Tigers get 10th-inning homers from Sweeney and Greene and extend Guardians' skid to 10 with 7-2 win

CLEVELAND (AP) — Trey Sweeney and Riley Greene homered during a six-run 10th inning on Sunday as the Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland 7-2, extending the Guardians' losing streak to 10 games.
Javier Báez had two hits and Tarik Skubal struck out 10 as the AL-best Tigers swept the three-game series.
Cleveland was one strike away from ending its skid when closer Emmanuel Clase threw a wild pitch, allowing pinch-runner Zach McKinstry to score the tying run with two outs in the ninth.
The Guardians' double-digit streak is the 11th in team history and the first since Cleveland dropped 11 in a row in 2012. The franchise record is 12 in 1931.
Cleveland's Steven Kwan had three hits, including an RBI double in the eighth.
Báez singled leading off the 10th with automatic runner Parker Meadows aboard and Sweeney followed with a three-run drive down the left-field line off Cade Smith (2-3) for a 4-1 lead.
Skubal — the reigning AL Cy Young winner and possible starter in next week's All-Star Game — allowed three hits in seven innings. It was his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season and 13th of his career.
Chase Lee (4-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Cleveland's Gavin Williams allowed one hit in six innings and struck out eight.

Luke Kornet had a perfect (pandering) reason for choosing Spurs' No. 7 jersey

The San Antonio Spurs are forming quite a formidable frontcourt. Former No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama is on track to become the player he was billed to be, earning All-Star honors for the first time in 2025 despite being shut down in February due to blood clots. Now, San Antonio is adding a solid role player in center Luke Kornet, who agreed to a four-year, $41 million contract with the Spurs at the start of the free agency period last week. The 29-year-old former NBA champion with the Boston Celtics averaged six points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists (the latter two marks being career-highs) while starting 16 games and appearing in 73. Kornet's 18.6 minutes per game with the Celtics in 2024-25 was also the most in his career. Kornet was formally introduced as a member of the Spurs on Monday, and he didn't take long to attempt to ingratiate himself with the fanbase. Asked why he's choosing to wear No. 7, Kornet gave a perfect (if slightly pandering) answer. He said he would like to be at least a third as good as Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, who played his entire 19-year career with the Spurs and wore No. 21. Kornet also added that he "loves multiples and factors," according to Nate Ryan of KENS in San Antonio. Kornet certainly knows how to tug at the heartstrings of Spurs fans, but the former undrafted player in 2017 will also hope to impress them with his play on the court after turning in what was arguably the most productive season of his eight-year career. The Spurs are coming off six-straight losing seasons, though their 34-48 finish last season was a 12-game improvement from its 22-60 records in the prior two campaigns. San Antonio hasn't reached the postseason since 2019, but with Kornet joining a young core that includes Wembanyama, last season's Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, it hopes to change that in 2025-26.

Michael Jordan's Son Sends Quiet Message to LeBron James on Saturday

Michael Jordan's Son Sends Quiet Message to LeBron James on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The debate over who's the greatest basketball player of all time never seems to end. Whether it's LeBron James, Michael Jordan or someone else entirely, fans stay passionate and divided. Advertisement Even so, there appears to be mutual respect between the Jordan and James camps. That respect showed up again this weekend when LeBron posted a video of himself golfing. The caption read: 'Day 2 of officially trying this ⛳️🏌🏾 out! Boy o boy it's a mind [expletive] to say the least! But I think I enjoy that part of it a lot!' James, approaching his 41st birthday in December, looked a little raw on the course. Still, Michael Jordan's eldest son, Jeffrey Jordan, seemed to give him credit, posting four clapping emojis in the replies. While it wasn't a loud endorsement, fans noticed the acknowledgment, which felt like a quiet nod of approval from the Jordan side. Advertisement LeBron James, InstagramLeBron James, Instagram LeBron has been in the NBA since 2003, when he was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He's also played for the Miami Heat and currently stars for the Los Angeles Lakers. There's been plenty of speculation about James possibly switching teams for one last championship run before he retires. If LeBron suits up for the 2025-26 season, he'll break Vince Carter's record for most seasons played in the NBA. He's already passed the all-time record for minutes played and continues to extend it. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23)Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Over his career, James has been selected to 21 All-Star games, won four NBA titles and earned three Olympic gold medals. Advertisement Michael Jordan retired for the third and final time in 2003 as a member of the Washington Wizards. He won six NBA titles and five MVP awards with the Chicago Bulls from 1984-93 and 1995-98, also appearing in 14 All-Star games. Jordan finished his career with 32,292 points and won two Olympic gold medals, in 1984 and 1992. The debate between James and Jordan supporters will never stop, but moments like this show that even amid the rivalry, there's still room for mutual respect. USA TODAY Sports ranks top college football QBs entering 2025: Where is Cade Klubnik?

As is the case every year, the 2025 college football season will feature no shortage of elite quarterbacks who could end up vying for the Heisman Trophy. The quarterback position is responsible for all but two Heisman Trophy winners since 2016, and 2025 could see another gunslinger added to the list after Travis Hunter, Colorado's exceptional two-way standout at wide receiver and defensive back, took home the award last year. Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik, Penn State's Drew Allar, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers are among the top returning starters for 2025. There's also Texas' Arch Manning, set to begin his first season as the Longhorns' starter after two seasons behind Quinn Ewers. On Monday, a panel of USA TODAY Sports college football experts unveiled their rankings of the top 25 college quarterbacks heading into the 2025 season by aggregate ballot. The five-member panel of Paul Myerberg, Erick Smith, Eddie Timanus, Jordan Mendoza and Blake Toppmeyer gave Klubnik the edge as the No. 1 quarterback in the nation entering 2025 over Allar and Manning. The panel concluded: "In his second season at the controls, Klubnik's progress from his first year restored the explosiveness to the Clemson offense that had been missing since the Tigers were playing for national championships. Now with even more weapons at his disposal, he should be front and center in the Heisman discussion as the team makes another title push." Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2024 while leading a resurgent Clemson program to its ninth ACC championship under coach Dabo Swinney. Under the new 12-team postseason format, the Tigers also made the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2020. While no Clemson player has ever won the Heisman Trophy, Klubnik could change that in 2025. Clemson football schedule 2025 Clemson will open the 2025 season against the LSU Tigers at Memorial Stadium in prime time on Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC. Here's the rest of the 2025 Clemson schedule with announced start times. All times Eastern.
