Tigers get 10th-inning homers from Sweeney and Greene and extend Guardians' skid to 10 with 7-2 win
Javier Báez had two hits and Tarik Skubal struck out 10 as the AL-best Tigers swept the three-game series.
Cleveland was one strike away from ending its skid when closer Emmanuel Clase threw a wild pitch, allowing pinch-runner Zach McKinstry to score the tying run with two outs in the ninth.
The Guardians' double-digit streak is the 11th in team history and the first since Cleveland dropped 11 in a row in 2012. The franchise record is 12 in 1931.
Cleveland's Steven Kwan had three hits, including an RBI double in the eighth.
Báez singled leading off the 10th with automatic runner Parker Meadows aboard and Sweeney followed with a three-run drive down the left-field line off Cade Smith (2-3) for a 4-1 lead.
Skubal — the reigning AL Cy Young winner and possible starter in next week's All-Star Game — allowed three hits in seven innings. It was his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season and 13th of his career.
Chase Lee (4-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Cleveland's Gavin Williams allowed one hit in six innings and struck out eight.
Key moment
The Tigers padded their lead in the 10th on Matt Vierling's RBI double and Greene's two-run homer, his 22nd.
Key stat
Greene is the 15th Detroit player to hit at least 22 homers before the All-Star break. The last was J.D. Martinez, who had 25 in 2015.
Up next
Tigers: Have not named a starter for Monday's series opener against visiting Tampa Bay.
Guardians: Open a six-game trip at Houston on Monday. RHP Tanner Bibee (4-9, 4.20 ERA) goes up against Astros RHP Hunter Brown (9-3, 1.82).

Greg Cote's Hot Button Top 10: Messi rides 2-2 Train, PSG-Chelsea, MLB's stage & more
Note: The Poll Dance has another week off, this time due to an issue with the Herald's poll provider. Hope to have it solved and be back with a new question next week. GREG COTE'S HOT BUTTON TOP 10 (JULY 13): WHAT IN SPORTS HAS GRABBED US THIS WEEK: Our Sunday Hot Button Top 10 notes column -- back after a week off -- brings you what's on our minds, locally and nationally but from a Miami perspective and accentuating stuff that's big, weird, damnable, funny or otherwise worth needling as the sports week just past pivots to the week ahead. Welcome to the 110th edition of your HB10: 1. INTER MIAMI: All abooaarrd! Red-hot Messi keeps 2-2 Train goin'!: Lionel Messi scored two goals Saturday night for the fifth straight league game set set an MLS record in a 2-1 home win over Nashville. Inter Miami is now 11-3-5 and fifth in the East but with three fewer games played than the top five. Miami is unbeaten since losing in the FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 to Paris Saint-Germain. next: Team Messi has three more MLS matches starting Wednesday at Cincinnati before a schedule pause to begin Leagues Cup play July 30 vs. Mexican club Atlas. 2. SOCCER: Club World Cup gets mammoth final in PSG, Chelsea: The FIFA Club World Cup's debut as a major 32-team event across the U.S. had its negatives -- notably slashed ticket prices to combat lousy crowds for some matches. But can't argue the bottom line: A bona fide, world-class championship match in favored reigning European king Paris Saint-Germain vs. English power Chelsea. PSG throttled Real Madrid in the semis 4-0 while Chelsea handled Brazil's Fluminense 2-nil, creating a Sunday title match at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium that looks a jewel of a finish. 3. MLB: Now it gets good with Draft, Derby and All-Star Game: With due respect nobody cares about the Futures Game or the dumb Celebrity Softball. But now All-Star Week revs up with the MLB Draft starting Sunday, the Home Run Derby Monday and the ASG itself Tuesday. Sometimes the longball contest steals the spotlight but it-guy slugger Cal Raleigh tops a Derby rather low-watt overall for starpower. For me the All-Star Game shines brighter brighter this year with Shoehei Ohtani and Aaron Judge out front. 4. HEAT: Powell a major add; rookie Jakucionis shines in debut: Miami trading for 21-point scorer Norman Powell from the Clippers while also divesting of dead wood Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love was a win-win for Pat Riley and the Heat in Miami's biggest move of a quiet offseason. Meanwhile Heat's top draft pick Kasparas Jakucionis debuted with 24 points in a loss to Atlanta to open NBA Summer League play in Las Vegas. Heat's back on the summer wood tonight vs. Cleveland. 