Britain's answer to the 'leaning tower of Pisa' could turn seaside town into popular hotspot
A Somerset seaside town is hoping to woo in legions of tourists - by offering them the chance to pose with its answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
The famous Italian landmark - which leans at an gentle angle of 3.9 degrees - attracts more than five million visitors a year.
However, the medieval stone church tower of St Andrews in Burnham-on-Sea, which is around the same age as Pisa's tower, leans by an incredible 15 degrees, making it more than four times wonkier.
Local tourist chiefs are frustrated that the small Somerset beach town receives a tiny number of visitors compared to Pisa.
To add insult to injury, Burnham has just been called the UK's third worst seaside spot by the Which? organisation.
The Somerset town was given one star for its tourist attractions, food and drink, and shopping, and two stars for its pier (Britain's smallest) and seafront (which features three lighthouses).
The town's visitor centre is dismayed that the survey by the Which? Organisation completely neglected to mention Burnham's hidden claim to international fame: one of the world's most leaning buildings.
The 78ft high church tower was built on sandy shore close to the beach in the 14th century – and has been alarmingly wonky ever since.
It looks extraordinary from some angles but is considered stable. The tower is only occasionally open to visitors however.
Manager of Burnham's visitor centre, Ian Jefferies, has climbed the narrow spiral staircase and stood on the top.
He says: 'It's amazing up there. It's so tilted it feels like you're going to fall off.'
A plumb line drop from the tower would be three feet away from the tower at ground level.
Now a visitors heritage trail has been launched in the town using wall-mounted QR codes that provide more information on 31 of its historic landmarks.
Of course, the leaning tower is one of the highlights.
With only 18 reviews on Tripadvisor the Burnham tower is lagging somewhat behind Pisa's rival, which has 24,224 reviews.
Nevertheless, one Somerset visitor describes that 'the tower leans beautifully'.
The pretty stone church is considered an unsung historic landmark by its few visitors.
It contains rare and beautiful marble statues by Sir Christopher Wren.
Despite the spectacular lean, the tower used to function as a lighthouse with a lantern on top warning ships of perilous sandbanks around the entrance to the River Parrett.
Classic photo op: Pisa's tower has attracted tourists who want to see its famous tilt in person for centuries
In fact, as well as the Leaning Tower of Burnham, the town also has a bizarre collection of lighthouses.
It's picturesque nine-legged 30ft-high wooden one was built in 1832 on offshore tidal flats.
It has been voted one of the world's most beautiful lighthouses.
Another lighthouse is a bizarre round stone cylinder built by a local vicar 300 years ago as part of a seafront house.
The third stands incongruously among suburban houses some way inland – it's 100ft tower is now a private house.
SO, WHY DOES THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA LEAN?
Theories suggest that the 57 metre (186-feet) tower, which has been a mystery to experts for hundreds of years, began to sink after construction - which began in 1173.
The cause was due to a flawed design which meant it had a foundation that was only three-metres deep and was set in weak, unstable subsoil.
This base was also softer on the southern side, resulting in the eponymous lean, so builders tried to compensate for it while they built its eight storeys upwards.
They did this by making the floors shorter on one side than the other, making the structure curved as well as tilting.
The medieval bell tower, a symbol of the power of the maritime republic of Pisa in the Middle Ages, has managed to survive, undamaged, at least four strong earthquakes that have hit the region since 1280.

'I went to Benidorm on holiday and couldn't believe cost of a pint'
A man, who is known as the Benidorm Fanatic to his TikTok followers, recently headed to the popular holiday destination and was left gobsmacked by the price of a drink A Brit was gobsmacked by the cost of a pint in Benidorm, despite being a frequent visitor to Spain. Known amongst his TikTok followers as the Benidorm Fanatic, he recounts his visit to Uncle Ron's, a bar renowned for its affordably priced pints, where he found himself pleasantly surprised by just how much bang he got for his buck. In his popular video, he raves: "I tell you what, I believe it's actually a very, very nice pint as well, so it comes to the equivalent of about 84p in British money. Let's go and try it out, shall we? Let's give it a try." Upon reaching the bar, he continued: "So there you go, I'll give you a euro, a €1 pint, and I'll take that. Let's try this €1 pint. Look at that - a nice, clean, cold pint. It's got a nice, good head on it - let's try it." He enthusiastically shared his verdict, saying: "That is actually one of the best pints I've had in one of the popular bars. That is actually one of the best pints I've had in Benidorm to be honest with you. €1, I'll drink them all day." The video quickly gained traction, prompting viewers to share their impressions and even their own tales of Benidorm adventures. Among the comments, one user exclaimed: "Wow," while another who'd been there on holiday exclaimed: "I was there last week." Someone else who'd be there said: "Lovely pint. Had many." Whil a fellow TikToker simply added: "Bargain." Uncle Ron's, a hit with British holidaymakers in Benidorm, is famed for its budget-friendly tipples and hearty meals. TripAdvisor reviews boast of the establishment's offerings from breakfast through to dinner, with an average rating of 3.8 out of 5 on the platform, suggesting it's a must-visit for those seeking a decent meal and drinks while away. In the review section, one visitor commented: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." Another shared their experience: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third reviewer added: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. Would we go again? Certainly would!"

