager, and it was a school assignment, and I just did a great job, and was shocked, I had no idea I could do that. Then I went to show my grandma how proud I was, looked at the art on her walls, and realized I inherited it."

4."My brothers and I can all wiggle our noses (like on Bewitched). We got that from our dad. We use it to say 'love you' whenever the fancy strikes."
"But my real 'genetic lottery win' is my brothers who show me affection in this small way."

5."Apparently, I have enough room in my mouth that I can keep my wisdom teeth."

"I lost my leg and arm hair in my 30s. I don't remember exactly when, but on a sunny day I just noticed it and thought, 'Awesome!' Turns out I had thyroid cancer. Once I got it treated the hair came back.
I still think about it though. I used to just touch my arms. They were so smooth!"

7."Huge bladder (or just dull stretch receptors). Road trip champion!"

8."I have no reaction to mosquito bites or poison ivy. No clue why."
"Also, I'm genetically resistant to Norovirus, which would explain why literally everyone in my college dorm got it but me. I'm pretty sure my mom is too, as she was a kindergarten teacher and was often exposed to it (a wild amount of people send their kids who are vomiting to school), and she never got it."

14."I have very dense bones..."
"I found that out when I had to have a hip replacement. When my doctor told me I have above-average density of my bones, I said, 'OH! So I really AM big-boned!'
He turned and looked at me and flatly said, 'Yes, but you're fat, too.'
He couldn't let me have that for just five seconds...LMAO!"

15."I have an epic beard and am freakishly strong. I guess the two go together when I'm cutting wood or doing other manly things."

—u/Jovian_Moons_97
"That means you are a carrier of the ginger gene! You could make a ginger baby with someone who also has the incomplete gene; they don't have to be ginger to have it! It shows in men through ginger facial hair often!"
—u/gibgerbabymummy
17."I stay fit super easily; I live a healthy life and exercise often but particularly if I want to strength train, I gain significant size and definition within a few weeks. My army buddies said I just had to walk past the gym and I'd bulk. 😆"
—u/beltfedfreedom
18."Everyone in my immediate family is very intelligent. We're all outshone by my little brother, though. He's one of those weird super-genius kids. Taught himself to read and write at about 2 years old, and now he does programming and 3D modeling at 11."

Jeremy Allen White faced 'pressure' when Bruce Springsteen movie trailer was released

Jeremy Allen White could barely stand it. White, star of the hit FX series 'The Bear,' braced himself for the day the 'Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere' trailer came out. 'Getting that out, it was so much pressure,' said White to Jimmy Fallon on the June 26 'Tonight Show.' 'You're playing a real person — never mind Bruce Springsteen — and I was really touched (when) the trailer came out. I had more texts than when I blacked out and won that Golden Globe (for 'The Bear').' White won Best Actor in a comedy series in 2023, and part of his acceptance speech was bleeped out due to profanity. White won a Golden Globe for the third time for 'The Bear' in January but did not attend the awards ceremony as he was filming 'Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere' in New Jersey. The trailer for 'Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,' which features White as Springsteen singing 'Born to Run' on a concert stage, was released on June 18. 'I didn't realize trailers were that big of a thing but, yeah, I'm breathing easy,' White said. 'People are really nice about the trailer and I'm excited.' 'Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,' from Disney's 20th Century Studios, is written and directed by Scott Cooper ('Crazy Heart,' 'Hostiles'). The film also features Jeremy Strong ('Succession') as Springsteen manager Jon Landau; Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan; Stephen Graham as Springsteen's father, Douglas; and Odessa Young as love interest, Faye. The film, based on the book 'Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska' by musician Warren Zanes, is scheduled to be released in theaters Friday, Oct. 24. Location filming began in New Jersey Oct. 28, 2024, at the Montclair Library's Bellevue Avenue branch. Shoots took place in Asbury Park (including the Stone Pony and Frank's Deli), Freehold, Rahway, Bayonne, Denville, Rockaway and the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford for the 'Born to Run' concert scene. White does his own singing in the film. The Boss was often on the set of filming in New Jersey. The fourth seasons of 'The Bear,' which airs of Hulu, was released June 25. Exclusive: Cliff Vmir Acquires New FEMMÈ Beauty Storefront And Talks Leadership, Ownership, And Impact

