JJ Spaun
matched the best opening round ever recorded at a
US Open
held at
Oakmont
, seizing a one-stroke lead after 18 holes, while top contenders like
Scottie Scheffler
and
Rory McIlroy
faltered.
The 34-year-old American delivered a flawless, bogey-free four-under 66 — his lowest score in nine major championship appearances — to tame Oakmont's notoriously punishing layout.
Spaun's round tied the lowest first-round score at a US Open at Oakmont, matching Andrew Landry's 66 from 2016, and marked just the eighth bogey-free round in US Open history at the iconic Pennsylvania venue, which is hosting the championship for a record 10th time.

"I'm just overly pleased with how I started," Spaun said. "I hit a lot of good shots and tried to capitalize on any birdie opportunities, which aren't very many out here.
"But I scrambled really well, too, which is a huge component to playing well at a US Open, let alone shoot a bogey-free round."

The American delivered a highlight-filled round, sinking a 42-foot eagle putt at the par-5 fourth. He stumbled with bogeys at the 10th and 14th but finished strong, rolling in back-to-back birdies — a five-footer at the 17th and a 16-foot putt to close out his round at the 18th.

World number one Scheffler, aiming for back-to-back major titles following his PGA Championship triumph in May, endured a turbulent opening round at the US Open, carding a three-over 73 — his worst first round to par in a major.
Scheffler's round featured three birdies offset by six bogeys, a rare struggle for the in-form American who had won three of his last four starts, including a golden run that featured Olympic gold in Paris last year.
McIlroy, ranked second, who achieved a career Grand Slam with his Masters victory, carded a 74. Starting from the back nine, he secured birdies on the 11th and 12th holes but struggled later with four bogeys and a double bogey.
The reigning champion DeChambeau recorded a 73, managing two birdies but conceding five bogeys.

American Patrick Reed etched his name into the history books by making only the fourth albatross in US Open history, holing out from 286 yards with a three-wood on the par-5 fourth hole.
It marked the first albatross at any major since Nick Watney achieved the feat at the 2012 US Open at Olympic Club, adding a spectacular highlight to Reed's round at Oakmont.

Who is Johnny Miller? The golf great who made history with a 63 at 1973 Oakmont US Open

Oakmont Country Club, the quintessential US Open venue, is proving to be a brutal test of skill and resilience, with only a select few golfers making the best of the challenging situation. At the ongoing tournament, Sam Burns saw one of the best rounds of the year, when he registered a 5-under 65 to score a 3-under par through 36 holes in the second round. Notably, only two players in history have posted better scores in a round of the US Open at Oakmont. The first to do so was Johnny Miller (63) in 1973, followed by Loren Roberts (64) in 1974, according to Underdog Golf. This makes Burns the 10th player to shoot 65, putting him in the league of a select few golfers. Born in San Francisco, California in 1947, Miller is a renowned golf and considered one of the top players around the world. He played 412 events and won 25 PGA Tour tournaments, including two majors. He also bagged six international wins and emerged runner up in 16 events, while finishing at the third place in 10 and 60 times in top five, according to Miller joined the PGA Tour in 1969. During the US Open tournament in 1973, Miller came into the spotlight for shooting 63 in a major championship. This came after he saw two close calls back to back in 1971 (T-5) and 1972, when he finished at the seventh position. Recently, Miller recalled the 'tip' that led to his 1973 US Open record. In an article for he stated that while he was warming up, a voice came into his head and said, 'Open your stance way up.' He immediately followed it and hit his last half-dozen balls straight. Eventually, he ended up hitting 13 of 14 fairways as well as all 18 greens in regulation. In the end, he tapped in for a 63, which is the lowest round in major championship history. As per reports, he currently resides in California's Monterey Peninsula. He finished as the runner-up three times in 1971, 1975 and 1981. Miller decided to quit golf to spend time with his family, including more than two dozen grandchildren.

