South Africa: Cape Town to host Africa's first creative-tech hub backed by UNDP, Uvu Africa

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Africa has teamed up with Uvu Accelerate, the entrepreneurial arm of Uvu Africa, to drive ecosystem development for Africa's first dedicated creative-tech hub. The Timbuktoo Creative Hub will be launched in Cape Town. Currently under development at the Homecoming Centre (formerly the Athol Fugard Theatre) in District Six, the hub will serve as a dynamic space for Africa's creative entrepreneurs. Designed to be a catalyst for growth across the creative sector, including film, music, fashion, gaming, animation, design, and digital arts industries, the hub will provide essential infrastructure, business support, and technology to help creatives transform their talent into sustainable enterprises. UVU Accelerate will work with key partners as the hub manager to develop an enabling ecosystem that fosters collaboration, investment, and innovation in the creative-tech sector. 'Creative industries are a major driver of economic growth, yet African creatives often lack access to the resources, networks, and funding needed to scale their businesses,' said Lara Rosmarin, head of entrepreneur development at Uvu Accelerate. 'The Timbuktoo Creative Hub will provide a game-changing platform for creative entrepreneurs to connect, co-create, and commercialise their work, accelerating the growth of Africa's creative economy.' Speaking on the broader vision for the project, Ian Merrington, CEO of Uvu Africa, emphasised the importance of cluster development in driving economic opportunity: 'Globally, creative industries thrive when supported by strong ecosystems. Through the Timbuktoo Creative Hub, we are building a dedicated cluster that will boost investment, unlock opportunities, and position Africa as a global leader in creative technology. 'We aim to create an environment where creative entrepreneurs can scale their businesses, contribute to job creation, and drive economic transformation.' Opening soon The Timbuktoo Creative Hub will soon open, offering an advanced environment for creatives to work, collaborate, and access mentorship, funding, and digital tools. The initiative is part of a broader effort by UNDP and its partners to empower Africa's entrepreneurs and recognise their vast potential to drive economic growth across the continent. Mayor Hill-Lewis condemns bomb threat against Cape Town mosque

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said on Wednesday his office had been in contact with the police to investigate a case of intimidation related to a bomb threat message received via cellphone against the Al-Azhar Mosque in District Six. ' I condemn the sinister motives behind this threatening message. Cape Town is a city of peace-loving people, where differences of faith and opinion are expressed loudly and fully, but always peacefully,' said Hill-Lewis. 'Our city has a long and proud history of being a safe city for people of all religions to live [in] and express their faith and traditions. For generations, Capetonians of every faith and creed have lived side-by-side and always show kindness, unity and generosity towards one another. Let us all commit to protecting and defending the best of that history.' Police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the incident occurred on May 4 and no arrests had been made. MMC for safety and security JP Smith said the city was supporting the investigation at the request of the police, which includes its safety and security investigative unit (SSIU). 'I have further referred this incident to disaster risk management (DRM) and the SSIU in terms of our joint safer places of worship project,' said Smith. Hill-Lewis added this was the second such incident, after an explosive device was thrown over the front wall of the Jewish Community Centre on Hatfield Street in the CBD in December 2024. 'We call on the police to prioritise these investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,' he said. TimesLIVE

Miami-Dade mayor recruits new transportation director from DeSantis administration

The head of state transportation projects in the Miami area will take over Miami-Dade's transit system under an appointment announced Friday by the county's mayor, Daniella Levine Cava. Stacy Miller, who holds the title of district secretary in the Florida Department of Transportation, will take over as transportation and public works director in Miami-Dade. She replaces Eulois Cleckley, the former Denver public works chief Levine Cava hired shortly after winning office in 2020. Cleckley left his $298,000-a-year county post last year to lead the fundraising operation of the Underline, a privately run bike and pedestrian trail under the county's Metrorail system. Miller, an engineer, took over the Miami-Dade and Monroe County operations at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in 2021 under Gov. Ron DeSantis. The job gave her the title of District Six secretary and made her the point person for state funding for road, bridge and transit projects across the region. With Miami-Dade projecting a budget crunch next year, those dollars are even more important as Miller comes in to oversee the county's roads, bridges, traffic lights and transit system in a job that will pay $302,000 a year, according to an offer letter released Friday by the mayor's office. Miller takes over as Levine Cava's administration is predicting a revenue shortfall in next year's county budget even as the county prepares to open a rapid-transit bus line in South Miami-Dade and pursues federal funds to open a commuter rail between Miami and Aventura. Both projects — the South Dade rapid-transit bus line and the Coastal Link rail line — are part of the county's SMART Plan blueprint, an initiative that counts on state funding to become reality. Javier Betancourt, director of the office overseeing the county's half-percent sales tax for transportation, praised Miller for her extensive state contacts and strong local relationships. 'I was delighted to hear about the appointment,' said Betancourt, director of the Citizens Independent Transportation Trust. 'She's familiar with our community, and she's committed to the SMART Plan.'
