Nigerian tribunal upholds $220 million fine against Meta for violating consumer, data laws
A $220 million fine against Meta Platforms by Nigeria's competition watchdog for violating local consumer, data protection and privacy laws has been upheld following an unsuccessful appeal, Nigeria's Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal said on Friday.
Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) fined Meta last July for discriminatory and exploitative practices against Nigerian consumers, compared with other jurisdictions with similar regulations.

Bengaluru drug bust: Nigerian woman arrested, MDMA worth ₹10 cr. recovered
In a major drug haul, Chikkajala police and sleuths from the Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested a Nigerian woman named Princess, 25, and recovered 5.325 kgs of MDMA crystals worth ₹10 crore from her in Bengaluru. Acting on a tip-off regarding a foreign national trying to peddle drugs in Chikkajala, the police raided and detained Princess on Tuesday, June 10. She had reached Bengaluru by bus from Delhi the same day, police revealed. Apart from the MDMA crystals, an iPhone and a bag full of new churidars were also recovered. Officials said that Princess, the daughter of a civil servant in Nigeria, came to Delhi on a business visa on October 4, 2021, and later availed a student visa claiming to study in Hyderabad. However, it has now emerged that she did not get admitted to any college, and instead got involved in drug peddling. Her visa has expired, police said. Princess claimed that she was only a mule, carrying a bag from Delhi and delivering it to Bengaluru on the instructions of her friend based out of Nigeria. While the city police are trying to identify her associate, they are not buying the theory that she is innocent. This case comes months after Mangaluru police seized 37.878 kgs of MDMA crystals worth ₹75 crore from Electronics City and arrested two South African nationals in March earlier this year. Police campaign against narcotics To mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, the city police have taken up an awareness campaign, which will not only include walkathons and events at schools and colleges, but also workshops about early intervention and rehabilitation of addicts. These workshops will feature experts and former addicts who have kicked the habit. This year's theme is titled: 'Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All'.

Five, including Nigerian nationals, held in Hyderabad drug bust
The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) and Golconda police arrested five drug peddlers, including two Nigerian nationals, and seized cocaine, ecstasy pills, and MDMA on Friday (June 13). The raid at a residence in Vinayak Nagar, Shaikpet, yielded 20 grams of cocaine, 45 grams of MDMA, 20 grams of ecstasy pills, ₹40,000 in cash and six mobile phones, Director of TGANB Sandeep Shandilya said. The arrested have been identified as 38-yearr-old Okoro Cosmos Ramsey and 44-year-old Chimezie Boniface Adikea, both Nigerian nationals residing in Hyderabad, 29-year-old Veerapalli Lakshmipathi, a native of Nalgonda, 40-year-old Romi Bharat Kalyani, from Goa and 26-year-old Abdul Jafar Khan alias Sharukh, of Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka. 'All five had earlier served time in Chanchalguda Central Prison, where they met and forged links in a shared barrack. Upon their release, they resumed drug trafficking by leveraging contacts across Mumbai, Goa and Bengaluru,' said the officer. He further explained that Cosmos and Adikea sourced cocaine and MDMA from a supplier named James in Mumbai and sold it to peddlers, including Lakshmipathi. 'Lakshmipathi, meanwhile, maintained ties with a broad network of dealers operating in Goa, Bengaluru, and Secunderabad, procuring various synthetic and chemical drugs such as OG weed, cocaine and MDMA,' Mr Shandilya added. The crackdown followed a tip-off that Lakshmipathi was headed to Cosmos's residence to collect cocaine and MDMA. Romi, who had travelled from Bengaluru with ecstasy pills and Jafar Khan, who also supplied drugs, were present when the police raided the premises. All five are reportedly part of a distribution chain catering to more than 25 consumers in Hyderabad. Notably, several of the accused are repeat offenders, with Cosmos linked to three NDPS Act cases, Lakshmipathi to eight, Romi to three, and both Jafar Khan and Adikea to two cases each. The authorities have urged the public to report drug-related activities through the helpline 1908 or via email at tsnabho-hyd@ Informant details, they assured, will remain confidential and credible leads will be rewarded.
