Govt clearing path for more young farmers

GOPENG: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry is intensifying efforts to attract more youth into agriculture as the country grapples with an ageing farmer population, says Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup.
Acknowledging that many farmers were now in their 60s, the Deputy Minister said the issue was not unique to Malaysia but part of a global trend.
The country is implementing targeted measures to address the issue, he added.
'We are taking proactive steps to attract more young people to take part in the agriculture sector,' he told reporters after joining Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad to close the Fama Fest 2025 at the Gopeng Rural Transformation Centre, yesterday.
Arthur was commenting on the preliminary findings from the 2024 Agriculture Census, which noted that Malaysians aged over 60 make up the largest segment of the country's farmers while around 90% of farmers had only completed their education up to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level.
The census – the first in more than two decades – aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the country's agricultural and food production landscape.
Arthur said among the key initiatives was organising programmes such as Fama Fest to create wider market access for young agropreneurs.
He said these events not only helped promote and sell agricultural products but also highlighted the sector's potential for generating lucrative income.
'We want to show that the agriculture and agri-food industry is a viable and profitable career path.
'The ministry is also advocating for a shift away from conventional farming methods to modern, technology-driven agriculture,' said Arthur.
'This includes the use of innovation in every aspect of the industry, from production to operations, and creating a broader ecosystem of employment opportunities,' he added.
Arthur said the ministry was also actively promoting agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes.
'These courses, which cover areas such as livestock, fisheries and vegetable farming, are fully funded by the government, including accommodation and daily expenses, to make them more accessible to youth.
'There is also a need for cooperation from state governments. It is important that land and financing are made available to ensure young people have the resources to grow and expand their agricultural ventures.'
Arthur said the ministry hoped that these combined efforts would revitalise the sector, ensuring food security and sustainability for the future.

Penang Offers Discount To Indian Muslims Under Home Ownership Campaign
GENERAL GEORGE TOWN, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Penang state government will offer a five percent discount to Indian Muslims for the purchase of residential and commercial units under the newly introduced MADANI Home Ownership Campaign (MOC), part of the MADANI Inclusive Property Sector Catalyst Policy. State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the discount would be available throughout the campaign period, from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, to boost the sale of such properties. 'In addition, the Penang State Housing Board has introduced a special category, Rumah MutiaraKu Type D (RMKu D), with a ceiling price of RM400,000, targeted at households earning up to RM15,000 a month. 'This category is not allowed to be sold on the open market and cannot be used to fulfil affordable housing compliance requirements,' he said during a press conference at Komtar today, alongside State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye. Sundarajoo also announced a reduction in contribution rates for developers who do not physically build RMKu Type A or B units—from RM120,000 to RM100,000 in areas under the Penang Island City Council, and from RM120,000 to RM72,500 under the Seberang Perai City Council. To ensure cash flow and timely delivery of RMKu units, Sundarajoo said the previous 20 percent open market release limit has been increased to 50 percent. However, a release fee of 10 percent of the selling price will be imposed. He added that upgrade packages for open market units will be capped at 50 percent of the base price, and such packages will not be allowed for PN1 units, to maintain transparency in compliance with the RMKu policy. Other incentives under the policy include waivers on the sale or purchase charges of RMKu A and B quotas for developers who do not meet the price-controlled unit requirements, as well as exemptions from conducting a social impact assessment report. Sundarajoo said the policy, which was approved during the state planning committee meeting No. 5/2025 on June 3, is expected to have a positive impact by boosting home ownership rates, encouraging approval of strategic new projects and fostering a more inclusive, sustainable and competitive property development ecosystem.

Former Director Charged With Improper Use Of Company Pproperty
SEREMBAN, June 5 (Bernama) -- A former company director pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to eight charges of improper use of company property, amounting to RM153,609 between 2019 and 2020. Chin Wei Choong, 42, made the plea after the charges were read out before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam. On four of the charges, he was charged as a director of Ambitious Supreme Sdn Bhd, to have used the company property, involving RM8,829; RM32,710; RM60,000; and RM7,070, without the consent or ratification of the company's general meeting to indirectly benefit him. It was for payments to several companies for work done for Tadika Universal Sdn Bhd, a company with which he had an interest, through Academy Adelphi Worldwide Hotels Sdn Bhd, between Nov 1, 2019, and Jan 10, 2020. He was also charged with four counts of committing a similar offence, involving RM10,000; RM10,000; RM15,000; and RM10,000 involving company property, to indirectly benefit him through a loan made to Tadika Universal Sdn Bhd, in which he has an interest, through Academy Adelphi Worldwide Hotels Sdn Bhd between Aug 6 and Oct 28, 2020. The offences were allegedly committed at a premises in Oakland Commerce Square here. The charges, framed under Section 218(1)(a) of the Companies Act 2016 and punishable under Section 218(2) of the same law, provide imprisonment for up to five years or a fine not exceeding RM3 million or both, if convicted. Chin was allowed bail of RM1,000 for each charge with one surety, and the court set July 31 for mention. Prosecuting officer Muhammad Akmal Azmi, from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Tan Zhi Xian represented Chin.

Melaka allocates RM700,000 for 'Bijak SPM' initiative
MELAKA: The Melaka government has allocated RM700,000 under the 2025 State Budget to implement an excellence programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates through the SPM Smart Initiative, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the implementation of the initiative involved 95 secondary schools and would benefit 12,757 SPM candidates in the state. 'The main goal of this initiative is to support schools in implementing various excellence programmes, including answering technique workshops, final preparation workshops, and the provision of SPM learning materials, to help students face the exam with greater confidence and readiness. 'We will also hold high-tech workshops to ensure students are well-prepared to face the challenges of an increasingly technology-driven world,' he told reporters here today. He said this after opening the 2024 SPM Excellent Student Appreciation Ceremony and the 2025 Melaka Bijak SPM programme, which was also attended by Deputy State Investment, Industry and TVET Development Committee chairman Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zaha According to Ab Rauf, the state government is allocating RM381,100, through the Melaka Education Trust Fund (Tapem), this year for the Bijak Sejarah dan Cemerlang SPM initiatives. He said that under the initiative, students who obtained straight A+'s would receive an incentive of RM1,000 and students who obtained straight A's would receive RM500, while students who obtained an A+ in History would receive RM200. 'This year, the state government also allocated RM200,000 for the implementation of the Free Tuition Programme for SPM and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students, especially those from the B40 group,' he said. In another development, he said that as part of efforts to expand access to education, the state government is taking steps to establish itself as the National TVET Centre, providing more opportunities for Melaka's youth to master high-tech skills aligned with current industry demands. 'Melaka currently has 61 TVET institutions offering various skills-based courses, and the confidence of foreign nations in the potential of local youth was recently demonstrated when the Chinese government offered 15 TVET scholarships to Malaysia, with five awarded to students from Melaka. 'This indirectly proves that Melaka is now ahead of other states in TVET development, convincing foreign countries to prioritise opportunities for our people,' he said.
