Automobile companies posted muted revenue and operating profit growth in Q1 FY26, with margins under pressure. However, OEMs remain optimistic, citing long-term growth drivers such as India's expanding road network, policy support for supply chains, the vehicle scrappage policy, lower interest costs, and continued infrastructure capex.
Axis Securities is selective in its outlook. Its top conviction ideas include Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto in two-wheelers, Ashok Leyland in commercial vehicles, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) in passenger vehicles and tractors, supported by its strong SUV portfolio and tractor leadership. The brokerage also suggests a 'Buy on Dips' strategy for TVS Motor Company and Maruti Suzuki India.
In auto ancillaries, Axis Securities' top pick is Sansera Engineering, while recommending 'Buy on Dips' for Endurance Technologies and UNO Minda for long-term gains.
'In the long run, product premiumization, strong order books, growing exports, GST rate cut and the shift toward EVs are expected to drive higher content per vehicle, boosting profitability,' Axis Securities said.
Here are Axis Securities' top auto stock pics:
Hero MotoCorp's global business grew 27% YoY in Q1FY26, continuing the strong momentum seen in FY25. With a focus on 10–12 strategic markets, the company is introducing localised, premium-oriented products to drive market share gains. Hero MotoCorp targets scaling its global operations to contribute ~10% of overall revenue and volumes, positioning exports as a critical growth and diversification lever over the medium term, Axis Securities said.
The brokerage firm has a 'Buy' call on Hero MotoCorp shares with a target price of ₹ 5,220 apiece.
Bajaj Auto's management guides for 15%–20% QoQ export growth in FY26, supported by strong demand, market recovery, and product mix improvement. Bajaj Auto's EV portfolio is now at high single-digit EBITDA margins, a sharp reversal from red territory in FY24. The company has thus cemented the pole position at 31% in e-2W vehicles.
According to the brokerage house, the short-term supply bottlenecks are likely priced in, but structural cost leadership and product acceptance offer a high-ROI EV optionality. It has a 'Buy' rating on Bajaj Auto shares for target price of ₹ 9,360.
Ashok Leyland's power solutions segment posted a 28.5% YoY revenue increase, diversifying income streams and enhancing margin stability. The company's capacity expansion is also targeted and demand-driven, Axis Securities noted.
It recommends buying Ashok Leyland shares for a target price of ₹ 135 apiece.
Sansera Engineering's initiatives focused on optimising manpower and capacity utilisation are further contributing to performance. US tariff impacts have so far been passed through to most customers, limiting downside risk, said the brokerage firm.
Axis Securities has a 'Buy' call on Sansera Engineering shares for a target price of ₹ 1,500 apiece.

GST Slabs Changed: GoM accepts Centre's proposal of two-slab GST of 5, 18%

BIG changes in GST rules! Key panel accepts Centre's proposal – Details The final decision on these recommendations will be taken by the GST Council in its next meeting scheduled in September. Advertisement The Group of Ministers (GoM) on GST rate rationalisation on Thursday endorsed the Centre's proposal to shift to a two-slab structure of 5% and 18%. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who heads the six-member panel, said the GoM has also agreed to do away with the existing 12% and 28% slabs. Advertisement === Only 2 Slabs Of GST: 5% And 18% 'Both the proposals of the Centre have been accepted by the GoM on rate rationalisation,' Choudhary told reporters after the meeting of the panel. Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said the Centre's proposal also includes levying 40 per cent tax on ultra luxury and sin goods. Add as a Preferred Source Bhattacharya said the Centre's proposal did not mention the revenue loss that would accrue to the Centre and states after the implementation of the new GST slabs. At present, Goods and Services Tax is a 4-tier structure of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. While food items are either taxed at 0 or 5 per cent, luxury and sin goods are taxed at 28 per cent. On top of the 28 per cent slab, cess at varied rates is levied on demerit and luxury goods, like cars. PM Modi On GST Reforms In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced restructuring aimed at rationalising the existing GST structure, which currently includes multiple tax slabs per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent, and 28 per cent. The move to eliminate the 12 per cent and 28 per cent brackets is being seen as part of a broader effort to simplify the indirect tax regime and reduce classification disputes. The final decision now rests with the GST Council, which will consider the recommendations and feedback from various states before implementing any changes. Story Highlights What Is GST Reforms? HUL, ITC to Dabur — Here are 3 key factors driving the FMCG stocks: Should you buy or sell?

