Mukhtar Ansari's MLA son Abbas sentenced to two-year jail in hate speech case
Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in a 2022 hate speech case by a special MP-MLA court on Saturday.
In the wake of his conviction and sentencing, the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA from the Mau Sadar seat could face disqualification from the Assembly.

According to the prosecution, during the last Assembly elections, Abbas Ansari, who was contesting as an SBSP candidate from the Mau Sadar seat, had threatened the Mau administration during a public meeting at Paharpur ground on March 3, 2022, saying he will "settle scores and teach them a lesson" after the elections.
Defence lawyer Daroga Singh told PTI videos that Ansari was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 189 (threat to cause harm to public servant), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, caste, place of birth, residence and language and spoiling the harmony), 171F (undue influence in election) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
Mr. Singh said that after hearing both sides, special MP/MLA court Judge K P Singh convicted Abbas Ansari on Saturday and sentenced him to two years each under sections 189 and 153-A, one year under section 506 and six months imprisonment under section 171-F. All the sentences will run simultaneously. Ansari has also been fined Rs 2,000.
He said that this order of the special court will now be challenged in the sessions court. At present, Abbas Ansari has got temporary bail.
Mr. Singh said that Abbas's partner, Mansoor Ansari, has also been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for conspiring. However, the court acquitted Abbas Ansari's younger brother Umar Ansari in the same case.
Under the Representation of the People Act, there is a provision to terminate the membership of the legislative house if the court sentences a member to two years or more.
Abbas Ansari became MLA for the first time in the year 2022 by winning the election from the Mau Sadar assembly seat on an SBSP ticket under the Samajwadi Party-led alliance.
SBSP is currently an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government, and the party president is a cabinet Minister in the State.
Before that, Abbas Ansari's father, politician Mukhtar Ansari, represented the Mau Sadar Assembly seat for a long time.
Mukhtar Ansari, who was incarcerated in Banda district jail, died of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh in March 2024.
A five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat, he was behind bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him.
He was sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts in Uttar Pradesh.

Huzurnagar (Suryapet): In a shocking incident, unidentified miscreants looted a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM located on Lingagiri Road in Huzurnagar town of Suryapet district. Huzurnagar CI Charamandaraju had previously warned that there are 4 SBI ATMs in Huzurnagar town, and as thefts are currently happening more frequently, they should be closed at night or a security guard should be appointed in addition to installing CCTV cameras. On the orders of the CI, SI Muthaiah held a meeting with the officials of all the banks operating ATMs on May 27, notably only four days ago, and gave advance warnings and instructions. However, it is learnt that this incident took place due to the negligence of the bank officials.

Delhi: 18 years on the run: Fake ‘Army officer' hiding in Punjab old age home finally caught
On the run for 18 years, a 77-year-old man was arrested for allegedly duping people by posing as a colonel in the Army and offering them real estate under a fake Army Welfare Housing Scheme (AWS), the Delhi Police said. The accused, Sitaram Singla, who has an MA in History and Economics from Panjab University, was hiding in an old age home in Patiala since 2007 when he jumped bail. On Saturday, a Crime Branch team received a tip-off about his whereabouts. 'The information revealed that the accused is a resident of Mansa, Punjab. After jumping bail, he is presently living in an old-age home in Patiala, Punjab. The team of ARSC Crime Branch reached the spot and arrested the accused,' DCP (Crime Branch) Apoorva Gupta said. Police said Singla was arrested in 2007 after a complaint was filed at Vivek Vihar police station by a bank employee, Anil Nigam; he claimed Singla duped him of Rs 56,000. 'The accused offered a flat to the complainant, which he said was be built by the Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO) under a fictitious scheme, and also offered to book a shop under it. He took Rs 56,000 as earnest money and handed over two receipts to the complainant,' DCP Gupta said. Singla was arrested and got bail the same year, police said. But he failed to appear in court and had been on the run ever since, police said. On April 26, 2025, he was declared a proclaimed offender by the Karkardooma court. Born in Sirsa in 1948, Singla came to Delhi in 1987. 'He started working as a contractor in the Indian Army and supplied oil to various cantonment areas all over India. During his work, he gained knowledge about various ranks of Army Officers and learned about the recruitment process,' DCP Gupta said. Armed with insider knowledge, Singla then allegedly started posing as a colonel and duping people on the pretext of getting them discounted real estate and jobs using AWHO. Police said Singla cut off all contact with family to stay under the radar while on the run. He has two sons; his wife passed away a few years ago. 'He was found involved in three cases of cheating and forgery at Shakarpur police station and the Crime Branch,' the DCP said.

Siblings found dead in Dilshad Garden flat, both MBAs and reclusive
New Delhi: A man and his sister were found dead, suspected to have ended their lives by suicide, in their rented flat in north-east Delhi's Dilshad Garden on Sunday. Neighbours and family described the siblings as reclusive, rarely venturing out. The deceased were identified as Viresh Kumar and Preeti Tomar, who were residents of Baghpat. Both were MBA graduates. Viresh worked in the IT sector. The police are investigating possible motives, including financial difficulties and depression. Police received a PCR call around 8.21am, and a team rushed to the spot, which was a flat on the ground floor in D Pocket, Dilshad Garden. "The flat was found locked from inside, and on opening, the bodies of the two were found. They were tenants in the flat since 2021," deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Prashant Priya Gautam said. They lived in a one room set, paying around Rs 1,4000 as rent. The crime and forensic teams went to the spot. The crime scene was videographed. The DCP said they had not found any foul play yet. The owner of the flat said the duo kept to themselves. "They never interacted with anyone in the society, so most people didn't know much about them," the landlord said. He added that they were always paid the rent on time, except for the previous month. "The last time I spoke to him was regarding the rent. He said his sister wasn't well, so I told him not to worry and to pay whenever he could," the landlord said. On Sunday morning, some neighbours smelled a strong odour. "When we reached and checked, it was unbearable. That's when the police were called," he said. Police are in contact with the family of the deceased. Ashok Singh, a neighbour, described them as reclusive and lacking a social circle. "I once went to invite them to my brother's wedding a few years ago, but they didn't even open the door," he said. He occasionally saw the sister cooking, but otherwise, the siblings kept to themselves. "The place where the incident took place was a LIG flat, and in the locality, more than 10 families live," he said. Their cousin, Vijay Tomar, shared that their father, who served in the army, passed away in 2011, followed by their mother in 2021 — both due to illness. The siblings moved from their native village in Baghpat to Delhi, initially living in Jhilmil Colony. "We made an effort to reach out, but they never responded," he said. Tomar mentioned that both were academically gifted and held MBA degrees. "I remember he was working at an IT company in 2020 but lost his job during the pandemic. I'm not sure if he found work afterward," he added. Family members tried to stay in touch, even inviting them to a wedding last year, but they declined. Relatives had also suggested matches for Preeti, but she said she wasn't interested, focusing instead on her studies. "They cut themselves off from everyone. If they were facing difficulties, they could have spoken to us," he said.