5. TENNIS: Iga Swiatek wins Wimbledon; Sinner-Alcaraz go today: No. 8-seed Iga Swiatek easily made Wimbledon her sixth career major win Saturday, beating 13th-ranked American Amanda Anisimova from Aventura (near Miami), 6-0, 6-0 -- the tourney's first finals shutout since 1911. Today/Sunday it's No. 1 Jannik Sinner vs. No. 2 Carlos Alvarez in a heavyweight men's final as the U.S. extends its drought of no men's Wimbledon winner since Pete Sampras in 2000 -- though fifth-seed Taylor Fritz gave it a run to the semis. Sinner has three career majors including Wimbledon last year; Alcaraz has five including the recent French Open. 6. MARLINS: Throwin' Junk! Fish ride upswing into All-Star break: Marlins enter All-Star break on a 13-6 run that has lifted them from the NL East cellar to third place after Saturday's 6-0 win in Baltimore on a gem by impossibly named pitcher Janson Junk. Recent upswing included an 11-game road win streak. Low-payroll Miami still is a longshot to get into the wild-card playoff hunt as the July 31 trade deadline nears. Meanwhile the Marlins have the No. 7 overall pick in MLB Draft starting today and seem set on a shortstop. Mark the names Billy Carlson, Eli Willits and JoJo Parker, all straight outta high school at that position. 7. WNBA: Unrivaled league returning to Miami ... but what about WNBA?: Unrivaled the offseason 3-on-3 league made up of WNBA stars, is planning for Year II and keeping Miami as its home base, though it will venture out at least a couple of times to bigger arenas in non-WNBA cities. Now when will the WNBA itself come back to South Florida? The league just announced it will grow to 18 teams by adding Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in '29 and Philadelphia in '30 after first expanding to Portland and Toronto. So where's Miami? The Miami Sol was an early WNBA team in 2000-02. It's past time for Miami 2.0. 8. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: What is wrong with Deion Sanders?: Even celebrities have a right to privacy, and Colorado coach Deion Sanders is exercising his by declining to reveal his current health issue that saw him missing much of the summer away from his team and appearing noticeably thinner at Big 12 media day. Sanders has dealt with persistent health issues with his left food and blood clots, including the amputation of two toes in 2021. In a recent podcast appearance he admitted his current situation is 'at a whole other level.' Sanders is easy to dislike with a persona bordering on arrogance, but we wish him well in whatever he is battling. 9. MEDIA: Panthers a 'Team of Year' finalist at ESPY Awards: ESPN's masterwork in self-promotion marks its 33rd annual ESPY Awards this Wednesday in L.A., with comedian Shane Gillis hosting. Slim pickin's for Miami-area finalists, with only the Florida Panthers for Team of the Year and Coco Gauff for Best Tennis Player repping South Florida among the 19 major categories open for public voting. I'd call both longshots, though a back-to-back Stanley Cup winner is obviously deserving. SoFla last had an ESPY Team of the Year when the Big 3-era Miami Heat won it in 2012 and again in '13. 10. DOLPHINS: Farewell Ndamukong Suh upon his official retirement: Suh was a pretty great NFL defensive tackle for five teams including the Miami Dolphins in 2015-17 in the heart of his career. He last played in 2022 but made his retirement official this week at age 38. Not saying he's a certain Hall of Famer like Aaron Donald, but Suh, with five Pro Bowls (including '16 as a Dolphin) and three times a first-team All-Pro, deserves strong consideration from Canton. THE LIST: All-time homer-leaders in MLB Home Run Derby: The top five sluggers (plus ties) in history of MLB Home Run Derby, which sees its 39th edition Monday in Atlanta: Number Player, Team Years 207 Pete Alonso, Mets 2019, 2021-24 163 Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays 2019, '23 142 Julio Rodriguez, Mariners 2022-23 106 Albert Pujols, Cardinals/Angels 2003, '07, '09, '15, '22 99 Joc Pederson, Dodgers 2015, '19 99 Juan Soto, Nationals 2021-22 Notes: Giancarlo Stanton is 8th all-time with 83 homers, all with the Marlins in 2014 and '16-17. Braves' Matt Olson is only one of eight 2025 entrants who has appeared in HRD before, hitting 23 homers while with A's in 2021. Nationals Select First in 2025 MLB Draft; How Last 10 No. 1 Picks Have Fared
