Economic Times3 days ago
Synopsis
Swadeshi Jagran Manch protested against US tariffs on Indian products in Delhi. Volunteers organised the demonstration under the 'Swadeshi, Suraksha and Swavlamban' campaign. Ashwani Mahajan urged citizens to support Swadeshi products. He also called for curbing Chinese imports and protecting national interests through trade agreements. Mahajan criticised digital monopolies like Amazon and Walmart, accusing them of undermining Indian retail trade.
PTI RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on Sunday held a symbolic protest in News Delhi against the imposition of "unethical and unreasonable" tariffs by the US on Indian goods. The protest was organised by the SJM volunteers under the 'Swadeshi, Suraksha and Swavlamban' campaign against "illegal, unethical and unreasonable tariffs" on products from Bharat, Manch's national co-convenor Ashwani Mahajan said in a statement. "Swadeshi Jagran Manch welcomes the clarion call for Swadeshi by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, where the Prime Minister has said that buying and selling of Swadeshi products is also a true service to the nation," he said. Mahajan said that SJM calls upon every citizen of the country to be a part of the campaign, whose sole aim is to make our India great again. "We also call on the government to curb imports of Chinese products and protect national interests by entering into free trade agreements with other countries," he said.
Mahajan said that amid "global uncertainties," where value chains, payment systems and currencies are all being weaponised, the US and other countries are becoming more and more protectionist and blocking global exports using tariff walls and unjust non-tariff barriers. "The new digital monopolies - Amazon, Walmart (Flipkart) and other Western e-commerce giants - are the 21st-century East India Company. These platforms are undermining India's traditional retail trade, marginalising millions of small traders," said. He said these companies flout rules and lobby for policy changes to favour their "monopolistic ambitions." "The SJM also calls upon the government to regulate e-commerce giants and prevent them from indulging in predatory pricing," he said. Mahajan said political will, policy interventions and people's participation have already shown "positive results" in achieving self-reliance in "some sectors."

Indian-origin Labour politician Thangam Debbonaire calls for removal of a Robert Clive statue in London

Prominent Labour peer Thangam Debbonaire has called for the removal of a bronze statue of Robert Clive currently located near the Foreign Office in London. The East India Company official was a controversial figure in British colonial history in India. 'That statue continues to promote him in a victorious mode and as a symbol of something that had universal good… I don't think it's helpful for any visitor to the Foreign Office, particularly those of us from Indian origins in the diaspora, but also visiting Indian people, Indian dignitaries, ambassadors, trade ministers, to walk into the Foreign Office past that statue. I don't think that presents Britain in a particularly good light in the 21st century,' Debbonaire reportedly stated. The Indian-origin former shadow culture secretary was speaking at the Edinburgh International book festival. She added, 'It's not helpful for our current relationship with India and it is deeply unhelpful to see India as a country that Britain civilised. The bronze statue designed by Scottish sculptor John Tweed was completed in 1912 and has Clive in a formal dress with one hand resting on a sword. Known to be a ruthless military commander, Clive rose through the ranks of the East India Company and is often credited with expanding its presence in the subcontinent. He has been accused of plundering India and acquiring personal treasures. In his book The Anarchy: The relentless rise of the East India Company, historian William Dalrymple refers to Clive as an 'unstable sociopath'. He describes him as 'violent, utterly ruthless and intermittently mentally unstable corporate predator.' In 2020 — when statues of historical figures with links to the British Empire came under threat during the Black Lives Matter protests — a public campaign had also demanded the removal of another Clive statue at Shrewsbury.
