Ajay Mitchell named to 2025 Summer League Second Team

USA Today22-07-2025
Now that the 2025 Summer League is in the books, the NBA announced its award winners for the 10-day event. Every July, the league migrates to Las Vegas for nearly two weeks to see the top rookies and young players suit up for their teams.
Fresh off an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder had a couple of notable names on their roster. Ajay Mitchell was one as the 23-year-old was their best player. He was named to the 2025 Summer League Second Team.
Mitchell averaged 20 points on 51.4% shooting, six rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games. Only his Las Vegas performances factored into this accolade. The Thunder also participated in Utah's four-team Summer League.
The other Summer League Second Team members were Kon Knueppel, Ron Holland II, KJ Simpson and Isaac Jones. The Summer League First Team members were SL MVP Kyle Filipowski, Terrence Shannon Jr., Jordan Miller, Nique Clifford and David Jones-Garcia.
The Thunder hope Mitchell can carry his momentum into the 2025-26 season. He had a productive rookie year before a toe injury sidelined him for three months. He has a real shot to win the backup point guard spot and help navigate the bench lineups.

Bronny James Gets Real On Missed Game-Winner Vs. Cooper Flagg

Bronny James Gets Real On Missed Game-Winner Vs. Cooper Flagg originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Lakers fell just short of a big win over the Dallas Mavericks in Cooper Flagg's unofficial NBA debut. Bronny James had a chance to take the lead with the clock winding down, but his potential game-winning three-pointer bounced off the rim with just under four seconds left to play. The Mavs escaped with a two-point win, all while Bronny struggled with eight points on as many shots and a scoreless second half. Even so, the second-year pro isn't too worried about that, and he took pride in his defensive effort: 'I felt good,' James said. 'I felt I could have knocked some more shots down, but it is what it is. You're not going to make them all. I felt my effort on the defensive end was good, and that's what I'm focusing on this year.' Bronny got some stops against Flagg and even challenged him early on with a fadeaway, knocking down five quick points in what promised to be a big night for him. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to keep his foot on the gas. Even so, Lakers assistant coach and Summer League coach Lindsay Harding has no regrets, and she wants to keep putting that kind of pressure on Bronny's shoulders: 'Yes, I want him to fill that responsibility at the end of the game,' Harding said. 'I want him to have the ball in his hands, and I'm going to live and die with whatever shot he takes. It was the decision he made. It was a good shot. I've seen him make it before.' At the end of the day, the Summer League is nothing but a learning experience. While Bronny's shot wasn't falling, his defensive prowess and decision-making turned plenty of heads, and he might be in for a bigger role in year two. Knicks newest signing seemingly throws jab at Nuggets' Nikola Jokic

Guerschon Yabusele has solidified himself in the NBA. After playing with the Boston Celtics from 2017 to 2019, Yabusele spent some time overseas, but made a name for himself during the Olympics a year ago. Unfortunately, he only had a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, and they decided to let him walk. From their perspective, that certainly wasn't ideal, but it was great news for the New York Knicks, who got him at a steal of a price. Yabusele said he had many other options in free agency, including joining the Denver Nuggets and playing with three-time most valuable player Nikola Jokic. Jokic, arguably the best player in the game, would've allowed Yabusele to get open shots and feed off that. However, when speaking about his decision to join the Knicks, he added that Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns can do similar things. 'But then you also look at New York with someone like [Jalen] Brunson, who draws defenders and is also a great passer. And someone like Karl-Anthony Towns, who's super impactful in the game,' he continued. MORE: 'So you start seeing similar strengths in both teams. We took some time to think it through and make sure we were making the right decision. But in the end, we truly believe New York is the best choice we could've made.' It's impossible to compare Jokic and Brunson, and even Towns, in that regard. However, to suggest that either one of them is at the level of Jokic would be unfair, as he's done everything in this league and more. Despite that, Yabusele will now have an opportunity to play in New York and look to win a championship for the Knicks.

Mavericks' Klay Thompson leaves NBA fans speechless with insane 3-point shooting

The post Mavericks' Klay Thompson leaves NBA fans speechless with insane 3-point shooting appeared first on ClutchPoints. In a new video on social media, Dallas Mavericks veteran Klay Thompson reminded everyone why he's still one of the game's most lethal three-point shooters. He's fifth on the NBA's all-time list for three-pointers made. There's a reason why LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson wants to train with Thompson this summer. His shooting inspired a generation of hoopers. Much like the all-time three-point shooting leader and Thompson's former teammate, Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry, it's impressive to watch them train in an open gym. In a new video, Thompson couldn't miss, draining dozens of deep corner threes, per NBA skills coach Chris Brickley's X, formerly Twitter. 'I guess this is what being one of the best shooters ever to live looks like,' Brickley said to a video, nearly two minutes long, of Thompson draining threes. The art of Thompson's shooting is a friendly reminder of what NBA players do to train for games and those huge moments when their team needs a three, and the pressure's on. 'Klay Thompson is back to himself,' Hoops' X, formerly Twitter, said in response to the clip. '70 threes in a row,' to which other users pointed to Thompson's new relationship with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. 'Bro bags Meg and all of a sudden starts showing out again. Study the baddie effect,' said. Another user replied, 'Megan really changed this broke dudes life.' For the second consecutive season, Thompson shot below a 40% clip from deep, connecting on 39.1% of his threes in 2024-25. He also averaged 14.0 points on 41.2% shooting from the floor, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game in his first season with the Mavericks. Flau'jae Johnson reveals message from Mavericks' Klay Thompson When LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson revealed Mavericks' Klay Thompson's message to her, she couldn't help but show excitement over the idea of working out with one of the greatest NBA three-point shooters. Johnson said Thompson has always impressed her with his approach to the game and can't wait to pick his brain and study his approach. 'I text Klay Thompson because I've always been impressed with his balance and his footwork,' Johnson said. 'I would really to come and just want you work. I was like I wanna watch you work. Klay Thompson hit me, and he was like, 'When I get back to Dallas, we can definitely get some shots up.' So I kind of have been reaching out.' Johnson is entering her senior year while Thompson will be entering his 13th NBA season, and second with the Mavericks.
