Jordan, Egypt agree to boost cross-border electricity capacity to 2,000 MW — minister
Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah told Al Mamlaka TV that the agreement with Egypt also includes continued trilateral energy cooperation with Iraq.
'We have reached a consensus with Egypt to enhance the electrical link between the two countries, reaching 2,000 megawatts.'
Jordan and Egypt have been exchanging electric power via a submarine cable operating at 400 kilovolts since 1999.
This 13-kilometre cable runs across the Gulf of Aqaba with a capacity of 500 megawatts.
The connection is part of the Eight-Country Interconnection Project, which includes Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya and Turkey.
He added that technical committee from the two countries will hold meetings later this year to discuss transport and labour issues.
Qudah said that the volume of Jordanian-Egyptian trade has increased by a more than 30 per cent increase in in 2024. 'Jordanian exports to Egypt also rose by 30 per cent, [and this is] a strong indicator of the growing opportunities for Jordan's private sector in the Egyptian market.
He emphasised the strategic importance of easing trade barriers and enhancing mutual market access, saying, 'Jordan can serve as Egypt's gateway to the Levant, while Egypt can be Jordan's bridge to the African continent, a promising market with vast potential.'
The two sides also signed nine cooperation agreements across several sectors on Tuesday, including industry, economy, local development, tourism, and energy. The agreements were finalised during the 33rd session of the Jordanian-Egyptian Higher Committee, held in Amman and chaired by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly.

Jordan sees 15.6% rise in tourist numbers in first seven months of 2025
AMMAN — The number of tourists visiting Jordan in the first seven months of 2025 surged by 15.6 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The figures, cited by Al Mamlaka TV, said that nearly 4 million visitors arrived in Jordan during this period, up from 3.4 million in the first seven months of 2024. Arab nationals accounted for the largest share, with close to 2 million visitors, followed by Europeans at 500,000 and Asian tourists at 150,000. Figures from the Central Bank indicate a slight dip in tourism revenue in June, but overall earnings grew by 11.9 per cent in the first half of the year, reaching $3.7 billion. The ministry forecasts tourism income to hit $7.7 billion in 2025, marking a 6 per cent growth rate.

Electronic wallet transfers in Jordan reach JD3.56 billion in seven months
AMMAN — The total value of money transfers made through electronic wallets in Jordan has reached approximately JD3.56 billion since the beginning of this year through the end of July, according to the Jordanian Payment and Clearing Systems Company (JoPACC). These transfers were carried out over 51.94 million transactions, JoPACC said. In July alone, electronic wallet transfers amounted to around JD588 million, marking a 12.1 per cent increase compared to June's JD525 million. The number of transactions also rose significantly, reaching 9.15 million in July, a 14.6 per cent increase from June's JD7.99 million, JoPACC said. JoPACC's latest monthly report revealed that the number of electronic wallet users in Jordan stood at 2.63 million by the end of July, representing a slight decline of 1.5 per cent from June. Jordanians constitute 87.8 per cent of users, numbering about 2.31 million, while non-Jordanians make up 12.2 per cent, or roughly 320,000 users, it said. The company said that that money transfers dominate electronic wallet activity, accounting for 88.8 per cent of all transactions. Purchases represent 7.8 per cent, cash withdrawals 2 per cent, and deposits 1.4 per cent.
