Nadler blasts Columbia for ‘outrageous and embarrassing' settlement with Trump administration
'I am deeply disappointed by reports of Columbia University's outrageous and embarrassing $200 million capitulation to the Trump Administration's repugnant extortion campaign,' Nadler, a Columbia alumnus whose district borders the school, said in a statement on the social platform X.
'[M]y alma mater has allowed a once highly-respected institution to succumb to the Trump Administration's coercive and exploitative tactics,' Nadler added. 'Columbia has effectively waived the white flag of surrender in its battle at the heart of the Trump Administration's war on higher education and academic freedom.'
The Trump administration and Columbia University on Monday announced a settlement, whereby the Ivy League institution agreed to pay $221 million to restore the more than $400 million in federal funding that was cut off by the administration.
In cutting off Columbia's funding, the Trump administration originally cited alleged inaction on antisemitism, though Education Secretary Linda McMahon pointed to more ideological motives.
'This is a monumental victory for conservatives who wanted to do things on these elite campuses for a long time because we had such far left-leaning professors,' McMahon said on Fox Business Network.
The university, which saw some of the nation's most active pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations amid the war in Gaza, did not have to admit to wrongdoing as part of the deal.
Nadler stressed the need for Columbia to do more to protect Jewish students on campus, but he said the latest settlement would do nothing to help those students.
'While Columbia needs to do a better job at protecting its students against antisemitism on campus, this disgraceful and humiliating action will not, in anyway, improve the situation on campus for Jewish students,' Nadler said.
'Columbia's students, faculty, staff, and larger community deserve better than this cowardly decision,' he added.

France's Ministry For Europe and Foreign Affairs put out a statement on Tuesday voicing the country's 'immense sadness' on learning of 'the murder' of Odeh Hathalin. 'France condemns this murder in the strongest possible terms, as well as all the deliberate violence perpetrated by extremist settlers against the Palestinian population, which has been increasing across the West Bank, particularly in Kafr Malik and the Christian village of Taybeh in recent weeks,' read the statement. 'This violence constitutes an act of terrorism. Settlers have killed more than 30 people since the beginning of 2022. Israeli authorities must take responsibility and immediately punish the perpetrators of this violence, which continues with impunity, and protect Palestinian civilians,' it added. Israeli police said they arrested an Israeli citizen for questioning on the incident. Trump calls Manhattan shooting suspect 'crazed lunatic,' after gunman kills four
Trump commented on the Midtown Manhattan shooting on Truth Social while on a trip to Scotland. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says he has been briefed in the Midtown Manhattan shooting that took the lives of at least four people, including a New York City police officer. "I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence," Trump said in a Truth Social Post. "My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York!" Trump currently resides in Palm Beach, Florida, and is presently on a trip to Scotland. He said the shooting was "tragic" and referred to Manhattan as "a place that I know and love" in a social media post hours after he cut the ribbon at his Aberdeen golf property expansion and played an inaugural round at the course that is set to open later this month.

GOP lawmaker proposes renaming Kennedy Center after Trump
Rep. Bob Onder, R-Missouri, introduced a bill that would designate the Kennedy Center as the 'Donald J. Trump Center for Performing Arts.' WASHINGTON - A House Republican is proposing to rename the iconic John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts after President Donald Trump. Missouri Rep. Bob Onder has dubbed his bill the 'Make Entertainment Great Again Act" and would re-designate the District of Columbia institution that was named in remembrance of Kennedy, the 35th president who was assassinated in 1963. Onder's plan would change the building's name to the 'Donald J. Trump Center for Performing Arts" and comes after a key House panel also voted to put first lady Melania Trump's name on the Kennedy Center's opera house. Onder in a statement said Trump has 'entertained audiences for decades,' referring to the two-term Republican president's prior run as host of the reality TV show "The Apprentice" and appearances in films such as "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." In February, Trump appointed himself chairman of the Kennedy Center and pushed out billionaire philanthropist David M. Rubenstein, who previously served in the role. He also dismissed individuals part of the chair's board of trustees. Trump complained of "woke" programming at the Kennedy Center, citing "drag shows" held there as one of the reasons for taking command of the center and vowing to stop such performances. The Kennedy Center, affiliated with the National Symphony Orchestra and Washington National Opera, hosts more than 2,000 performances a year.
