1st Test: India, England players wear black armbands to pay respect to David Lawrence
There was a round of applause from both teams and crowd before start of play on Day 3.
"Both teams are wearing black armbands to pay their respects to former England Cricketer, David 'Syd' Lawrence, who has sadly passed away. There was a moment's applause before start of play on Day 3," BCCI posted on X.
Lawrence died at the age of 61 after battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease. 'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed," a statement from Lawrence family shared by Gloucestershire read.
After making his international debut in 1988, Lawrence played five Tests between 1988 and 1992, taking 18 wickets, including a famous five-wicket-haul against the West Indies at The Oval in 1991 - in the same innings he dismissed the great Viv Richards.
His international career was tragically cut short in 1992 by a horrific knee injury sustained during a Test match in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2023, He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a life-shortening neurological disorder which causes muscle weakness that gets worse over a few months or years.
Born on January 28, 1964, Lawrence made his first-class debut in 1981 for Gloucestershire at just 17. He played 170 first-class matches for Gloucestershire, taking 477 wickets at 31.27, including a best of 7 for 47 against Warwickshire. Over a 16-year career, he became a club icon for his fearless fast bowling.
In one-day cricket, he claimed 148 wickets in 110 appearances, with a standout 6 for 20 against a Combined Universities XI in 1991 - the third best return in Gloucestershire's 50-over history.
Coming back to the match, England lost overnight batter Ollie Pope early in the session as pacer Prasidh Krishna bagged his first wicket of the match. Pope departed after playing a knock of 106. Harry Brook continued his hard hitting before he fell to Mohammed Siraj.

'To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it's imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked," Kuruvilla wrote in the email, as quoted by The Indian Express. The Duleep Trophy is a Zonal tournament with six zones. Teams are picked by Zonal selectors who are picked from the state associations. 'Participation in domestic matches: All players, contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into Team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI. In case any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament from the National coach and the chairman of selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case any leave is granted, the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason," he added. The Duleep Trophy begins on August 28. It's unclear whether South Zone picks an updated squad. BCCI To End Partnership With Dream11? Secretary Saikia Issues Big Update
Last Updated: BCCI would comply with the Indian government's new upcoming Bills against real money companies, even if it might mean ending sponsorship deal with Dream11. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in full support of the central government's two new bills — the National Sports Governance Law, 2025 and Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 (which was passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, but is yet to become a law) — and will follow them in 'true letter and spirit', according to secretary Devajit Saikia. Both regulations could have a significant impact on the board and the Indian cricket teams. To start with, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill is calling for a blanket ban on all real-money gaming platforms and their promoters. That will include Dream11, the official shirt sponsor of the BCCI. 'Once the act comes into force, we will look into it, examine it and if it's permissible, then we will take sponsorship (from online betting and gaming companies), if it's not permissible, we'll not do anything," Saikia told The Times of India about the latter. 'Take the example of cigarettes and liquor. Has the BCCI taken any sponsorship from the cigarettes and liquor companies once taking sponsorship from these kinds of companies was banned? So, whatever is permissible in the laws in force in our country, we will do that only. The BCCI will follow every policy of the country which is framed by the central government," he added. The National Sports Governance Law, 2025, made the government's stance on multi-national cricket between India and Pakistan formal, allowing the BCCI to participate and play against the Men in Green in the 2025 Asia Cup in September. Under it, bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan remains outlawed, with cricketers from across the border not allowed to step into India unless it's for a multi-nation tournament. 'The central government has taken the interest of the players, the teams and also, the events that are going to be hosted by our country in the future. So, all these things are very nicely taken by the government of India and we fully endorse the view expressed by the central government and we will 100% abide by the policy framed by the central government," Saikia added. 'The BCCI will not go a single inch against the government's policy. We will fully abide by all policies of the central government, whether it is participating in an international sporting event or regarding sponsorship. The Board of Control for Cricket in India , especially, has reason to be worried as two prominent gaming companies - Dream11 and My11Circle are its key sponsors. While Dream11 is the title sponsor of Team India, My11Circle holds the fantasy gaming rights for the IPL for the next three years. The policy will enable Team India to compete in the T20 Asia Cup in UAE next month, despite the growing clamour for boycott and withdrawal from the tournament. India are supposed to play Pakistan at least twice in the tournament - on Sept 14 in the league stage and on Sept 21, in the Super Four stage. India will not host or visit pakistan for bilateral contests, but their athletes and teams can take part in multi-nation events that also involve Pakistan, clearing the path for their upcoming fixtures in the men's Asia Cup in September and the women's ODI World Cup in October (India will play Pakistan in Colombo on Oct 5). Pakistan's sportspersons can also participate in multilateral events hosted by India, but it's not clear if India's athletes can go to Pakistan for similar sporting events.