Spanish holiday hotspot hotel is accused of having the 'worst breakfast in Europe' as diner urges tourists to 'avoid' the 'bad tasting' eatery
One of Spain 's holiday hotspot hotels has been flagged by tourists as having the 'worst breakfast in Europe'. Hotel Atlántico, a four-star hotel nestled in the heart of Madrid, has received scathing reviews from diners on TripAdvisor. 'The rooms are nice and comfortable. Sadly that's where it ends,' one dissatisfied guest wrote. As well as complaining about lack of sleep due to hearing 'every creak and step in this place', the guest who stayed in Hotel Atlántico in May 2025, had strong feelings about the 'bad tasting' breakfast. 'The breakfast is the worst I have come across in all of Europe,' they warned. 'Do not have it.' Describing the food in more detail, a second guest wrote: 'My only complaint is the poor quality of the breakfast experience; self-service machine coffee, wet slices of ham, tasteless slices of plastic cheese and slightly stale bread one morning. 'One member of staff only each day and they couldn't keep up with everything that needed doing.' 'Plenty of Cava though,' they added, 'so not all bad.' Other 'disappointed' reviews pointed to the 'poor selection' at breakfast and its 'weird layout configuration'. More diplomatic TripAdvisor users suggested skipping the substandard breakfast entirely. Instead, they recommend eating at one of the many cafes available a stone's throw away from the hotel on La Gran Via - one of Madrid's most popular shopping areas. There were a range of other opinions on the breakfast with one guest describing it as 'very good' while Mick from Ayrshire in South West Scotland labelling it as 'ok'. 'The lack of chopped fruit and plain yogurt limited out healthy options compared with hotels on our travels,' Mick, who stayed at the hotel with his family in September 2024, penned. 'Otherwise all the staff were friendly and helpful and I would recommend this hotel if you want a central venue in Madrid,' he added. Despite mixed feedback, Hotel Atlántico advertises itself as having an 'excellent breakfast according to clients' on its website. A double room at the central hotel will set punters back around £250 for one night. Breakfast costs an additional £10. Reviews of the hotel breakfast are mixed with one disgruntled guest describing it as the 'worst I have come across in all of Europe' while others said it was 'OK' or 'very good' Eva Garcia, Hotel Atlántico's Assistant Director, responded to one user's scathing review of the breakfast buffet by 'apologising for not exceeding your expectations'. 'We have a buffet style breakfast with hot and cold meals (different types of eggs, sausages, bacon, cheese, cured ham, ham, turkey, cakes, jam, honey, yogurts, different types of bread, fruits, vegetables, coffees and juices, and also Cava),' she wrote. 'We strive to ensure each and every guest experience is satisfying. The rate is 12 euros. Please consider the value for money.'

Chilling Clown Motel with thousands of creepy clown dolls and cemetery next door
Welcome to the Clown Motel - 'America's scariest motel' and home to a 5,000-strong clown collection. Just make sure you're prepared for purported 7ft uninvited guests in the middle of the night Anyone looking for a good night's rest while travelling in Nevada may do well to avoid the Clown Motel. Although certainly memorable, anyone who has ever sat through a screening of Stephen King's It will likely sleep with one eye open should they ever find themselves bunking down in one of the motel's 31 unique rooms. Located in the former mining town of Tonopah, approximately three hours outside of Las Vegas, this 'world-famous' landmark is positively filled to the brim with clown figurines - 5,000 to be exact. Oh, and to make visitors' stays all the more disquieting, the Clown Motel is situated slap bang in front of Tonopah Cemetery, a supposed ghostly hot spot swathed in local myth and mystery. Those with a mortal fear of clowns might do well to put their foot firmly on the pedal and drive on by, but for braver souls, a truly one-of-a-kind travelling experience awaits... Indeed, as per the official website, the Clown Motel is "the first choice for Ghost Hunters, Paranormal Investigators, Spooky Fun lovers, YouTubers, Horror Filmmakers, Clown Lovers, and more". The motel first opened its doors way back in 1985 with a collection of 'just' 150 clowns. Leona and Leroy David built the property in memory of their clown-loving father, who is buried in the adjacent Tonopah Cemetery, and decided to use his impressive collection as a theme. Since then, things have continued to grow and evolve. The establishment prides itself on being 'America's scariest motel', as evidenced in the range of creatively named spooky rooms. Drawing from horror movie history, guests - whether they're there to commune with the dead or simply bed down for the night - can choose to stay in The Exorcist room, the Chucky room, or the Halloween room -all decked out, of course, with plenty of eerie artwork. Whether you'll be left laughing or screaming by the time the night's through remains to be seen. However, Tripadvisor reviews left by previous patrons offer some idea of what's in store. One happy customer wrote: "We had good fun, and even better, we weren't murdered. Not even a little bit murdered. The guy at the front desk is excellent. Truly excellent. We'd certainly come back someday. Did I mention that no clowns murdered us? They didn't even try. #HadFun #NotMurdered." Another enthused: "We stayed in the IT room and had a blast! They offered an EMF reader, and we had fun looking for spirits in the old graveyard. This was a fun experience and we will remember it for a long time to come!" Now, any bumps in the night will likely be due to nerves rather than any red-nosed terrors lurking under your bed. However, there are those who are convinced that something otherworldly stalks its candy-striped corridors. According to the Las Vegas Ghost Tours website, those who've slept in room 108, which features a life-size mural of Pennywise, have reported inexplicable encounters, while a mischievous spirit referred to as 'The Trickster' is believed to move belongings around, and may even make them vanish completely. As well as disembodied voices and disquieting scratching sounds, some guests swear to having woken to the sight of a 7-foot-tall clown standing ominously at the foot of their bed, while others claim to have answered knocks on their door, only to find there's nobody on the other side.
