Drink-drive deaths up 7% in a decade
Department for Transport statistics reveal an estimated 260 people died in crashes in 2023 in which a driver was over the alcohol limit.
That represented a 14% reduction on the previous 12 months, but a 7% increase from 2013.
Some 16% of road deaths in 2023 involved drink-driving.
Nicholas Lyes, director of policy and standards at road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, said: 'Drink-driving can have devastating consequences.
'While the latest drink-drive related fatality figures have declined on the previous year, the trend over the past decade is troubling and shows that we are stuck in a dangerous rut.
'We must redouble our efforts on enforcement, providing the police with the necessary tools to clamp down on drink-drivers while reviewing our approach to both first time and repeat offenders.'
The drink-drive limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.
Nowhere else in Europe has a limit above 50mg/100ml.
The Scottish Government reduced its limit to that level in 2014.
Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency statistics previously obtained by the PA news agency revealed 27,837 British motorists were convicted of drink-driving multiple times in the 11 years to July 20 2024.

Police link 'brutal' bottle attack on priest to man found dead in same town
A man has been found dead hours after a priest was attacked with a bottle as he was about to conduct mass. Father John Murray was preparing a service at St Patrick's Church in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland when he was assaulted in the place of worship. The man entered church at around 10am this morning and attacked the priest with a glass bottle before leaving straight away. He was taken to hospital for treatment for his head injury where he remains in a serious condition, police have said. Hours later, a murder inquiry was launched after reports that a man had died around midday. Officers have since arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder andbelieve the two incidents may be interlinked. Superintendent Norman Haslett said: 'Enquiries are at an early stage and, at this time, we suspect this may be connected to a serious assault in the St Patrick's Avenue area of Downpatrick on Sunday.' Speaking after the attack on Father Murray, DCI McBurney said: 'This was a completely shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury. 'Our enquiries are ongoing into this incident, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault, or has any information to contact Police on 101 and quoting reference 543 of 10/08/25.' Downpatrick Family of Parishes said in a statement: 'Parishioners will be aware of an incident in St Patrick's Church earlier today. 'Fr Murray is currently receiving medical treatment. We thank you for your prayers and well wishes.' Chris Hazzard, the Sinn Fein MP for South Down condemned what he called a 'cowardly' act. He wrote on Facebook: 'I was shocked and saddened to hear the news from Downpatrick this morning that Father Murray was attacked in St Patrick's Church. 'My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery.' Northern Ireland Assembly member Cathy Mason said she was 'horrified' to hear of the attack. 'The attack on Father Murray in St Patrick's Church, Downpatrick, this morning is deeply shocking', she wrote online. Family ‘terrified' after killer escapes prison for second time
A manhunt has been launched after a man who set fire to a grandmother in her bed escaped prison for a second time. Vincent Lee has been on the run for more than 72 hours after he failed to return to the open prison where he was serving life for killing Ann Worrell, 43. He was found to have set her unconscious body alight on her bed in Galon Uchaf, Merthyr Tydfil in June 1986, and was handed a life imprisonment at Swansea Crown Court in April 1987. Police have now launched an appeal after the murderer failed to return to HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire following a period of temporary release on licence. Lee, 67, had previously absconded from prison seven years ago. His victim's daughter Mandy, expressed her disgust that her mother's killer is at large again. She wrote: 'Just been informed that the monster that murdered my mother has once again gone on the run from day release yesterday. 'Been advised to phone 999 if he's spotted anywhere. He's a danger to society. If seen contact the police immediately.' The grief-stricken mother said that Lee's escape had 'torn apart' her family. 'It's terrifying for us knowing that he is still on the run somewhere', she told Wales Online. Lee is described as white and 5ft 5ins tall and with bald hair. He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, grey Nike tracksuit bottoms, black boots and blue and black glasses. Newspaper reports at the time suggest considered Ann was his mother, and grandmother to his son. Benidorm holidaymakers say 'its gone so downhill' as crime warning given
Benidorm attracts millions of tourists every year for its sandy beaches, warm climate and vibrant nightlife. One man who visited the Spanish coastal town for a holiday has given a warning to others. Benidorm is a popular holiday destination for many Brits who flock to the resort's sandy beaches to enjoy the lively nightlife and reasonable prices. The Spanish hotspot attracts millions of tourists every year who expect to have a fun time exploring the party scene but one visitor has shared his unpleasant experience. Frank the Stag Man, known for hosting numerous stag and hen parties in Benidorm, shared a clip on TikTok speaking to a British man who had 'not your normal night out in Benidorm.' The tourist, from Scarborough, told Frank that he was alone on the Benidorm Strip, a popular nightlife destination packed with bars, pubs and nightclubs, when he passed out and had his belongings stolen, including his wallet and phone. The man believed that he had been spiked, sharing that he had been spiked before so he knows the feeling. Spiking is a criminal offence that involves giving someone drugs or alcohol without them knowing or agreeing, like in their drink or with a needle. The Scarborough holiday-maker added that he woke up on a park bench and two Spanish police officers told him to leave and he managed to get back to his hotel at 8am after asking local residents how to get back as he was lost. He said that his wallet, cards and money were all stolen, as well as his phone, e-cigarette and even his glasses. The tourist believes the thieves knew he was on his own 'or they wouldn't have done it.' His theory is that they must have seen that he was alone in a bar and decided to spike his drink. Giving more details on the alleged spiking, the tourist shared that when he had been spiked in the past his eyes became swollen and he noticed this happened again during this incident. According to the symptoms of spiking vary depending on what someone has spiked you with but the organisation adds that the signs can be similar to having excess alcohol. Frank, who is originally from Tottenham but moved to the coastal Spanish town a long time ago, asked the man what advice he would give to other people coming for a holiday in Benidorm. The tourist replied: 'Don't stay out on your own, never. Make sure you're out with your mates.' He shared that the only reason he stayed out was because he wanted to carry on partying but his friends wanted to leave so he was then on his own. Frank also gave a warning to tourists in the caption of his TikTok video: 'BE AWARE IN BENIDORM. THIS IS REAL and I hear it a lot.' The post has racked up 1.6 million views, 19,000 likes and more than 1,000 comments. One user suggested: 'On a holiday like that you go out with just your money for the night.' Another said: 'I've been hearing loads of these stories about Benidorm. It's gone so downhill lately.' A third commented: 'I'm going on my own in August as a solo traveller. I'll be bringing my drink to the toilet with me. Thanks for the heads up.' Despite the warning, other holidaymakers who have been to Benidorm said they had a great time and no issues. One person wrote: "I've went out in Benidorm myself loads of times with zero issues," while another added: "Benidorm is a great place." A third chimed in: "I've been going Benidorm for 40 years and never had any issues, there's good and bad everywhere."