The Washington Nationals, who are more than halfway through their sixth consecutive losing season since winning the 2019 World Series, have the No. 1 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday evening. After firing both their general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez a week ago, it's unclear who the Nationals will take with the first overall pick. Will it be infielder Ethan Holliday, the youngest son of former MLB star Matt Holliday? Could LSU left-hander and national champion Kade Anderson hear his name called? One way or another, the draft is an inexact science — furthered by the implementation of the MLB Draft Lottery in 2022 — with 20 rounds and players sometimes being traded before they even reach the big leagues. That said, here's how each of the last 10 No. 1 picks has fared. IF Travis Bazzana, Cleveland Guardians (2024) Bazzana flaunted power and speed while playing multiple positions at Oregon State, but he has primarily played second base in Cleveland's minor-league ranks. To date, Bazzana hasn't reached the big leagues but has risen to the organization's Double-A Akron affiliate. RHP Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates (2023) Skenes has been sensational. Making his MLB debut just 10 months after being drafted out of LSU, the hard-throwing right-hander instantly became an elite force. Skenes has pitched deep into games, kept runners off the basepaths at an elite clip and posted strikeouts at a high rate while throwing as many as seven pitches, but primarily a four-seamer, split-fingered fastball and sweeper. The starter for the National League in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, Skenes has a career 1.98 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 301 strikeouts over his first 43 MLB starts (254 innings pitched). IF Jackson Holliday, Baltimore Orioles (2022) "No … there is another" is what the baseball world was told after Holliday, the older son of seven-time All-Star and World Series champion Matt Holliday, was selected with the foresight of his younger brother, Ethan, on the horizon. Selected out of high school, Jackson Holliday reached the big leagues in 2024 but struggled to the tune of a .189 batting average. In his first full season at the MLB level in 2025, Holliday has flaunted some power from the left side while holding his own as Baltimore's everyday second baseman. C Henry Davis, Pittsburgh Pirates (2021) This is a unique one, as Skenes and Davis became the first battery of former No. 1 picks to start a game together earlier this season. As for the backstop, Davis reached the big leagues in 2023 but has been up and down from the MLB roster, appearing in a combined 144 games. Across his 44 appearances behind the plate for the Pirates this season, Davis has posted 1 DRS. For what it's worth, across Davis' combined minor-league career, the former Louisville backstop has raked, boasting a career .529 slugging percentage. IF Spencer Torkelson, Detroit Tigers (2020) Torkelson was called up to the Tigers during the 2022 season, and it has been a seesaw ride, but the potential is apparent. Drafted as a third baseman, Torkelson has exclusively played first base at the big-league level. At the plate, the powerful right-handed hitter blasted 31 home runs in 2023 and has hit 21 long balls this season, while boasting a career-high .494 slugging percentage. Torkelson, an Arizona State product, is among the faces of a Tigers team that owns the best record in MLB this season (59-37). C Adley Rutschman, Baltimore Orioles (2019) Another Oregon State star drafted with the No. 1 pick, Rutschman hit the ground running with the Orioles in 2022, quickly becoming one of the stars of the team. The switch-hitting catcher has considerable power, moves well on the basepaths and has been one of the best all-around backstops in the sport over his three-plus years on the scene. A two-time All-Star and 2023 Silver Slugger Award winner, Rutschman was the runner-up for the 2022 American League Rookie of the Year Award. He averaged 20 home runs and 80 RBIs per season from 2023-24. RHP Casey Mize, Detroit Tigers (2018) Like his Tigers teammate and previously mentioned No. 1 pick Torkelson, Mize has endured a roller-coaster career but one that has made a turn for the better. After making seven starts in 2020, the right-hander posted a plausible 3.71 ERA over 30 starts in 2021. However, Mize