Vikings Urged to Pounce on Rival $84 Million CB Who Just Became Available

Vikings Urged to Pounce on Rival $84 Million CB Who Just Became Available originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Vikings used free agency to plug holes in the secondary last offseason and could be poised to employ a similar strategy heading into training camp. Advertisement The NFC North Division rival Green Bay Packers parted ways with All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander on Monday, two years into the two-time Pro Bowler's $84 million contract. When Alexander signed that deal in May 2022, it made him the richest cornerback in NFL history at the time. Things haven't gone great for Alexander since, however. He missed 10 games in each of the past two seasons due to injury issues and was also served a one-game suspension by the team, as personality clashes between Alexander and the Packers' front office/coaching staff became more evident with time. Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Banks-Imagn Images That said, when healthy, the 28-year-old defensive back is still capable of playing lockdown defense. Green Bay may not have let him go were it not for the $17 million in savings the team recouped by doing so. Advertisement Alexander isn't going to come cheap, per say, though right now is the time to sign him to an affordable one-year contract. The Vikings make sense in that regard in several ways, as the team has one lockdown cornerback in Byron Murphy but lost its other two starters at the position during the offseason. Brian Flores also plays an aggressive style of defense that led to a league-leading 24 interceptions by the Vikings last season. Alexander could potentially rebuild his value in a big way statistically in such a scenario, while also playing on a team with legitimate playoff/Super Bowl aspirations and one that will afford him at least two opportunities to inflict direct revenge on his former employer during division play. Kay Adams of FanDuel TV's "Up & Adams" had similar ideas on her Monday broadcast. "My vote for landing spot for one Jaire Alexander would be the Vikings, of course," Adams said. "We can do the funniest thing ever here. Join forces with he who you like jawing against (in Justin Jefferson). Advertisement "Go to the Vikings. So much has gone on between him and Minnesota over the years. They need a corner." Green Bay Packers release star man Jaire Alexander weeks after QB Jordan Love made public plea to keep him

The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with Jaire Alexander, despite their quarterback's desperate plea, according to reports. The Packers are releasing the cornerback after an offseason of uncertainty sparked by two injury-plagued seasons for the 28-year-old. The franchise and player had agreed to explore a potential trade earlier in the offseason, according to Ian Rapoport. After failing to clinch a way out of Green Bay before the NFL Draft in April, the two parties reportedly also discussed a restructured contract. However, with neither option emerging, the Packers and Alexander move on with a clean break. Alexander played just seven of the team's 17 regular season games last season amid multiple injury woes. Over the past two years he's managed to suit up for just 16 of of the Packers' 36 games, including the playoffs, while in the last four years he's missed half of the franchise's regular-season games. Yet, despite his multiple stints on the sidelines, quarterback Jordan Love recently insisted that Alexander was essential to the team. 'He's definitely a player we need back,' Love told Kay Adams said when asked about the All-Pro cornerback back in April. 'He's a guy we need around,' he added during his appearance on FanDuel's 'Up & Adams Show'. 'Locker room, he's a character. That's a guy you never know what you're going to get. With Ja, he's always a guy that interacts with everybody on the team. He jokes around but he also has that serious side to him as a competitor.' Alexander, who was selected by the Packers in the first round in 2018, signed a four-year contract extension with Green Bay in 2022 with two years remaining on the $84 million deal. With Alexander owed $17.5million for the upcoming seasons, it proved tough for the Packers to seal a trade, particularly amid his injury woes. When healthy, Alexander is one of the most impactful cornerbacks in the league, having earned Pro Bowl nods twice. He is also a two-time second-team All-Pro in 2020 and 2021. He has 240 tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown this past season, and 70 passes defended in his seven-year NFL career.

Commanders Signing Rumors Swirl on Packers Cut Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander

