'The Simpsons' executive producer Matt Selman has spoken out about the surprising decision to 'kill off' Marge Simpson during a flashforward scene in the show's Season 36 finale.

Although the move caused major controversy within the hit cartoon's loyal fanbase, Selman slammed the backlash and claimed that it was 'ridiculous', The NY Post reports.
'Obviously, since 'The Simpsons' future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they're all different every time,' he told Variety during an interview published on Thursday, June 26.
'Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago,' Selman, 53, added. ''The Simpsons' doesn't even have canon!'
The episode in question, titled 'Estranger Things' and which aired on May 18, focuses on siblings Bart and Lisa Simpson as they slowly grow apart after they stop watching 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show' together.
Lisa and Bart found a letter from their mother, who it's confirmed has passed.
After a 35-year time jump, the audience learns that Marge has died, Bart and Lisa are estranged, and Homer Simpson, the family's dad, is living in a retirement home.

But viewers were not happy to learn that the show's creators 'killed off' Marge Simpson, and many took to social media to express their shock and outrage.
'I haven't even watched The Simpsons in 10+ years but they really killed MARGE?!' one person wrote on X after the episode aired.
'What's this I'm hearing they killed Marge Simpson off?' another fan added.
'Marge Simpson is dead?' a third critic commented. 'Utter woke nonsense!'
Surprisingly, Selman welcomed the backlash and claimed that it was further proof that 'The Simpsons' and its beloved characters are still relevant after 36 years on TV.
'I guess this speaks to the fact that people care about Marge,' he told Variety. 'At the end of the day, it's probably good for business even when these ridiculous, misleading stories go viral!'
'The Simpsons,' which premiered on Fox in 1989, remains the longest-running animated show on television.
Fox renewed the show, which has won 37 Emmys, for four more seasons in April.

'A gentleman went down and we thought, 'oh, just another fainter'. 'He lives by himself in a remote regional community, so he would never have made it to hospital himself had this not happened on the floor with our nurses and urgent medical care. 'We still get letters from him every month just saying, 'thank you so much, I wouldn't be alive without you.'' In the interview, Denyer also answered a series of rapid fire questions about other Aussie celebrities he's worked with. When asked to name the funniest star, Denyer named Amanda Keller. Most intimidating? 'Kochie,' Denyer replied. The TV host named Larry Emdur as the most down to earth celebrity, saying, 'there's not a bloke that would do more for others.' 'He (Emdur) sat by my bedside when I broke my back … and he sang to me. I wish he didn't because he's not very good,' Denyer laughed. And when asked to name the biggest diva he's worked with, Denyer reluctantly named Kyle Sandilands. 'I've never seen a bloke absolutely want to throw his furniture around the green room when his KFC hadn't arrived,' Denyer laughed. He then complimented the KIIS FM radio star, calling him 'a real teddy bear'. 'When you crack through that extremely hard shell, there is a real softie inside. It takes a lot of work to get there, but when you do, he's surprisingly tender.' AC/DC sets new Aussie box office record with Power Up shows

Yet we keep lining up in those virtual queues, often for hours, to secure the prize, with AC/DC fans breaking Ticketek's record for a music tour's first day sale last week. Fans who made it out of the 'lounge' to the checkout snapped up 320,000 tickets to the band's Power Up concerts in November and December. That first day of sales last Thursday eclipsed the band's previous record of 240,000 tickets for the Black Ice tour in 2009, which was the previous biggest concert on-sale day in Ticketek's history. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY The huge demand to welcome AC/DC back to Australia's stadiums after a decade's absence was funnelled into the general sale as the egalitarian rockers are old school and don't do ticket pre-sales, preferring everyone gets an equal shot. Most stadium-sized tours – think box office slayers Ed Sheeran, P!nk and Taylor Swift – offer promoter, credit card and telco-affiliated pre-sales over multiple days before the general sale. Or the artists add extra shows that go on sale at a later date. As the AC/DC shows went on sale – at staggered times for each city's gig to spread the online traffic across the day – 'second and final' concerts were added to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and immediately available to purchase. 'It was an absolute nightmare getting tickets during the Ashes pre-sale, but I had no issues with AC/DC today,' one fan posted. But it was an infuriating experience for a raft of hopeful ticket buyers who made it through only to be booted to the back of queue when they pressed the pay button. 'Selected tickets for AC/DC, hit pay, got punted back to the lounge behind 50,000 other people. ridiculous,' an irate fan wrote. Ticketek advised fans ahead of the AC/DC sale to disable VPNs or IP-masking tools as 'your unique IP helps us confirm you're a real person, not a bot.' This past summer saw the highest live event sales in nearly a decade, with two million Australians buying tickets. The box office agency achieved another record last Thursday with over 370,000 tickets moved in a single day, setting a new all-time high for daily sales and surpassing the previous record set during The Ashes on-sale earlier this month.
