Pearly* Announce New Album, 'Not So Sweet', And Share New Single/Video 'Superglue'

Scoop18-06-2025
Leather Jacket Records, Pinacolada Records in collaboration with Flying NunRecords are very pleased to announce the upcoming debut offering from Ōtepoti/Dunedin band Pearly*, ' Not So Sweet ' — out on August 29th, and available digitally and on glow-in-the-dark vinyl LP or Exclusive "Flying Nun Black" vinyl LP.
Pearly's music is largely guitar driven alt-rock with influences from Ōtepoti's current noisy scene mixed in with its own tendencies, with songs full of contrasting space and simplicity with explosive pay-offs.
Today Pearly* release the album's first single ' Superglue ' alongside a self-produced music video to accompany it. ' Superglue ' is a heavy guitar driven power pop track melding together big Britpop melodies with early emo instrumental influences.
Pearly* are an alt-rock band fronted by dual songwriters Joel Field (guitar/vocals) and Phaedra Love (bass/vocals), who are joined by Ryan Hill (guitars) and Josh Nicholls (drums). Formed in Ōtepoti in 2023, Pearly* quickly recorded and released their debut EP in 2024. The Pearly* EP was self-released until it was picked up by American indie record label called MPLS who ran a limited pressing of the 7' vinyl. Pearly* then went on to tour and promote the Pearly* EP, and in the process wrote a whole new batch of songs which were then recorded by Aoteoroa music legend Nick Roughan of Skeptics and Bailterspace fame.
Through growing word of mouth, and after a couple of notable live performances and opening slots for Voom, Office Dog, and Twine, as well playing at the recent Junk Fest, Pearly* signed with Leather Jacket Records and Pinacolada Records in collaboration with Flying Nun Records. Their debut album ' Not So Sweet ' will be released on LP in both black vinyl and glow-in-the-dark vinyl variants, and also digitally on August 29th.
Pearly* are hitting the road in Aotearoa with fellow heavy-hitters, Cruelly this June and July, with thanks to Eyegum Scenic Tours. Catch them in a city near you:

Band set to make noise in China

Members of Dunedin band Dale Kerrigan (from left) Josh Nicholls, Joel Field, Connor Blackie and Shlee Nicholls will embark on an 11-show tour across China next month. Photo: supplied Getting their lyrics vetted by the Chinese government was among the hurdles a Dunedin band faced in taking their music to the global stage. Noise rock four-piece Dale Kerrigan announced last week they would be embarking on an 11-show tour across China in September and October — including in Shanghai, Chongqing and two shows in Chengdu. Guitarist Joel Field said he had never been to China before, and still did not know what he was in for. "My small New Zealand brain cannot comprehend how big and complicated these cities are going to be." The tour had been about a year in the making. An overseas promoter contacted the band after watching them perform at last year's Camp A Low Hum music festival. Planning the tour had involved "far more organisation than Dale Kerrigan can handle, to be honest", he said. "At the time, I didn't even have a passport, so we got on to that super quick. "We had to apply for permits, so we sent in all of our lyrics to get them approved by the Chinese Communist Party and make sure they were all good, and they were." They also sent in videos of them performing all their songs before they could apply for visas, but discovered two members of the band were not actually permanent New Zealand citizens. "So the whole process to get all of our proper documentation together has been quite a nightmare, but it's going well now." The tour marked the international debut of the Dunedin band. Formed in 2020, Field said their music was influenced by 1990s acts such as Sonic Youth, as well as contemporary New Zealand bands such as Ringlets. Their third record HEAVY GREASY was released last month exclusively on Bandcamp. Every band fantasised about going on an international tour, the expectation in New Zealand being this would happen in Australia first, he said. Their music was "very hectic", "extremely loud" and "in your face". "I know there's heaps of people in China, so surely some of them like it." He hoped to "turn some people right off" but that other audience members would be "real keen" on their music. "I reckon there's going to be some people standing in the back, still very confused at what we're doing, but I think there'll be some people up front running around and headbanging."

Adam Hattaway & The Haunters Release New Track & VideoTwo Roads + Release Pre-orders For Upcoming Album Hot Variety

Press Release – Adam Hattaway and The Haunters Adam Hattaway has covered a lot of ground. From the indie noise of his debut album, to the lo-fi, country, soul of his double LP Rooster, and the dark, stripped-back ballads of last year's High Horse. The forthcoming album, Hot Variety, brings all these elements together. Recorded to tape, Hot Variety is a fully analog affair. Hattaway reunites with his band The Haunters, but with an entirely different arrangements are stripped back, the sound is dry and unadorned, the playing is looser and captures the immediacy of the moment. Today, Adam Hattaway and The Haunters release the second single from the upcoming album: Two Roads. One of the darker tracks on the record, it was partially written in Adam's sleep and takes inspiration from the haunting true story behind Heavenly Creatures. Hattaway's acoustic guitar is played with aggressive abandon paired with ghostly layers of Hammond organ and bowed guitar. The track evokes the unsettling feeling of being stuck at a crossroads – right on the edge of something. The accompanying music video by Max Liautaud and Gina Johns, features the band performing live in the studio, interspersed with striking birds eye footage of co-writers Adam and Elmore sprinting along gravel roads towards one another. Hot Variety is out September 5th on all digital platforms, with a very limited vinyl release (100 copies) via Leather Jacket Records. Pre-orders are available now.
