The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Africa has teamed up with Uvu Accelerate, the entrepreneurial arm of Uvu Africa, to drive ecosystem development for Africa's first dedicated creative-tech hub. The Timbuktoo Creative Hub will be launched in Cape Town.
Currently under development at the Homecoming Centre (formerly the Athol Fugard Theatre) in District Six, the hub will serve as a dynamic space for Africa's creative entrepreneurs.
Designed to be a catalyst for growth across the creative sector, including film, music, fashion, gaming, animation, design, and digital arts industries, the hub will provide essential infrastructure, business support, and technology to help creatives transform their talent into sustainable enterprises.
UVU Accelerate will work with key partners as the hub manager to develop an enabling ecosystem that fosters collaboration, investment, and innovation in the creative-tech sector.
'Creative industries are a major driver of economic growth, yet African creatives often lack access to the resources, networks, and funding needed to scale their businesses,' said Lara Rosmarin, head of entrepreneur development at Uvu Accelerate.
'The Timbuktoo Creative Hub will provide a game-changing platform for creative entrepreneurs to connect, co-create, and commercialise their work, accelerating the growth of Africa's creative economy.'
Speaking on the broader vision for the project, Ian Merrington, CEO of Uvu Africa, emphasised the importance of cluster development in driving economic opportunity:
'Globally, creative industries thrive when supported by strong ecosystems. Through the Timbuktoo Creative Hub, we are building a dedicated cluster that will boost investment, unlock opportunities, and position Africa as a global leader in creative technology.
'We aim to create an environment where creative entrepreneurs can scale their businesses, contribute to job creation, and drive economic transformation.'
Opening soon
The Timbuktoo Creative Hub will soon open, offering an advanced environment for creatives to work, collaborate, and access mentorship, funding, and digital tools. The initiative is part of a broader effort by UNDP and its partners to empower Africa's entrepreneurs and recognise their vast potential to drive economic growth across the continent.

Wood Mackenzie to Deliver Strategic Insight into Africa's Energy Sector as African Energy Week (AEW) 2025 Silver Partner

Global energy and consultancy group Wood Mackenzie has confirmed its participation as a Silver Partner at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, scheduled for September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. Backed by over five decades of global experience, Wood Mackenzie's partnership reaffirms the firm's strategic commitment to shaping Africa's energy narrative through data-driven insight and trusted industry partnerships. The firm has worked extensively with national governments and state-owned energy companies to develop long-term energy strategies, evaluate exploration potential and structure critical infrastructure projects. Recent contributions by Wood Mackenzie to Africa's energy strategy includes supporting the Republic of Congo's first Gas Master Plan, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Hydrocarbons. The plan is set to guide monetization, domestic use and export strategies for gas resources – anchored by developments such as the Marine XII LNG project, which delivered its first cargo in early 2025 and is progressing toward a 3.5-billion-cubic-meter-per-year expansion phase. AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit for more information about this exciting event. In its latest 2025 outlook, Wood Mackenzie forecasts that Africa's upstream capital expenditure will stabilize around $40 billion annually, with significant activity in gas and LNG-led developments. New discoveries across Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast and Libya, combined with major finds by multinational oil and gas company Shell in Namibia's Orange Basin, underscore the continent's rising profile in global exploration. Meanwhile, Wood Mackenzie is also spearheading thought leadership on Africa's energy transition. According to the firm's 2025 Energy Transition Outlook: Africa, the continent's electricity demand will double by 2050, while bioenergy's share in residential and commercial energy demand will decline from 81% today to 70% in a base scenario – and 50% in a net-zero pathway. The firm notes that despite this growth, Africa will contribute just 3-6% of global emissions by 2050, emphasizing the importance of a balanced energy mix that includes oil and gas. According to the outlook, solar additions in Africa dropped to 3.5 GW in 2024, down from 4 GW the previous year, with South Africa leading deployment. At the same time, sub-Saharan Africa's oil and gas production grew by 5%, driven by output gains in Nigeria, Mozambique, Senegal and the Republic of Congo. With critical insight into both hydrocarbon and renewable energy markets, Wood Mackenzie continues to support Africa's goals of energy security and climate resilience. At AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025, Wood Mackenzie will be represented by a senior delegation, including Mansur Mohammed, Head of Business Development, Africa; Gavin Thompson, Vice Chairman-Europe, Middle East and Africa; David Parkinson, Head of Exploration; and Ian Thom, Research Director-Upstream. The team is expected to deliver presentations and participate in high-level panel discussions on upstream investment, gas development and Africa's energy transition. 'Wood Mackenzie's data-driven insights offer investors greater clarity into the vast opportunities present in Africa's energy sector. Their robust data, strategic foresight and trusted guidance make them a go-to partner for global investors, project operators and governments looking to navigate Africa's evolving energy landscape,' states Tomás Gerbasio, VP of Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber. South Africa: Home Affairs expands Trusted Tour Operator Scheme to boost tourism jobs

