Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday suggested the Maharashtra government to formulate a new law for the cooperative sector in the state considering the evolving economic conditions . The cooperative sector would play a key role in improving the financial condition of people from rural areas, he said, and urged the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, the apex cooperative bank in the state, to study the socio-economic impact of the cooperative movement in the state.Addressing a public function here, Gadkari said, "It is my request to Maharashtra chief minister and deputy chief minister to come up with a revised act for the cooperative sector. We must find a golden mean between the Cooperative Act and the Companies Act and formulate a new legislation accordingly." "There is a need to amend the laws governing cooperative establishments to align with evolving economic conditions," he said. The Road Transport and Highways Minister said the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank should conduct a comprehensive study on the socio-economic impact of the cooperative movement in the state. "The socio-economic impact of the cooperative movement in Maharashtra should be studied across the state at the tehsil and district levels. It should measure employment, per capita income and growth rate," he said.Highlighting the economic imbalance between sectors, Gadkari said while the manufacturing sector contributes 22 to 24 per cent, the services sector 52 to 54 per cent to the GDP generating maximum Goods and Services Tax (GST). The agriculture and rural development sector contributes only 12 per cent despite employing 60 per cent of the population, he said. "Nearly 30 per cent of people have migrated to cities out of compulsion due to lack of education, jobs and facilities in rural areas," Gadkari said.He described the dairy sector as a model to boost the income of the rural population. Pointing to regional disparities in terms of milk production, he said, "Ahilyanagar district produces 50 lakh litres of milk, while Kolhapur produces 70-80 lakh litres. This has brought prosperity to villages. However, the milk production of the entire Vidarbha region is not even as much as that of Ahilyanagar," he claimed.Gadkari said a Rs 750 crore-worth Mother Dairy plant had been established in Vidarbha, which could significantly boost milk production. "If we can reach 50 lakh litres in the next three years, farmers' suicides will stop. The cooperative sector will play a huge role in uplifting rural areas and improving their financial condition," he said. The minister also praised the emergence of farmer-producer companies involved in processing food grains. "Now, many farmer-producers companies have come forward and started food processing. This will add value and create rural employment," he added.Reflecting on his political journey, Gadkari said the ideologies which once dominated the political scene, gradually became weaker. "When I was the BJP state president, socialism and Left parties were strong. However, they gradually disappeared. There is no alternative to capitalism. We must adapt with changing times," he asserted. He shared insights from international observations to emphasise the importance of reform. "I had seen the same thing during my Shanghai visit as BJP national president. China had only a red flag, but their entire economic policy underwent a change," Gadkari said. He stressed the limitations of the state's control over agricultural pricing, and said, "In the global economy, the government no longer decides prices. "If we do not adapt to the changing times, there is a risk of us being left behind," he said.

Will oppose redevelopment project until everyone gets 500 sq ft houses in Dharavi: Aaditya Thackeray

Days after the state government approved the masterplan of Dharavi Slum Redevelopment Project, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday said his party would oppose the project until and unless all residents are guaranteed 500sqft homes in Dharavi and all the residents are declared eligible for free rehabilitation. Thackeray also demanded that the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Dharavi be granted the same status as Gujarat's GIFT City, claiming that Mumbai was being sidelined in favour of Gujarat and GIFT city was moved to Gujarat from Mumbai's BKC. Addressing a rally in Mulund, Thackeray alleged that the redevelopment plan would lead to large-scale displacement and benefit private players at the expense of long-time Dharavi residents. 'Our party's stand is very clear.. Every resident of Dharavi must get a 500 sqft house. If all residents are not made eligible, we will not allow them to be moved out of Dharavi,' said Thackeray at the 'Ladha Aaplya Mumbaicha' (fight for our Mumbai) campaign organised by the Sena UBT ahead of the BMC elections. Thackeray added that the current plan recognizes only those who settled before 2000 while many with documents dated after 2011 are likely to be excluded from rehabilitation and free houses in Dharavi. According to the eligibility criteria, for people to get homes, ground-floor residents who settled in Dharavi before January 1, 2000, will be eligible for a 350sqft home within Dharavi at no cost. Those who settled between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2011, will receive a 300sqft home outside Dharavi at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Residents who live in upper-floor structures built before November 15, 2022, and ground-floor tenements constructed between January 1, 2011, and November 15, 2022, will be offered rented accommodations outside Dharavi. These residents will also have the option of a hire-purchase scheme for 300 sqft homes. At the rally, Thackeray also raised objections to the proposed use of Deonar dumping ground and other land parcels given for the Dharavi redevelopment project. 'The BMC had clearly stated that the land cannot be given unless it is cleaned first. It is not suitable for people to live there,' he said. He also criticised the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, questioning why the route was designed to benefit Gujarat rather than linking Mumbai to other parts of Maharashtra.

Rs 5K cr agri loan to push rural eco

Lucknow: The state govt will soon disburse a loan of Rs 5,000 crore at a lesser rate to farmers in a bid to give impetus to the rural economy. Under this, an interest subsidy of 3% will be given by both the Central and state govts. A state govt spokesperson said that the focus is now on turning farming into a profitable business, not just a livelihood. "Under this, state-of-the-art infrastructure like cold storage, warehouse, pack house, sorting and grading units will be created across the state. With these facilities, the farmers' produce will be safe and they will get better prices," the spokesperson said. He said that the interference of middlemen will also end. "Preparations have been completed to make farming a profitable deal by promoting infrastructure in cooperatives. The most important thing is that due to better storage and processing arrangements, crops will not be wasted. Along with this, an initiative is being taken to make agriculture a major source of self-reliance and employment," the spokesperson said. Through schemes like Self reliant Integrated Development Scheme and Agri Infrastructure Fund (AIF), farmers will be linked to processing, storage and e-marketing. This will enable them to become not only producers but also successful entrepreneurs and marketing professionals. Govt will also provide them easy loans and technical guidance. Farmers, the spokesperson said, will be able to directly deliver their crop to the market through e-platform, which will give them a fair price and control over the market will remain in the hands of the farmers. Apart from this, infrastructure is being promoted in the cooperative sector, so that new doors of employment and income can be opened in the villages through partnership model.