Cliff Vmir When one thinks of the viral internet sensation Cliff Vmir, it should come as no surprise that words like 'trailblazer' or 'trendsetter' closely follow. Throughout his career, we've witnessed the tastemaker expand his brand into lucrative streams of income as a key figure in the beauty industry, serving as a leading celebrity hairstylist for notable clients such as Cardi B, Jazmine Sullivan, and Sexyy Red. Vmir's influence has only grown in recent years, thanks to his haircare brand FEMMÉ, a line of products tailored to the needs of his extensive clientele, focusing on hair growth, nourishment, and more. As it's clear that he's already paved (or slayed) his own path in the haircare industry, Vmir recently added another accomplishment to his growing empire — a 3,000 sq. foot warehouse, salon, and storefront to house his FEMMÉ brand. While he's excited about this level up, Vmir feels that the elation will truly set in as he continues to meet his entrepreneurial goals.'I'm very hard on myself and have been since I was around sixteen years old. It's a good thing and it's a bad thing. I am excited and happy because I'm twenty-eight, and before anything, I'm Black and this is Black excellence,' Vmir said. 'I really started taking my hair care brand super seriously, about 10 months ago. This is the fourth and biggest warehouse that we moved up to. In my opinion, I won't feel like we've made it until I reach Walmart status because I feel like I'm only 10% of where I want to be.'One aspect that appears to be a common denominator in Vmir's professional trajectory is camaraderie. Whether it's by way of his collaborations with some of the leading ladies of popular culture or shining a light on other creators who look to create their own success stories, this energy is embedded in this latest endeavor, as well.'It's going to be a store in the very front, a salon in the middle, and then in the back, there's a double door that goes into the warehouse. I don't mind helping stylists, and I want a lot of phenomenal stylists there. I wanted a primarily male-based salon because I feel that males bring a different energy,' Vmir said. 'But I just want people who are not afraid to help one another. The salon is undergoing an interior makeover, featuring nice epoxy floors, with a significant amount of money being invested in it. FEMMÈ is my first baby, but this is my first baby that I have to really take care of. I have to make sure everything is done correctly, and I have the right people representing it. I just want to make sure that no matter what, people are going above and beyond, regardless of who you are.' Cliff Vmir While the mogul continues to extend his reign in the fields of haircare and entrepreneurship, he admits that each discipline requires varying levels of intention. When it comes to ownership, particularly, Vmir admits that sustaining the livelihood of his colleagues is of utmost importance to him and fuels his motivation.'Ownership for me is a whole other ballgame. As a hairstylist, you may wake up feeling unwell and need to cancel appointments. When you own a business, however, people are depending on you. There are people who work for me who can't pay their bills or provide for their families without that job. Anytime you own something, you're always the root of everything, so I can't really take days off. I could take a sick day, but I still need to ensure things are moving forward. Every day when I open my eyes, it's all about FEMMÈ and how I can advance my career. I feel that if I were to stop working today or tomorrow, many people who depend on me would struggle to provide for their families. I'm not doing it because of that, but I love to be able to put people in a position. When you own something and it's yours and no one can take it away from you, it's a really powerful feeling, especially when you're building it from the ground up.' Cliff Vmir Just two years shy of thirty, the innovator's leadership style encompasses similar tenets to those of peers twice his age. According to Vmir, that instinctive quality of leadership is something he's embodied since birth.'I feel like I've always been a natural leader. I'm young and I've always known what I wanted. I worked for myself since I was fifteen, so I'm very seasoned. I'm twenty-eight now, and I tell everyone who has a business never to take no for an answer because I never do. If I'm expecting a package and they call me and say, 'Oh, we're going to have a delay,' I'm going to do whatever I can to get my stuff when I need it, so I never accept no. I have always been a natural-born leader, and I'm never going to follow after anyone because how I feel matters the most.'As the Delaware native continues to excel in all of his lanes, he feels that his career is a full-circle moment, given that his dreams have become reality. 'I just wanted to be a regular hairstylist. My mom used to get her hair done by a woman who would do hair at her home. It wasn't ever about money, but about the art behind hair. I used to watch her do my mom's hair, and they would gossip and have a good time; that is what I originally wanted. However, once I was fourteen or fifteen, I had another vision. I remember going to cosmetology class because I went to a vocational school, and a teacher asked us all, 'Well, where do you see yourself in five years?' And I said, 'Well, I want to be a celebrity hairstylist.' Again, at the time in Delaware, that was considered impossible. Everyone just started laughing, and here we are over a decade later. The tongue is powerful, and working hard really does go a long way. I'm just so proud of myself, and I have never said that, ever.'