then required Tommy John surgery two starts into the ensuing year and missed the rest of 2022 and all of 2023 due to recovery from the elbow injury. In 2024, Mize made 22 appearances (20 starts) and is now pitching at an All-Star level. Through his first 16 starts of 2025, the Auburn product has recorded a 3.15 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 88.2 innings. Moreover, Mize has been able to effectively maintain a five-pitch arsenal: four-seamer, split-fingered fastball, slurve, slider and sinker. IF Royce Lewis, Minnesota Twins (2017) Lewis brings the power. Since arriving in 2022, he has hit for power and with efficiency. The issue for Lewis, who was selected out of high school, has been injuries, specifically his knee and hamstring, which have limited him to a combined 193 games. When healthy, Lewis is a force to be reckoned with. While flashing leather at the hot corner, Lewis averaged 16 home runs, 50 RBIs and a .493 slugging percentage across 70 games per season from 2023-24 and cranked four home runs for Minnesota in the 2023 postseason. OF Mickey Moniak, Philadelphia Phillies (2016) Moniak's MLB career has been an adventure. After receiving minimal playing time with the Phillies from 2020-22, Moniak was traded midseason to the Los Angeles Angels, with whom he didn't become a full-time starter until 2023. In said season, Moniak was limited to 85 games but still managed to total 14 home runs, 45 RBIs and a .495 slugging percentage. Following a tedious 2024 campaign, the Angels released Moniak in spring training, and he signed with the Colorado Rockies, with whom the outfielder is in the midst of a career year. Across 78 games, Moniak has totaled 13 home runs and 32 RBIs while owning a .256/.303/.520 slash line. While strikeouts have been an issue, Moniak has shown signs of promise in the form of his power and has started at all three outfield positions throughout his career. IF Dansby Swanson, Arizona Diamondbacks (2015) The Diamondbacks drafted Swanson first overall, but he was sent to the Atlanta Braves five months later as part of a blockbuster trade that sent right-handed pitcher and 2015 All-Star Shelby Miller to Arizona. The deal worked out quite well for the Braves, as Swanson, who first debuted in 2016, became one of the best shortstops in the sport. While it took some time for the power to come along, the Vanderbilt star was stellar at the middle-infield position and averaged 26 home runs and 92 RBIs per season from 2021-22. Swanson earned one Gold Glove and one All-Star nod with the Braves, with whom he won the 2021 World Series, before joining the Chicago Cubs after the 2022 season. Yankees vs. Cubs prediction: MLB Sunday player props, picks, odds
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. Paul Goldschmidt is looking to finish his first half on a high note on Sunday. The former National League MVP has been terrific in his first half-season with the Yankees, and he could be in line for a big game against the Cubs on Sunday. Chicago will send Shota Imanaga to the mound as they head into the MLB All-Star break. If their past match-ups are any indication, Goldschmidt sees Imanaga well. In seven plate appearances against Imanaga last season, Goldschmidt had three hits, including a home run and a double on Aug. 1. Goldschmidt comes into the game on a heater, slashing .361/.378/.556 with seven doubles in 37 plate appearances in July. As he's done his entire career, Goldschmidt is smashing southpaw pitchers this season. In 104 plate appearances against lefties, Goldschmidt is hitting .416/.500/.719 with five homers. New York Yankees first base Paul Goldschmidt (48) doubles during the sixth inning when the New York Yankees played the Chicago Cubs Friday, July 11, 2025 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY. Robert Sabo for NY Post His .416 average leads all hitters with at least 100 plate appearances against left-handers, and his 1.219 on-base plus slugging is the second-highest behind Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. Unsurprisingly, Imanaga is much worse when he doesn't have the platoon advantage. Imanaga has allowed nine of his 10 home runs and 16 of his 20 extra-base hits to right-handed batters this season. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting Righties are slugging .426 against him versus just .236 for lefties. I'm betting Goldschmidt to head into the All-Star break on a good note.
