Unemployment rate hits 10-year low at 3% in April

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's unemployment rate dropped from 3.1% in March to 3% in April, the lowest in 10 years, according to a report released by the statistics department today. Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the number of unemployed people decreased by 0.7% to 525,900 in April 2025, compared with 529,600 in March.
Advertisement 'A promising national economic position has contributed to stable progress in Malaysia's labour force, with an increase in the number of employed people and higher labour force participation rates, while unemployment continues to decrease,' Bernama reported him as saying. Uzir said labour force numbers continued their upward trend in April, increasing by 0.2% to 17.34 million people compared with 17.31 million in March. 'Consequently, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 70.8% compared with 70.7% in March,' he said. In terms of the economic sector, Uzir said the services sector remains a key driver of employment growth, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation, food and beverage services, as well as transport and storage activities. He said positive trends were also recorded across the manufacturing, construction, agriculture and mining and quarrying sectors. Uzir said the unemployment rate for youths aged 15 to 24 years remained unchanged at 10.3% in April 2025, with 298.3 thousand unemployed youths. He said the number of people outside the labour force rose to 7.17 million in April compared with 7.16 million the previous month, mainly due to housework and family responsibilities, which accounted for 43.7%, followed by schooling and training reasons at 41.1%. He said the country's labour force was expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. Tengku Zafrul also clarifies that the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries are not affected and imports to US remain at zero tariff. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 1): Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (Miti) Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia will have 6,911 lines with zero tariffs following protracted negotiations with their American counterparts. He said this amounted to 61 per cent of the total 11,260 tariff lines requested by the United States (US). A tariff line refers to an item listed in a country's tariff schedule, which is used to classify merchandise goods for the purpose of applying tariffs. The agreement follows extensive negotiations involving multiple ministries, agencies and stakeholders while ensuring Malaysia's national policies and strategic interests are not compromised. 'This is a systematic and methodical approach to determine our final offer to the United States and we've made a comprehensive offer that covers 98 per cent of all tariff lines but have only agreed to liberalise 61 per cent,' Zafrul said at a press conference at Miti headquarters today. He also clarified that the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries are not affected and imports to US remain at zero tariff. He reiterated that, as of today, the tariff rate has dropped from 25 per cent to 19 per cent and is in effect. Zafrul also addressed the issue of non-tariff barriers stating that the government is committed to reforming bureaucratic processes that have historically been seen as impediments to trade and investments. 'We acknowledge that some non-tariff barriers arise from inefficiencies in the system and we see this as an opportunity to improve our processes. However, these reforms will not come at the expense of Malaysia's regulatory standards,' he said. Despite the concessions, Zafrul also said Malaysia drew the line on key sectors. He said the government refused US requests to abolish excise duties on vehicles, tobacco and alcohol and declined to eliminate import permit requirements or relax foreign equity caps in strategic sectors. 'We are not compromising our economic sovereignty or national security. Excise duties, import licenses and equity restriction remain in place where necessary,' he said. Malaysian pharmaceuticals, semiconductors exempt from US tariffs, minister says
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian pharmaceutical products and semiconductors will be exempt from U.S. tariffs, the country's trade minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said on Friday. "At this time, exports of semiconductor and pharmaceutical (products) remain at 0% (tariff rate)," he said at a press briefing after the United States imposed a tariff of 19% on Malaysia's exports. He said the levy on Malaysian goods would be effective from August 8. Tengku Zafrul also said that there had been no agreement with the United States or other countries on the exclusive supply of rare earths. "In fact, no such request has been made by the U.S.," he said. Gaining access to rare earth metals has been a crucial part of U.S. trade negotiations, with rival China currently in control of 90% of global processing capacity. Critical minerals were also under discussion during U.S. negotiations with Indonesia. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia and the United States would release a joint statement on tariffs at the weekend. The trade ministry said in a statement earlier on Friday that the tariff outcome came after sustained engagement by both countries and did not cross any of Malaysia's "red lines" or compromise its sovereign rights. - Reuters
