Sundowns coach Cardoso feels his work not truly appreciated

TimesLIVE13-05-2025

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has suggested he feels his work at the club since joining the Brazilians in December is not fully always appreciated by the public and media.
Downs are on the verge of clinching the Betway Premiership, needing a point in their clash against Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Wednesday. Downs could also be champions if Orlando Pirates drop points against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.
'It's important people recognise what we've done and what we've been doing in this league,' Cardoso said after his team's 3-0 thumping of Stellenbosch FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
'We took the team to a high, high level. The team isn't only playing fantastically but beating records after records.

'Let's give credit to those who deserve it because when I arrived there was suspicion [Cardoso might fail] and now please just respect the work we've been doing.'
Cardoso agreed his predecessor, Manqoba Mngqithi, deserves a share of the credit for the imminent title success. Sundowns' coach revealed he paid homage to the former Brazilians coach in person when Downs drew 1-1 against Mngqithi's new team, Arrows, in Durban in early March.
'People are saying I arrived in the middle of the season. No, I didn't arrive in the middle of the season.
'I arrived with only one third of the season played, so with all due respect to coach Manqoba and the work he did, that was important obviously — I think it's clear for everybody to see where we were and where we stand now.
'Obviously, it was important to pick the team from the position [leading the Premiership] they were in [when Cardoso arrived] and that's the credit I give to him [Mngqithi] — and I told him personally when we played him.'
Cardoso has won 16 of the 19 Premiership games, with two defeats and a draw, he has been in charge of at Sundowns, after replacing Mngqithi seven games into the league campaign.
The Portuguese also has steered Sundowns to the Caf Champions League final, where face Pyramids of Egypt over two legs in Pretoria on May 24 and Cairo on June 1.

Will Jose Riveiro raid Orlando Pirates for signings?

Orlando Pirates are preparing to start a new era without former coach Jose Riveiro, who moved to Al Ahly. Pirates allowed Riveiro to leave for Al Ahly early, so that he can help them prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup. During his tenure, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, Beyond that, he led the Buccaneers into a second place in the Betway Premiership. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten. Riveiro led Pirates to a semifinal finish in the CAF Champions League, with a Nedbank Cup final too. Now as he embarks on his new journey at Al Ahly, he will undoubtedly be looking to reinforce his squad. Speaking upon his arrival at the club, he has already expressed delight at what he has at his disposal. 'I like the players to be at the same level. We will participate in many tournaments in the coming period, and I don't like any player to be guaranteed a place in the team. Every player must perform strongly in training in order to be a regular starter in matches. We want strong players who can always compete. I don't want a large number of players on the team. I like a small number of players, and that's what I prefer.' He told Al Ahly TV as per Tahiamasr . Riveiro also seemed to put to bed any rumours that he will be looking to sign any players from Pirates. 'I want to give every player a chance. I didn't ask any player from Orlando (Pirates) to join Al Ahly. The current group at Al Ahly is excellent, and Mahmoud El Khatib, the club's president, is constantly supporting the team. I always like to focus and work with the players so they can compete in the coming period. I trust all the players, and the fans' ambitions are very natural because they always want to win championships. Without the fans' pressure, Al Ahly would have failed to win titles.' Said Riveiro. PSL transfer buzz: Long-term target ‘eager to join Kaizer Chiefs'!

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi travelled to Tanzania in a bid to lure long-term target Fesial Salum, a meeting that is said to have gone swimmingly for the former Young Africans manager. 'Nabi reportedly held a crucial meeting with Feisal Salum during his visit. This meeting confirms Nabi's continued keen interest in the dynamic midfielder, a player he has long admired,' a source said. 'Previous attempts to secure Salum's services hit a snag due to a significant disparity in valuation between the clubs involved. However, the recent meeting appears to have breathed new life into the potential transfer. ' 'Crucially, sources close to the player confirm he is highly receptive to the project and is eager to join Kaizer Chiefs next season.'. According to reports, Kaizer Chiefs are hoping to sign Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro in the second time of asking. 'Yes, it's true. Chiefs are believed to have enquired about Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro,' a SoccerLaduma source revealed 'You know the thing is the same people who scouted him from Nigeria for Sundowns are the same who have enquired about him for Kaizer Chiefs.' 'Actually it's not the first time they have enquired about him. They tried before when he was on loan at Chippa United but Sundowns sent him on loan at SuperSport United. But now they are apparently looking at the possibility of Sundowns letting him go and they can pounce on him.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Rulani Mokwena linked with Pyramids FC job after Krunoslav Jurcic exit rumours

Mokwena set for Pyramids job? Former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena's name has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Croatian Krunoslav Jurcic at newly crowned African champions Pyramids FC. Photo: BackpagePix According to reports, Jurcic now looks like he's on his way out, and the next man in could be Mokwena, who was recently fired by Morocco's Wydad Casablanca after an underwhelming season. The Egyptian club made history this past weekend when they became the latest team to add their name to the list of CAF Champions League winners when they beat Sundowns in Cairo. A report in The Egyptian Telegraph suggests that club bosses at the newly crowned African champions have been impressed with what Mokwena has been able to achieve at just 38 years old, and are working behind the scenes to ensure that his next port of call is in Cairo. Should Mokwena move to Egypt, it could leave his mentor Pitso Mosimane as the favourite for the Pirates job. A report in Soccer Laduma earlier this week suggested the name of Marco Rose, formerly of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. However, due to the significant amount of money the club would need to lure the German to South Africa, it's unlikely we will be seeing him in the PSL. Mandla Ncikazi, Riveiro's number two at Pirates, was put in charge of the team on an interim basis after the Spaniard's departure. There have been calls for Ncikazi, who has intimate knowledge of the current squad, to be given the job on a full-time basis. IOL Sport
