RM7 million allocated for drought mitigation in Malaysia's rice granaries
BAGAN SERAI: The government has allocated RM7 million for infrastructure upgrades to minimise drought impact on key rice production areas of Malaysia.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops.
'It is mainly to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to the paddy plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual.
'This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during drought seasons,' he said after officiating the 2025 Perak State-Level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin, here, today.
Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement, indicating that six areas in Peninsular Malaysia are now at Level 1 (alert) for three consecutive days, due to ongoing hot weather.
The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, and Bandar Baharu in Kedah.
In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to combat cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security.
He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments.
'Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between state and federal governments is essential, to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' he said.
He added that one of the main factors contributing to smuggling activities, particularly during festive seasons, is the high demand for beef, coupled with the sector's self-sufficiency level (SSL) still falling short of the targeted benchmark.

Ewon, who serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Committee Meetings,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall, here. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the Special Intervention Meetings, which began earlier this year, have shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described the decline as a positive development resulting from collaboration among various parties. 'We have proposed several steps to the technical departments and project-owning ministries to ensure that emerging issues are discussed and resolved promptly. I also hope that the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to increase at the upcoming meetings,' he said. He expressed appreciation to all ministries, the State Government and the technical departments that have successfully expedited the processes of procurement, contractor appointments and tenders for previously uninitiated projects. Public warned of heatstroke as hot spell continues
KUALA LUMPUR: The recent extreme heat affecting several districts in Malaysia is due to the Southwest Monsoon, which typically brings less rainfall nationwide and leads to higher temperatures during dry periods. Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the hot conditions are expected to continue until September. However, he said temperatures are likely to return to normal in the coming days as more areas are forecast to receive rain in the early mornings and late afternoons. "The country is currently experiencing the Southwest Monsoon, during which rainfall generally decreases across most areas. "However, thunderstorms and heavy rain may still occur from time to time, especially in the western peninsula, northern Sarawak and western Sabah in the morning, and inland areas in the evening or at night," he said. He was responding to recent reports which said six districts — Bandar Baharu (Kedah), Larut, Matang, Kuala Kangsar and Perak Tengah (Perak), as well as Machang and Kuala Krai (Kelantan) — recorded daily maximum temperatures of 35°C to 37°C for three consecutive days. These areas have been classified under Level 1 (Alert). The situation has raised concerns among public health experts and residents. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Professor Dr Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh warned that heatstroke could be fatal, particularly for the elderly, children, pregnant women and those who are obese. In Kampung Labok, Machang, resident Syahman Kamaruddin, 44, said his family had to bathe several times a day, even at night, due to the heat. He also reported murky tap water in the area Mohd Hisham advised the public to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor activity to reduce health risks. "Open burning should also be avoided, as it can contribute to haze and environmental pollution.