Commanders Signing Rumors Swirl on Packers Cut Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders last year made a gigantic leap as a franchise ... and, in terms of position groups, as a secondary as well. Advertisement Could Jaire Alexander fuel another leap forward in 2025? After fielding the worst pass defense in the league in 2023, the Commanders — guided by new head coach Dan Quinn — improved all the way up the charts to employing the third-best group in the NFL in 2024. Washington added Marshon Lattimore to the group during last year's deadline. And the team drafted Trey Amos this year. And now? There's another name corner who is looking for a new home as well. ... and we can understand why there is already a swirl of rumors about how the Commanders should be all over it if possible. All offseason, the Green Bay Packers have publicly suggested a breakup was coming with Alexander. And on Monday, it happened, with the leak that he's about to be cut. Advertisement They tried a trade. That didn't work. So ... who wants to pay a cornerback who has missed substantial time due to injury in three of the last four seasons? Alexander — on paper — would give the Commanders something they haven't had in decades: a second All-Pro caliber corner to join the likes of Lattimore on the outside. Of course, Lattimore hasn't really panned out yet, either ... So "on paper'' doesn't always work. The Commanders, who need as much help as they can get in the secondary, can win a bidding war here, if one ensues; Alexander was playing on a four-year, $84 million extension. But does DC want to pay, say, $20 million for his services? Does he want to take less to join a contender? Advertisement The swirl is just beginning. Bears' Rookie Wide Receiver Has Reaction to Packers' Jaire Alexander News

Bears' Rookie Wide Receiver Has Reaction to Packers' Jaire Alexander News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Green Bay Packers began the start of mini-camp with a huge move within the roster on Monday morning. Advertisement Long-time Packers' cornerback and two-time Second-Team All-Pro Jaire Alexander has been released from the team. It was an interesting move that was made by the Packers, as Alexander was still under contract until 2026 after he signed a four-year, $84 million extension with the team in 2022. Green Bay has shown that they are ready to move on from Alexander after he's played in just 14 games in the past two seasons combined. Advertisement In this case, Bears second-round pick Luther Burden won't ever have to face Jaire Alexander twice in a single season. Burden decided to trash-talk Alexander after his release, commenting "Uh oh" on the NFL's Instagram post. Burden is set to begin his first year in the NFL after being drafted with the No. 39 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of the University of Missouri. In three seasons at Missouri, he contributed 192 receptions, 2,263 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns for the Tigers. Now, Burden will be joining the Chicago Bears' wide receiver room along with DJ Moore and Rome Odunze to give second-year quarterback and 2024 No. 1 pick Caleb Williams another option to throw to. Advertisement Although Luther Burden has huge potential to be another great wide receiver in the league, it's interesting to see a rookie talking smack to an NFL veteran before taking his first ever snap. 5 Jaire Alexander NFL landing spots, including the Eagles

5 Jaire Alexander NFL landing spots, including the Eagles The Green Bay Packers made the surprising decision to release star cornerback Jaire Alexander on Monday, ending his seven-season tenure in Titletown. Alexander is one of the league's best corners when he's healthy, but his durability has been a real concern over the last few seasons. He's averaged seven games in the regular season in the last two years, which may give some teams pause on signing him to anything but a one-year deal. However, for teams with a need at the position, players like Alexander don't always come available this time of year, even if they have injury concerns. In the right situation, he can still play at a high level, even if you can't necessarily depend on him for a full season at this point. Let's run through five teams that would make sense for Alexander in his free agency. Atlanta Falcons The Falcons could use Alexander as a high-end second cornerback on the roster to play next to A.J. Terrell, and he has connections to former Packers secondary coaches Jerry Gray and Justin Hood in Flowery Branch. Atlanta has cornerback Mike Hughes at the ready if injury strikes, as Alexander gives the team as high a ceiling as it has had at its second cornerback position in quite some time. Arizona Cardinals The Cardinals could always add more competition to the cornerback room, and we feel Alexander could easily win the second cornerback spot next to Will Johnson. Honestly, Alexander could be the best cornerback on the roster by the time training camp finishes if he signed with Arizona. This could be a good fit. Buffalo Bills The Bills reportedly had talked with the Packers about trading for Alexander at some point before his release, so Buffalo is a logical destination. Alexander wouldn't be guaranteed a starting job necessarily with 2025 NFL Draft first rounder Maxwell Hairston on the roster, but he would absolutely factor into the competition. Miami Dolphins If Alexander wants to go to a team where he has coaching familiarity and a clear path to a starting job, Miami might be his best destination on this list. Former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry is a linebackers coach and run game coordinator with the Dolphins, and Miami has cornerback Jalen Ramsey on the trade block. Alexander could reasonably lock down the top spot on the cornerback depth chart in Miami. Philadelphia Eagles The Eagles have a clear path for Alexander to win the starting cornerback job opposite of Quinyon Mitchell, and signing with Philadelphia gives him the best chance of any team on this list to play for a Super Bowl. That Philly secondary would be absolutely ferocious if Alexander joined, and we wouldn't be shocked if he ultimately signed with the Eagles at the end of all of this. Also, Philadelphia passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Christian Parker was a defensive assistant for a time in Green Bay with Alexander.