The Department of Home Affairs has expanded its Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) by adding 45 new vetted operators, increasing the total number participating to 110. Launched six months ago, the programme aims to simplify visa applications and boost tourism from key source markets like India and China. Since the launch of TTOS in February 2025, the scheme has attracted over 25,000 tourists who might otherwise have been deterred by long visa processing times and cumbersome paper-based systems. Research from Operation Vulindlela estimates that one new formal sector job is created for every 13 tourists visiting South Africa, suggesting that the scheme has already contributed to approximately 1,924 new jobs during its first phase. Digital-first approach replaces old system TTOS replaces manual, inefficient visa processes requiring applicants to travel long distances for in-person applications and returns. Instead, vetted tour operators upload visa applications online and receive digital decisions within an average of 24 hours. Participating tour operators enter agreements with the Department of Home Affairs to take responsibility for the tourists they bring to the country. Minister highlights digital transformation agenda Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber said the scheme reflects the department's digital transformation agenda aimed at economic growth and job creation. 'The fact that we have attracted over 25,000 tourists in just six months working with a small handful of tour operators confirms the enormous potential of growing this digital-first approach," he said. Broader reforms to support tourism growth Dr Schreiber added that the expansion of TTOS is part of broader reforms, including the introduction of Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and dedicated visa schemes for events and creative industries. "All of our work is guided by our vision to deliver Home Affairs @ home, by building digital channels that enable both South Africans and legitimate travellers to obtain services online, from the comfort of their own homes,' he said. The Department said that it sees TTOS as a crucial step towards boosting tourism's contribution to South Africa's economy amid ongoing economic challenges. All rights reserved. © 2022. South Africa: Pick n Pay partners with Capitec for in-store banking across 1,400 locations

Pick n Pay is making banking even easier for South Africans by bringing more banks under one roof. From FNB to Absa, TymeBank to Standard Bank — and now Capitec — customers can deposit cash, withdraw funds, and transfer money instantly while doing their grocery shopping. The latest addition of Capitec cash deposits at Pick n Pay tills cements the retailer's position as one of the most accessible in-store banking network in the country, now serving customers from over 11 financial institutions nationwide. Banking at the checkout means no extra trips, no standing in bank queues, and no need for an app or complicated onboarding. Deposits are secure and reflect in customer accounts within minutes—providing a safe, quick, and affordable alternative to ATMs or bank branches. 'We are proud to offer the most inclusive retail banking solution in South Africa,' says Deven Moodley, executive Head of Pick n Pay's Value-Added Services, Financial Services, and Mobile division. 'By integrating an expanded banking offering into the shopping experience, we're saving customers time, reducing transport costs, and improving access to essential financial services.' Responding to a changing banking landscape South Africa's banking sector is evolving rapidly. In the past five years, the number of ATMs operated by the country's four major banks has dropped by 8,345 units, driven by high maintenance costs, security concerns, and limited reach. As a result, banks are increasingly partnering with retailers like Pick n Pay to expand their reach more efficiently. This collaboration offers customers extended service hours, easily accessible locations, and the convenience of banking during routine shopping trips—helping to strengthen financial inclusion and reduce reliance on informal cash systems. Affordable, nationwide access Pick n Pay also offers one of the lowest flat fees for store-to-store money transfers in the country. With over 1,400 stores nationwide participating, customers can enjoy the freedom to manage their money anytime they shop.
