Amazon's Ring launches AI-generated security alerts

NBC News5 hours ago

Amazon 's Ring video doorbell division is rolling out AI-generated notifications alerting users to unusual or suspicious activity around their home, the company said Wednesday.
The tool uses artificial intelligence to generate text summaries of motion activity captured by Ring doorbells and cameras, which are then displayed as a phone notification. The summaries describe only the main subject that triggered the alert and are 'intentionally concise' so that users can quickly discern whether it's urgent, Ring said.
The feature is rolling out in beta starting Wednesday to Ring premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.
The Amazon division is launching the tool as part of a broader push by the doorbell maker into AI, Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff said in a release.
'We are just starting to scratch the surface of AI,' said Siminoff, who founded Ring in 2011.
Siminoff returned to run Ring in April after exiting in 2023. Amazon acquired Ring in 2018 for a reported $1 billion, giving it a stronger foothold in the smart home and home security categories.
Ring is primarily known for its connected doorbell devices, which allow users to record activity in front of their homes, though it has expanded to include a portfolio of products ranging from camera-equipped floodlights and alarm systems to flying security camera drones.
'I see unlimited potential for new experiences we can invent for our neighbors,' Siminoff said.
The company has long sparked controversy about privacy due to its controversial partnerships with hundreds of police departments across the U.S. Privacy advocates have expressed concern that the program, and Ring's accompanying Neighbors app, have heightened the risk of racial profiling and turned residents into informants, with few guardrails around how law enforcement can use the material.
Ring in 2024 removed a feature that allowed police to request footage from users directly.
Other tech companies have injected generative AI features in their products only to encounter flaws with the technology. In January, Apple disabled last year paused the rollout of its Gemini AI image generator after it produced 'inaccuracies' in historical pictures.

Dyson pet-hair vacuum with 'phenomenal suction power' now £100 off on Amazon

"This machine is a game changer. The suction, which can be adjusted, is phenomenal." Investing in the right hoover is an important choice for any household, especially those with pets. Unreliable vacuums are often easily broken, and usually don't do a good job at tackling pesky pet hair in the first place. But a top-rated hoover from winning brand Dyson is currently on a very generous offer on Amazon. Normally retailing at a pricy £279.99, the Dyson Ball Animal UP32 Vacuum Cleaner is currently on a 36 per cent discount, with a much lower price tag of £179.99. The corded vacuum can be used on all floor types, and has an impressive 4.3 star rating on Amazon out of a possible five. The gadget has been specifically engineered for homes with pets, and its powerful suction automatically de-tangles hair to prevent any jams in the vacuum. With a 60 per cent bigger bin than previous model the Ball Animal 2, it allows users to clean larger surface areas. While this hoover is not cordless, its 50-foot wire allows for unlimited cleaning, according to its product description. This powerful electric device uses 120 Volts and 700 watts to ensure a powerful full-house clean. Shark Lift-Away Anti Hair Wrap Corded Pet Vacuum Cleaner on Argos for a pricier £300, although it does come with a five-year warranty. Dyson Ball Animal UP32 Vacuum Cleaner £279.99 £179.99 Amazon Shop Product Description Shoppers looking for a more budget-friendly vacuum may opt for the Bush Bagless Cylinder Pet Corded Vacuum Cleaner, currently on a 20 per cent discount for just £70. But the Dyson option on Amazon is raking in some glowing reviews. One pleased shopper said: "I've tried many vacuum cleaners, but this one stands out. From the moment I opened the box, I could see the quality and care that went into making it. Its design is well-built, easy to assemble, and super user-friendly, making it a high-end product. "What impressed me is how simple it is to use. The vacuum worked perfectly, making my daily cleaning routine so much smoother. It also arrived quickly and was packed well. "After using it, I can honestly say this vacuum lives up to its promises. The suction power is fantastic, and compared to my old vacuum, this one is much lighter. Moving around while cleaning is easy, and I don't feel like dragging something heavy with me." But a less happy shopper said: "Dyson sent a new beater vacuum is junk. I have the beater head now falling off. I am past my return option as it is only 30 days. I should have ask for my money back and returned instead of having dyson send me a new head. "I am going to take this junk to a vacuum store and see if I am able to get a few dollars toward a different brand. Unless you enjoy constantly working on your vacuum do not buy. Yet another satisfied customer said: "Well, what can I say? This machine is a game changer. The suction, which can be adjusted, is phenomenal. It also has a head that is perfect for stairs that has brushes that pick up everything. I would highly recommend it." The Dyson vacuum can be purchased here. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Can Amazon shares deliver for you?

The activities of Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder and largest shareholder, including a multimillion-dollar wedding in Venice and ambitions to conquer space via Blue Origin, have more recently garnered more column inches for the American technology giant than its own performance. Yet equity markets are closely fixed on the prospect of sweeping global tariffs as a 90-day pause imposed by President Trump is set to end at the start of July. As a litmus test for confidence in the American economy, it is hardly surprising that Amazon's stock has been cast out of favour. An enterprise value of just over 13 times forecast adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and other items, about half that during the pandemic boom in online spending, but also close to the cheapest over the past decade.

Bezos arrives in Venice as local groups protest his forthcoming wedding

Multi-billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his bride-to-be Lauren Sanchez arrived in Venice on Wednesday ahead of their star-studded weekend wedding, an event that has sparked protest by a wide assortment of activist groups. Bezos waved from a water taxi as he and Sanchez arrived at the dock of the Aman Hotel, a five-star hotel on the Grand Canal, with two security boats in tow. The event has drawn protests by groups who view it as a sign of the growing disparity between the haves and have-nots, while residents complain it exemplifies the way their needs are disregarded in the era of mass tourism to the historic city. About a dozen Venetian organizations - including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups - have united to protest the multi-day event under the banner "No Space for Bezos," a play on words also referring to the bride's recent space have staged small-scale protests, unfurling anti-Bezos banners on iconic Venetian sites. They were joined on Monday by Greenpeace to unfurl a giant banner in St. Mark's Square protesting purported tax breaks for billionaires. There has been no comment from Bezos' representatives on the protests. The local activists had planned a more organised protest for Saturday, aiming to obstruct access to canals with boats to prevent guests from reaching a wedding venue. They modified the protest to a march from the train station after claiming a victory, asserting that their pressure forced organisers to change the venue to the Arsenale, a more easily secured site beyond Venice's congested centre. "It will be a strong, decisive protest, but peaceful,'' said Federica Toninello, an activist with the Social Housing Assembly network. "We want it to be like a party, with music, to make clear what we want our Venice to look like." Among the 200 guests confirmed to be attending the wedding are Mick Jagger, Ivanka Trump, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio.
