Ravens sign Jaire Alexander following the cornerback's release by the Packers
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Jaire Alexander has signed with the Baltimore Ravens less than two weeks after the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback was released by the Green Bay Packers.
The Ravens posted video Wednesday of star quarterback Lamar Jackson enthusiastically greeting Alexander after he signed with the two-time defending AFC North champions.
The Packers released Alexander on June 9, ending a seven-year run in which he emerged as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks before injuries limited his availability.
ESPN reported that the 28-year-old Alexander was getting a one-year deal with a base value of $4 million and another $2 million in incentives.
Alexander's future with the Packers was the subject of much speculation throughout the offseason because of his hefty contract and recent injury history. Alexander, who has 12 interceptions, had two years remaining on the four-year, $84 million contract extension he signed in May 2022.
A first-round draft pick by Green Bay in 2018, Alexander missed two games early last season with injuries to his quadriceps and groin. He then missed a Nov. 3 loss to Detroit with a knee injury, returned to play 10 snaps in the Packers' next game against Chicago and then was out for the rest of the season.
The games he missed were because of injury with one exception. Alexander was suspended for a late-season game in 2023 because of conduct detrimental to the team after he appointed himself captain and participated in the coin toss for a Christmas Eve win at Carolina, his hometown.

Story went below the strike zone to get a hold of a sinker from Mariners starter Luis Castillo (4-5) in the fourth inning and deposited it beyond the wall in left-center field to break a 1-1 tie. Boston went in front 1-0 in the second inning on a solo shot by rookie Marcelo Mayer, but the Mariners evened the score in the bottom half of the frame when Crochet (7-4) skipped a wild pitch past home plate and Randy Arozarena scored standing up from third base. The left-hander was otherwise excellent, recording eight strikeouts while issuing no walks. He gave up six hits. Right-handed reliever Greg Weissert pitched the ninth to earn his third save, following a scoreless eighth inning from usual closer Aroldis Chapman, who retired the top of the Mariners' lineup in order. Cardinals-White Sox game postponed because of rain
CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals' game at the Chicago White Sox was postponed because of persistent rain on Wednesday. It was rescheduled for Thursday afternoon as part of a straight doubleheader. Advertisement Sonny Gray will pitch for St. Louis in the first game, and Erick Fedde will start for the Cardinals in the series finale. Sean Burke and Adrian Houser will take the mound for Chicago. The 35-year-old Gray is looking to bounce back after he was tagged for six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 6-0 loss at Milwaukee last week. The veteran right-hander is 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA in his last seven starts. Fedde is looking for his first win since May 9. He was traded by Chicago to St. Louis as part of a three-team deal in July 2024 that also included the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cardinals are 5-10 in June. Los Angeles Lakers to be sold for $10 billion valuation, becoming most valuable sports franchise in the world
The Buss family has agreed to sell a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers to the current owner of the L.A. Dodgers, CBS News Los Angeles has confirmed. Mark Walter, Chief Executive Officer of Guggenheim Partners, will assume majority ownership over the iconic franchise once the deal is made official. Current owner Jeanie Buss will retain the title of governor, meaning she'll continue to represent the team in league matters. She's ran the team since her father Jerry's death in 2013. "We can confirm: Mark Walter is entering into an agreement to acquire additional interests in the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, of which he has been a stakeholder since 2021," said a statement from the team. The expected sale is valued at about $10 billion, first reported by ESPN, shattering the current record for the largest sale of a sports team in history. The previous record was last year's $6.1 billion sale of the Lakers' rival Boston Celtics. When the sale goes official, the Lakers will be the most valuable franchise in sports by nearly $4 billion. Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million in 1979, transforming them into one of the world's most recognizable sports franchises. After his death, ownership passed to his family, including children Jeanie and Jim, the latter of which left the team in 2017 after acting as the executive vice president of basketball operations. Since the family's acquisition, the Lakers have a 2236-1467 record and have won 11 NBA Titles with teams that have featured some of the league's most iconic players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and LeBron James. Over that time span, the Lakers have shelled out a number of large player contracts, which include multi-year deals for Bryant, O'Neal, James, Anthony Davis and many more. Similarly, under Walter's tenure as owner, the Dodgers have entered a number of high-dollar deals, most notably inking Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani to a record-breaking $700 million contract in 2023. Johnson, who previously owned part of the Lakers and is also part of the Dodgers' ownership team, took to X to offer his thoughts on the blockbuster deal. "I just talked to my sister Jeanie Buss to tell her congratulations, and that I'm so happy for her and family. I told her that her dad Dr. Buss would be very proud of her," his post said. "Laker fans should be estatic. A few things I can tell you about Mark - he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way.
