Rangers chief confident Russell Martin will win over sceptical supporters
After Kevin Thelwell was officially installed as sporting director on Monday, the 39-year-old former Southampton boss, who had a loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, was confirmed in the Ibrox hot seat on Friday morning.
However, Martin's arrival has not been met with universal approval by Gers supporters.

Stewart revealed Martin was the only person offered the job and believes the Ibrox club have taken a diligent approach to finding a successor to Philippe Clement, who left in February before former captain Barry Ferguson took over until the end of the season.
'Firstly, we're always very sensitive and aware of supporters' sentiment on any issue,' said Stewart.
'And, yeah, I'm aware that supporters have strong views on who the right person for the role is.
'So we'll always factor that in to a degree, but equally, I've been talking a lot about process and making sure we've got people and experts in that are qualified to make decisions.
'So we've really put our trust in our process, making sure we've got right people in to make decisions and with a lot of discipline.
'We're not oblivious to the noise at all, not at all.
'But I think, because we conducted such a thorough process to take us to this point where we've appointed Russell, we're confident the supporters will get behind him, particularly when they see him in action.'
Stewart believes the appointment of former MK Dons and Swansea boss Martin, which followed last Friday's takeover by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, signalled a 'seismic' change at the Ibrox club.
Stewart said: 'It clearly is incredibly significant.
'That's two seismic changes. In fact, three, if you look we've had a change of ownership, followed by our sporting director coming in, followed by a head coach being announced.
'That's an awful lot of activity for one club in one week.
'So I think it does herald a really positive new chapter for the club.
'It is a seismic period for the club and sets a really strong foundation for the future.'
After a trophyless season for Rangers, Stewart outlined his expectations for Martin.
He said: 'First and foremost about taking the current squad that we've got and making it better, then also adding to the squad over the summer.
'And it's about competing again.
'I think we all accept that last season just passed, we were way off, and that's not where we want to be.
'That's not acceptable as a club. So it's about competing again on all fronts and that is the expectation.'

An initial £20million of investment has been promised and a share issue will follow to help raise more funds. With the Light Blues in Champions League qualifying action on July 22/23 and 29/30, the summer rebuild must start soon. We looked at how Martin could transform Rangers, in particular by recruiting trusted former players. Gers chief Stewart acknowledged there is a lot of ground to be made up on Celtic in the league, but believes Martin has arrived early enough for them to make signings before the Euro qualifiers next month. Speaking in an interview with Rangers TV, he said: 'There is a lot of hard work to be done, just to be clear. I think there always is every pre-season for Rangers because the European qualifiers come so early, so let's not shy away from that. 'That said, we have got Russell in and the transfer window doesn't open for another ten days and the first team don't return for another two weeks, so actually you could look at it glass half full and say we have got him in well in advance of those two key events. 'But let's not kid ourselves, there is a lot of hard work to be done but I know Russell is determined to get stuck into that. 'The potential of Rangers, we know it is unfulfilled at the moment. 'This is a huge club and supporters, players, management and staff, we have all been frustrated at not having achieved the heights. 'My excitement and optimism levels have definitely increased but they were always there because there is so much that is positive about this club.' Stewart was asked how Martin's experience in both Scotland and England during his career will help them in the recruitment process. He said that combining Martin's knowledge with Thelwell's contacts book should lead to positive results in the transfer market. Stewart said that they will pay close attention to the Scottish and English markets, as players there will have an understanding of the British game. But that won't stop them from scouting players further afield - the only condition being that they must ALREADY be suited to playing in Scotland, rather than trying to mould them into the finished product. He said: 'Having an understanding of the Scottish game I would say is a key factor because every league is unique and we can look at some of the fixtures that have to be played as part of the SPFL. 'Every ground has its nuances and every club has its nuances, so somebody that comes in with an understanding of that is a huge asset. 'Equally, when it comes to recruiting players having a knowledge of markets outside of Scotland and players outside of Scotland, and off-the-pitch talent outside of Scotland as well, is a huge advantage. He is in line to win a first cap in Vaduz against Liechtenstein as he gets set to join up with the squad ahead of jetting out Ross Doohan looks set to answer Scotland 's goalkeeping SOS ahead of Monday's friendly with Liechtenstein. The Aberdeen shotstopper - who has penned a pre-contract with first club Celtic - is in line to win a first cap in Vaduz. Steve Clarke was forced into a frantic search for cover after Angus Gunn limped out of Friday's defeat to Iceland after just two minutes. Untried Ciaran Slicker was thrown into action but, with just nine minutes of football under his belt in the last 22 months, froze on the big occasion and was at fault for all three goals in the 3-1 defeat. To add to Clarke's woes back-up Robby McCrorie was injured in the warm-up meaning the Kilmarnock keeper and Gunn join a lengthy goalkeeping casualty list that had already seen Craig Gordon, Liam Kelly and Zander Clark ruled out. Now Doohan looks set to join up with the squad ahead of flying out to Liechtenstein on Sunday. The 27-year-old made 18 appearances for the Dons last season and was capped right through the youth ranks up to U-21 level where he made 13 appearances. Bournemouth kid Callan McKenna has also been training with the squad. But the 18-year-old former Queen's Park keeper will likely just be cover. Speaking after Friday's defeat Clarke said: "It's difficult for Cieran. I feel for him. "He got thrown into a situation where he maybe wasn't quite ready for it. But Craig's injured, Liam Kelly's injured, Zander Clark was injured. "I mentioned back in March that it was something I thought might come back to bite us. The only good thing is it came in a friendly match. "For sure I'll try and call up another goalkeeper. I've had young Callan McKenna who's just turned 18-years of age, training with us and he'll travel. I'll see if I can find another one somewhere in Scotland that's not on holiday." Rangers winger attracting 'interest' from three clubs

"So, unless things come in that really help the club to build and move forward, I don't think it's a necessity to do that at all. "That's my understanding of it." Both Raskin and Diomande impressed for Rangers last season, each netting in a 3-2 victory over Celtic at Parkhead.
