Malegaon: Time stands still at Bhikku Chowk in Malegaon, as evident from the wall clock at Nissar Dairy that stopped ticking at 9.45pm when a bomb blast rocked the textile town of north Maharashtra on Sept 29, 2008.
The clock still hangs in the dairy, owned by Ijaj Ahmad, serving as a grim reminder of the blast that claimed the lives of six people and left nearly 100 others injured.
Bhikku Chowk, a crowded destination for those seeking tea, snacks, and paan, remains marked by the remnants of the explosion. Some shops still bear splinter marks from the blast, and local residents have not forgotten the night of the attack 17 years ago.
Shopkeepers in the bustling chowk said the intensity of the blast was such that the metal shutters of the shops were cut through.
Mohammad Sayyed, a cycle repair shop owner, recalled the motorcycle, in which the prosecution claimed the bomb was planted, was parked just outside his shop. He was at a nearby masjid offering namaz during Ramzan and was spared from the blast. "The blast occurred just a few minutes before people left the masjid.
If it exploded 10 minutes later, the disaster would have been huge," he added.
Shaikh Hamid Shaikh Chand, a 63-year-old paan stall owner, said a large number of people frequent the chowk from early morning until late at night. "Somehow, I was saved from the blast. But the sound of the blast rang in my ears for nearly a week. A boy named Jamil, who used to work with me, suffered serious injuries," he recalled.
The chowk has remained largely unchanged in the past 17 years, but the road from Bhikku Chowk to Anjuman Chowk has been named Shaheed Hemant Karkare Road.
Late IPS officer Hemant Karkare was heading the state anti-terrorism squad in 2008 when the blast occurred and closely oversaw the investigation.
On Thursday, many Malegaon residents gathered at Bhikku Chowk, hoping for a conviction in the case. They believed that Karkare conducted a thorough investigation. "His efforts have been in vain. Despite all the evidence against the accused, they have been released. This is no justice," said Sikandar Ali, a powerloom worker.
A police chowkey, located just a few metres from the site of the blast, remains in place. Local residents said the police vigil has generally increased. Several Malegaon residents, particularly from the Muslim community, felt distraught by the court verdict.
Maulana Abdul Qayyum, district pof Jamiat-e-Ulma, said, "If govt felt that the accused are innocent, then why did it not trace the people who were involved in the blast? We have full trust in the judiciary, and we will go to the higher court for justice.
We are confident that the deceased and injured people and their families will surely get justice."
The communally sensitive town is divided along the Mausam river saw some celebrations in some parts. Members of a Hindu organisation gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi statue to celebrate the court, and they shouted slogans in the name of former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, who was among the accused.

Home Minister will make statement in both the Houses on Monday over alleged Dharmasthala mass burials, says Dinesh Gundu Rao

Home Minister G. Parameshwara will make statements in the two houses of State Legislature on Monday (August 18) over alleged Dharmasthala burials. The statements will reveal several facts related to the ongoing investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the case, said Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in Mangaluru on Friday. Taking to reporters after the district-level Independence Day programme at the Nehru Maidan, the Minister said the SIT was set up following demand by several people, including former Supreme Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda, Pattadhikari of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala and left wing activists. The dispassionate inquiry by the SIT will reveal the truth behind the serious allegation made by the 50-year-old former sanitation worker. Asked about the interview given by the complainant, who is protected under witness protection scheme, to a national news channel on Thursday, wherein he revealed names of people who joined in burying bodies with him and also made new allegations against Dharmasthala temple administration, Mr. Rao said the SIT will definitely look into the veracity of his allegations and take necessary legal action. The State government and the police were behaving responsibly with regard to the case. 'Our intention (in setting up SIT) was to bring the truth out'. Whether the SIT will continue with the excavation in new sites with only one skeletal remains being found in one of the 17 sites that were excavated so far, the Minister said Mr. Parameshwara's statements will reveal further steps to be taken up by the SIT. The SIT, he said, has done a good work in the case. The government was keen in collecting evidence related to the complaint and it will not keep answering to speculative reports on the case. The SIT will also look into the likely conspiracy to defame the Dharmasthala temple and temple administrators in this case. Reacting to the call by BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra to his party legislators to assemble in Dharmasthala on Sunday, Mr. Rao it was not surprise to see the BJP taking political mileage from this sensitive matter, Mr. Rao said.

Conversion racket busted in Kashi: Man posed as Hindu, married 12 women across three states

LUCKNOW: A shocking case of identity fraud and religious conversion came to light in Varanasi on Wednesday, as Sarnath police arrested Sharaf Rizvi from Farrukhabad for posing as a Hindu man named Samrat Singh and allegedly marrying multiple Hindu women under false pretences. Rizvi was caught after a woman from Sarnath filed a complaint, accusing him of duping her into a relationship by promising marriage, extorting ₹5 lakh, and pressuring her to convert to Islam. The accused has since been remanded to judicial custody. According to Sarnath police, Rizvi admitted during interrogation that he had trapped at least 12 women across three states, including Uttar Pradesh, by creating fake identities on matrimonial websites. He targeted women, extracted money and gifts, and revealed his real identity only after securing physical relationships, often pressuring them to convert to Islam. Police sources said Rizvi used a calculated three-point strategy: he identified women on matrimonial platforms, presented himself as a wealthy Hindu businessman, and exploited them emotionally and financially. Once trust was gained, he would introduce the idea of conversion post-engagement or after physical intimacy. Rizvi reportedly maintained three Facebook accounts under different Hindu names, Samrat Singh, Ajay Kumar, and Vijay Kumar. He told police that his real account as Sharaf Rizvi barely gained attention online, while his Hindu aliases received instant responses, prompting him to double down on the impersonation. Through sites like Rizvi contacted over 100 women after purchasing a subscription, engaging with them and their families. He fabricated elaborate lies, claiming to be an exporter with properties in multiple cities. When asked to introduce his family via video call, he had friends pose as relatives. To further convince families, Rizvi rented luxury cars, wore expensive clothing, and portrayed a high-profile lifestyle. Once trust was secured, he would visit the women, establish physical relationships, and request money for wedding expenses. In several cases, he allegedly cut off contact after taking money.

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi over Jagdish Tytler's presence at I-Day flag hoisting

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has attacked the Congress after the 1984 Sikh riots accused Jagdish Tytler was seen at the party headquarters during the Independence Day flag leader Amit Malviya, in a post on X, said: "Jagdish Tytler, the man who unleashed genocide on Sikhs at Rajiv Gandhi's behest, is once again seen alongside Rahul Gandhi at the Congress HQ. Some stains don't wash away, no matter how much time passes. The Gandhis are unapologetic too."advertisementBJP leader Radhika Khera also took aim at the Congress, posting on X: "On August 15, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who was absent from the traditional Red Fort event, was present at the Congress headquarters to hoist the national flag. Behind him stood the same accused killer of the 1984 Sikh genocide, Jagdish Tytler, whose bloody hands were covered up by his father Rajiv Gandhi, calling it a 'natural reaction'. Even on the day of patriotism, the 'prince' stands with a rioter. This is the true face of Congress: a legacy of conspiracy and treachery against the nation. And yes, this is the same Indira Bhawan from where Rahul announced a 'fight against the Indian state'." Responding to the BJP's attack, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammad defended the party and countered: "Jagdish Tytler is not convicted but convicted rapists who gang raped Bilkis Bano (who was 7 months pregnant) and other women in her family, killed her 2-year-old daughter by crushing her skull to the wall, were released by Narendra Modi and used for campaigning in the 2022 assembly election! That's horrific. So shut up Amit Malviya."- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Rahul Gandhi#Independence Day 2025
