Swadeshi Jagran Manch denounces ‘unethical' US tariffs in symbolic protest

'Swadeshi Jagran Manch welcomes the clarion call for Swadeshi by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, where the Prime Minister has said that buying and selling of Swadeshi products is also a true service to the nation,' he said. The protest was organised by the SJM volunteers under the 'Swadeshi, Suraksha and Swavlamban' campaign against 'illegal, unethical and unreasonable tariffs' on products from Bharat, Manch's national co-convenor Ashwani Mahajan said in a statement. New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on Sunday held a symbolic protest here against the imposition of 'unethical and unreasonable' tariffs by the US on Indian goods. Mahajan said that SJM calls upon every citizen of the country to be a part of the campaign, whose sole aim is to make our India great again. 'We also call on the government to curb imports of Chinese products and protect national interests by entering into free trade agreements with other countries,' he said. Mahajan said that amid 'global uncertainties,' where value chains, payment systems and currencies are all being weaponised, the US and other countries are becoming more and more protectionist and blocking global exports using tariff walls and unjust non-tariff barriers. 'The new digital monopolies — Amazon, Walmart (Flipkart) and other Western e-commerce giants – are the 21st-century East India Company. These platforms are undermining India's traditional retail trade, marginalising millions of small traders,' said. He said these companies flout rules and lobby for policy changes to favour their 'monopolistic ambitions.' 'The SJM also calls upon the government to regulate e-commerce giants and prevent them from indulging in predatory pricing,' he said. Mahajan said political will, policy interventions and people's participation have already shown 'positive results' in achieving self-reliance in 'some sectors.' Niti withdraws paper on GM crops import from US, signals govt stand

NEW DELHI: The Niti Aayog's recent withdrawal of its working paper, which had suggested opening up import of genetically modified (GM) soybean and corn from the US, has given a peek into India's red-line on transgenic food items. Though the US, during its trade negotiations with India, considered the stand as one of the non-tariff trade barriers, India preferred not to open up its market for GM food items over biosafety concerns, notwithstanding its primary think tank arguing in favour of import of transgenic soybean and corn without harming domestic production. The working paper on 'promoting India-US agricultural trade under the new US trade regime', released in May, had suggested that GM corn may be imported for ethanol blending and its by-products, like Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles. "US corn is cheaper and can be used to meet India's biofuel targets without disrupting local food and feed markets," said the authors - Raka Saxena and Ramesh Chand - of the working paper. Chand is member, Niti Aayog, while Saxena is senior adviser at the think tank. Although the paper used a disclaimer terming the content as personal views of authors, its recent withdrawal from the think tank's website reflects govt's thinking on the issue of GM products. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo India currently allows commercial cultivation of only transgenic cotton, a non-food farm item. Govt's stand is in sync with RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagaran Manch's opposition to the cultivation and import of GM farm products. In its opposition to transgenic food items, the SJM has even joined hands with several left-leaning farm groups in the past. The working paper had pitched for a "dual-track" approach while negotiating the trade deal on agricultural items with the US and appeared keen on opening the country's market to specific non-sensitive imports of farm products that do not face direct competition from local producers, such as almonds, pistachios, and walnuts. India has maintained a surplus in agriculture trade with the US and it has increased over time. India's agricultural exports to the US grew nearly fivefold between 2004 and 2024, from $1.18 billion to $5.75 billion, while imports however, grew faster - from $291 million in 2004 to $2,218 million in 2024.

No invite for Pak, Bangladesh, Turkey as RSS gears up for centenary celebrations

As the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) prepares to kick off its centenary celebrations later this month, some notable absences from the guest list are drawing attention. Pakistan and Bangladesh haven't been invited, and Turkey also appears unlikely to receive an the event is expected to be grand, inclusive and wide-ranging with participation from intellectuals, politicians, journalists, influencers, entrepreneurs and community leaders, however, the diplomatic invitations are being handled with caution. Sources told India Today that the 'atmosphere isn't right' for inviting to sources aware of the matter, the decision is unsurprising given the current geopolitical climate. Relations with Islamabad and Dhaka remain strained, while Ankara's recent defence collaborations with Pakistan have further complicated matters. Though the RSS is engaging with various embassies, the consensus is that the environment isn't conducive to extending an invitation to Pakistan or, by extension, to Turkey and DAYS, BIG VOICESThe flagship event will take place from August 26 to 28 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. The final day is expected to be particularly impactful, with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat taking questions from the audience.'This is more than a celebration,' said RSS pracharak and national executive member Sunil Ambekar. 'It's a platform to reflect on the past, explain the ideology, and chart a roadmap for the future. We've had in-depth discussions on where RSS stands, where it's going, and what kind of energy we want to harness.'WHY TURKEY, BANGLADESH MAY BE LEFT OUTThe diplomatic exclusions extend beyond Pakistan. Turkey, due to its growing defense ties with Islamabad, is also likely to be sidelined. Earlier this year, the RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagaran Manch even called for economic sanctions against exclusion is also under consideration, largely due to rising concerns over attacks on minorities under Dhaka's interim regime. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has raised repeated alarms, and until the situation stabiliSes, an invitation seems the Sangh plans to reach across the political and social spectrum—extending invites to members of opposition parties and representatives from Muslim and Christian the single-location event held in 2018, the centenary celebrations are being scaled nationwide. After Delhi, major events are planned in Bengaluru (November), Kolkata and Mumbai (February). The aim: to broaden engagement, spark dialogue and reflect on the RSS's the heart of it all is a central theme: '100 Years of RSS: New Horizons.'The celebration will explore the Sangh's legacy, its evolving role in Indian society, and its vision for the future. But this time, the focus isn't just on swayamsevaks. The invite list spans a diverse array of voices: politicians, academics, entrepreneurs, media personalities, industrialists and social influencers.'There's a need to question inherited colonial structures, especially in fields like medicine and economics,' Ambekar said. 'It's time to explore an Indian way forward.'- Ends
