Ekurhuleni Metro Police face disciplinary action after illegal protest
Over 300 Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers face disciplinary actions following their involvement in an illegal protest that disrupted major traffic routes and access to O.R. Tambo International Airport.
The city of Ekurhuleni is set to kick start disciplinary actions against more than Three hundred Metro Police officers.
The city initiated the disciplinary process after its police officers were engaged in what the city called illegal protest leading to them blockading several major routes in Ekurhuleni.
According to reports officers were frustrated over salary adjustments, overtime compensation, and also calling for improved working conditions.
The municipality's spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the affected EMPD officers face pre-dismissal processes due to severe misconduct, including the illegal blockade of the R21, N12, N17, and N3 highways.
'This unlawful action significantly disruptedtraffic flow, severely inconvenienced thousands of commuters, and hindered access to the O.R. Tambo International Airport, a designated National Key Point, impacting flight schedules and broader regional connectivity,' Dlamini explained.
He further said that EMPD officers, were classified under essential services, mandated to uphold public safety and order.
Dlamini continued to say the EMPD officers participation in prohibited strike action constituted gross misconduct, which undermined public trust and violated labour laws as stipulated in the Labour Relations Act.
'All implicated officers have been issued pre-dismissal notices and are suspended from duty pending the outcome of their disciplinary hearings. They are required to submit any City-issued equipment, including vehicles, firearms, and official access cards, until the conclusion of the disciplinary process'.
The City is currently collaborating with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure continued policing services, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the City and the Minister of Police.
Dlamini said this was the municipality's way of reiterating its commitment to maintaining discipline, accountability, and ensuring that essential services personnel uphold their responsibility to public safety and order.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA)has raised the alarm bells on service providers using fake licences to gain public trust. SAHPRA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Boitumela Semete-Makokotlela, said cannabis dispensaries are mushrooming in shopping malls, blatantly displaying copies of SAHPRA 'licences' which were issued authorising cannabis cultivation and exporting of the cannabis flower. "Such licences do not authorise these so-called cannabis dispensaries." Semete-Makokotlela stressed that the use of fake licenses is not only illegal but also poses a serious risk to public health and safety. She added that companies and individuals who use fake licenses do so to gain public trust and conduct business. 'Members of the public are urged to verify the authenticity of any SAHPRA-issued licence by contacting the Authority directly through the official communication channels or checking on the SAHPRA website, under 'databases and registers'." She said SAHPRA is in the process of sourcing a system that uses barcoding as a means of authenticating these certificates and that it will also embark on a public outreach campaign, raising awareness on establishing the authenticity of licences.

KZN child (4) left alone dies in Cinderella Park shack fire
A Cinderella Park, KZN, family is struggling to come to terms with the tragic death of their four-year-old boy Ayabonga Tsoeali, who perished in a devastating shack fire over the weekend. The blaze, believed to have been sparked by a candle left burning in the Umzungulu Road shack where Ayabonga was sleeping on Saturday night, left the child burnt beyond recognition. Speaking to The Witness, grieving family member Jabulani Dlamini recounted how they had attended a children's party at a neighbour's home earlier that evening. 'We took the children to the party. 'I was sitting by the gate when my grandson kept coming to show me his bag of sweets. 'Later, I went to visit another neighbour,' says a distraught Dlamini. He described how they drank on the veranda while Ayabonga, tired from the festivities, fell asleep on his lap. 'I carried him home and put him to bed. 'I then went to call his grandmother to watch him, but couldn't find her. 'I searched for another trusted woman in the neighbourhood, but she wasn't around either,' Dlamini says, his voice heavy with guilt. 'On my way back, someone shouted about a shack fire. 'My heart stopped — this would be the third time our home caught fire. 'By the time I arrived, the flames were unstoppable. 'I can't bear this loss. 'He was such a bright, affectionate boy who loved cuddles.' Ward councillor Ram Roy urges greater community vigilance during this high-risk period for shack fires. 'It is sad for this family as they have lost their four-year-old boy. 'I sympathise with them and pray that God be with them,' he says. Roy adds that the construction of these shacks made them vulnerable to fast-spreading fires. 'They are not as tight as a house. 'It causes the fire to escalate. 'Most of these shacks are covered by plastic,' he says. uMgungundlovu District SAPS acting spokesperson Warrant Officer Pancheal Singh says an inquest docket had been opened. 'According to Ayabonga's mother, her son told her that he was tired and wanted to sleep. 'Her father-in-law [Dlamini] took the child to his residence and placed him on the bed in his one-room shack opposite the venue where the party was. 'He then lit a candle, placed it on the chair and left to go back to the house party,' says Singh. He adds that Ayabonga's remains were taken to the Fort Napier Mortuary. 'The fire department is conducting a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the fire,' he says. Swift action by law enforcement and private security companies brought an armed robbery to a halt at Granor Passi in Glen Marais in Ekurhuleni Tuesday afternoon. 'The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department's (EMPD) Northern Region task team, working alongside the Benoni Flying Squad and several private security companies, including R&D Risk services, CLC, ER24, CPF Sector 2, Red Ops, Mamba, SSS, Motor Track, Jungle Boyz, Rapid Response and AfriForum responded to the robbery in progress at approximately 12:49,' says EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato. Kempton Express reports that when officers arrived, they found six suspects at the scene, four men aged between 40 and 44, and two women aged between 33 and 36. 'It is believed that five of the suspects are foreign nationals and one is a South African citizen.' During the incident, the suspects allegedly forced open a safe and assaulted a female staff member, striking her in the mouth with a firearm. She was taken to hospital. Although no money was taken from the premises, officers recovered three firearms at the scene. 'The suspects were arrested and are facing multiple charges, including business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and contravention of immigration laws for being undocumented foreign nationals.'