HUL, ITC, Dabur, and other consumer stocks have been in focus recently. The share prices of Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and Godrej Consumer Products Limited are up almost 6.5% in the ongoing week. Dabur India and Marico share prices are also up between 4-5%. The key factors driving FMCG stocks include demand improvement and a good monsoon. While analysts expect raw material prices to decline and see some calculated price hikes, which is positive for the margins that remained subdued in Q1, the recovery is being watched for. Over the past three years, consumption has been hit by high inflation, rising interest rates, and a lack of government programs. The recent initiatives, such as the attempts at rationalisation of the Goods and Services Tax, declining interest rates, and cooling inflation, are expected to be favourable, as per analysts. The Q1 results season too has been encouraging, with the earnings recovery in the coming quarters keenly eyed. The demand recovery that was seen in the April to June quarter continues. Based on recent interactions with distributors and dealers, analysts feel that demand in the mass urban space improved, though marginally, in July 2025. As per Antiques Stock Broking, Nestle distributors reported a minor rebound in the milk and nutrition business, with strong growth in beverages, chocolates, and instant noodles. Meanwhile, ITC witnessed a healthy cigarette consumption rate. Antique analysts believe Hindustan Unilever is experiencing a sequential recovery with broad traction across categories. Marico's price increase in Parachute had a minor impact on product sales in July but is expected to normalise in the future, as per analysts. They believe Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) saw a healthy increase in household insecticide use due to mosquito infestation. Antique Stock Broking prefers Godrej Consumer Products, or GCPL, and Marico in the consumer staples. The government aims to revive consumption, with many efforts in place. We believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to rationalise GST rates and simplify the rate structure on August 15th, 2025, will boost consumption, said analysts at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Rural markets' performance as per MOFSL has been an outlier for the last 12 months after witnessing a tepid performance during 2022-2023. Price increases helped drive growth in Q1 FY126 as rural communities remained resilient, said analysts. Axis Securities pointed out that the urban weakness persists, but recovery is on the horizon. Higher raw material prices have put pressure on gross margins in staple companies, affecting overall performance, said the brokerage. However, Axis Securities added that in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, the FMCG sector stands out for delivering best-in-class return ratios such as ROCE, ROE, and dividend yield, ensuring long-term capital protection. Its top picks include Varun Beverages and DOMS Industries. We noted a relatively better revenue print and commentary from staple companies in 1QFY26, said Motilal Oswal Financial Services. It continues to like HUL, GCPL, and Marico from the staple universe.

GST Reforms: GoM supports two-slab structure, but flags the need to address revenue loss

NEW DELHI: In a significant move in the process of further simplifying India's tax framework, the Group of Ministers (GoM) has reportedly given its consent for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalisation. All the ministers of the participating states at the GoM meeting held on Thursday have accepted the Centre's proposal to eliminate the 12% and 28% tax slabs—and introduce the two-slab structure of 5% and 18% GST. Chandrima Bhattacharya, Finance Minister, West Bengal confirmed to media after the GoM meeting that all the states are in favour of centre's proposal as this is a 'people friendly' decision. States have asked for an estimate on revenue loss. Proposal will be put up before next GST council meeting. "All the states are pro people, there is no doubt about it. They (two-slab rate) are pro people. But when the states lose their revenue that also ultimately goes back to the common people, so that has to be looked into," added Bhattacharya. Chaired by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, the six-member GoM includes finance and revenue ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Kerala. Under the Center's proposed revamp, essential and merit goods will attract a 5% GST rate, while most other goods and services will fall under the 18% standard rate. Notably, nearly 99% of items currently in the 12% bracket will come under 5%, and a large part of those under 28% will move to 18%. Suresh Kumar Khanna, Finance Minister of Uttar Pradesh, said, "40% GST on luxurious and sin goods have been proposed. But it's too early to say anything on revenue loss. " As previously proposed, for luxury and demerit, or 'sin,' goods like pan masala, tobacco products, a special 40% levy is expected to remain in place. Some states, including West Bengal, have even proposed imposing an additional duty above 40% to maintain the existing tax burden on ultra-luxury items like high-end cars. However, West Bengal has suggested a need for amendment of certain sections to ensure additional tax can be levied on sin items. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech announced GST reforms to be implemented by Diwali. Thereafter, the Finance Ministry proposed the two-slab tax structure of GST, alongside removing cess. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who addressed the GoM on Wednesday, asserted the need for the rationalisation to provide significant relief to the common man, farmers, the middle class, and MSMEs by promoting a transparent and growth-oriented tax regime. There was a two-day GoM meeting in New Delhi on August 20 and 21, to discuss GST on insurance, removal of compensation cess and rate rationalisation. The GoM on Wednesday also proposed to exempt GST on individual health and life insurance premiums—a change estimated to incur a revenue loss of Rs 9,700 crore annually. While the participating states were in favour of the suggestion, they demanded the need for mechanisms ensuring insurers pass on the benefit to policyholders and also to ensure that the revenue loss for the loss could be minimised. The GoM's recommendations will now be presented to the GST Council at its next meeting, expected in September.