Manipur's Suman eager to cement her place in the Indian women's hockey team

As the Indian women's hockey team begins their European leg of FIH Pro League against Australia at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London on Saturday, one player who will be more than eager to showcase her skills is Manipur's Suman Devi Thoudam. After breaking into the senior team as a teenager way back in 2017 during a Test series against Belarus in Bhopal under the then coach Sjoerd Marijne, she went onto play 12 matches including the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy where India finished second behind South Korea. She played few more games after that but couldn't ever cement her place in the squad and last played during the 2022 Pro League against the Netherlands in Bhubaneswar. However, she has made a comeback into the squad after three years and made her presence felt during India's tour of Australia last month where the Harendra Singh-coached side played five matches and won one. Speaking about her return, Suman said, "During the first game, I felt a bit nervous. But I had played under Harendra sir earlier and he gave me a lot of confidence. Sushila Chanu has also supported me a lot at the camp." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo And the person who was the happiest seeing her return to the team was her father. A hockey player himself during his youth at the local club level, Thoudam Anand Singh used to wear his daughter's jersey and proudly stroll around the neighbourhood. "He stopped doing it though after I was dropped from the team. He had told me then that he would wear them after I made it to the team again," added Suman. A carpenter by profession till a few years back, Anand, hopefully, has started wearing them now and will be watching the Pro League games from Imphal home, where he resides along with his wife. However, this remarkable return wouldn't have been possible but for the coaches at National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Delhi, who gave Suman all the support she needed. "After I was dropped from the squad, I trained hard and worked a lot on my fitness but never did I feel that hockey was over for me. I obviously felt sad but I kept telling myself that I have enough time in my hands to make a comeback," added Suman, who also landed a job in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in 2022, much to the relief of her family. This struggle though wasn't anything compared to when she first came to Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in 2014 and struggled to get accustomed. "I couldn't understand Hindi even a bit, I used to feel nervous and scared, felt like crying and wanted to go back home," recollected the defender, who also led the U-21 side in two invitational meets in 2019. Luckily she persevered and today she has another chance to prove to everybody what she is capable of. And what better opponents to do it against than Australia. Multi-sports hub to come up in city's heart at Mor Hindi School

1 2 3 4 5 6 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to convert the now-defunct Barrister Sheshrao Wankhede Vidya Niketan, popularly known as Mor Hindi School in Ramdaspeth, into a dedicated multi-sport facility including skating, badminton and basketball courts with a proposed budget of Rs40–Rs50 lakh. Taking cognisance of long-pending demands from locals, NMC commissioner and administrator Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari on Friday visited the site and directed officials to immediately clear the premises and prepare a detailed plan for the sports development. As the school remained closed for several years, residents urged the civic body to make productive use of the available open ground and infrastructure by introducing recreational and sport facilities. Currently, the premises house the advanced Young Kalam Science Centre operated by HCL Foundation. Another section of the building is used by the Dharampeth zone office to store old education department material, Covid-era supplies, and equipment seized during anti-encroachment drives. Assistant commissioner Snehalata Kumbhar informed that a contractor was already appointed to dispose of these old items and will clear the premises in the coming week. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? After visiting the place, Ambulkar told TOI the plan includes developing a skating rink, badminton and pickleball courts, and a basketball facility. "One of the indoor halls is being activated for regular badminton games, while a skating rink and basketball court will be developed outside," said Ambulkar. The commissioner also directed officials to ensure the construction of clean and accessible toilet facilities for players and visitors. Once complete, the Rs40–Rs50 lakh project is expected to offer much-needed sports infrastructure to residents of Ramdaspeth and Dharampeth, converting an idle civic asset into a vibrant recreational hub. Dr Chaudhari inspected the school campus along with NMC medical health officer Dr Deepak Selokar, Dharampeth zone assistant commissioner Snehalata Kumbhar, sports officer Piyush Ambulkar, executive engineers Manoj Singh, Naresh Gadre, deputy education officer Sanjay Dighore and representatives of HCL Foundation including Piyush Wankhede and Ajinkya Kulkarni.
