UK shuts both its Afghan resettlement schemes without warning
The UK govt has without warning shut down two legal schemes that helped over 34,000 Afghans claim sanctuary in Britain, sparking fury among the Afghan diaspora.

Immigration rule changes laid in parliament on Tuesday ended the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) for new applications. The scheme, launched in April 2021, was for those who had helped Britain fight the Taliban or who worked for the UK govt and feared reprisal.
The Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS), which opened in Jan 2022 to help women, girls and minority groups come legally to the UK, was also shut.
Migration minister Seema Malohtra said the UK will not launch any further pathways.
Dr Nooralhaq Nasimi, director of the Afghanistan and Central Asian Association in London, which helps Afghan refugees in Britain, was angry about the closure and said Afghans were facing 'daily humiliation' by the UK press. 'If they welcome the people of Ukraine and Hong Kong, there shouldn't be any discrimination against Afghans.
Trump has done the same thing by introducing a blanket ban on Afghans,' he told TOI.
'The UK press is promoting bad things about Afghan society. We were once part of Persian civilisation and invented lots of good things,' he said, adding that closing all legal routes meant more Afghans would come to the UK illegally.
Nasimi added the two schemes had not even evacuated the right people to date. 'Most of the Afghans evacuated so far are from a Pashtun background, who have tribal links with the Taliban.

They have come to the UK, got their residency, and travelled back to Afghanistan to support the Taliban. The Pashtuns are wealthy and live in palaces now. But the people who really deserved to come, for example individuals who worked with Nato, are still stuck in Afghanistan or facing deportation from Pakistan and Iran.
There are women, girls, musicians, and activists all stuck in Afghanistan who would like to come to Britain.
We are contacted daily by people who tried to come via these schemes who never got any response. Millions face starvation.'
Defence secretary John Healey said ARAP could be closed 'not least so that defence efforts and resources can be focused where they are most needed — on our nation's security.'
Over 12,800 Afghans have been resettled in Britain under ACRS. By March 31, 2025, 21,316 Afghans had been relocated under ARAP. A further 22,000 ARAP applicants are in a backlog.

In the years following the 2020 US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassim Suleimani, the country's retaliation strategy has largely avoided dramatic, direct confrontations. According to US prosecutors, the Islamic Republic recruited non-state actors, including American ex-convicts, organised crime members, and gang affiliates, to carry out targeted violence inside the United States. A Justice Department complaint revealed that Iranian officials plotted to assassinate US President Donald Trump during the 2024 election campaign. The plan was led by Farhad Shakeri, an Afghan national living in Tehran. Instead of deploying an Iranian operative, Shakeri recruited two men - Carlisle "Pop" Rivera, a Brooklyn pipe fitter, and his friend Jonathon Loadholt of Staten Island - he met in a US prison over a decade earlier. Both were arrested by federal agents before the plan advanced. This was not an isolated case. US law enforcement has identified similar plots in recent years. In 2022, Iranian officials allegedly tried to hire Russian mafia hitmen to kill Masih Alinejad, a journalist and critic of the regime. Another operation involved a Canadian member of the Hells Angels, allegedly tasked with killing an Iranian defector in Maryland. In 2011, US officials thwarted an attempt to bomb a Washington, DC, restaurant in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador, a plan that relied on someone with supposed ties to the Mexican drug cartels. Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism scholar at Georgetown University, said that while Hezbollah (Iran's proxy) has had some success embedding operatives in the US, recent plots have not featured trained agents. "The incidents we've seen in recent years have probably been from the C-team," Hoffman told The New York Times. "C-team" refers to a shorthand, somewhat informal way of describing less skilled, less trained, or lower-tier operatives, unlike an "A-team," which would be composed of elite, professional agents or operatives with specialised training. Despite public warnings about Iranian sleeper cells, the US has not seen evidence of major coordinated activity by trained Iranian or Hezbollah operatives on American soil in recent years. In 2017, two men in New York and Michigan were arrested for conducting surveillance on potential targets for Hezbollah. In 2019, a New Jersey man was sentenced for scouting major landmarks in new York like Times Square and the Statue of Liberty after receiving military-style training from the group. Following last month's US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection issued warnings about possible retaliation, including from sleeper cells. Internal data shows that about 1,700 Iranian nationals were arrested at the southern US border from October 2021 to November 2024. The records do not specify whether those individuals were fleeing the regime or aligned with it. Soon after the strikes, ICE detained nearly a dozen Iranians on immigration violations. Among them was a man labelled as a known or suspected terrorist and another who admitted ties to Hezbollah. One, Ribvar Karimi, served in the Iranian army.

Baloch pro-independence leader Hyrbyair Marri has sharply criticised Pakistan's assumption of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) presidency for the month of July, calling it "a profound affront to global human rights" and a dangerous move that threatens global stability. In a post on X, Marri accused the UN of legitimising a state he described as built on oppression and deception. 'When the accused are handed the gavel, international credibility erodes,' Marri said, warning that privilege has replaced accountability in global diplomacy. Referring to a recent statement by Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN on promoting peace and diplomacy, Marri called it ironic. 'The very country preaching peace today has exported terrorism and jihad while practising religious persecution at home,' he stated.
