The Calgary Flames have signed forward Martin Pospisil to a three-year contract extension worth $7.5 million, his agent Dan Milstein confirmed. The deal carries an average annual value of $2.5 million and begins in the 2026–27 season.
Pospisil, who was set to enter the final year of his previous contract, will now bypass restricted free agency next summer, keeping him under Calgary's control through the 2028–29 season.
Calgary Flames lock in Martin Pospisil with long-term contract after strong 2024–25 NHL season
The 25-year-old Slovak forward played a key role for the Flames throughout the 2024–25 season, recording 25 points (4 goals, 21 assists) in 81 games while finishing third in the NHL with 301 hits. His physical edge remained intact, but Pospisil showed marked improvement in his discipline, cutting his penalty minutes from 109 in his rookie campaign to 84.
He averaged 13:48 of ice time per game, earning brief power-play minutes in a net-front role and also seeing expanded usage at center. Pospisil won 40.8% of his 174 faceoffs, respectable for a player transitioning from the wing. With little change expected in the Flames' forward group heading into the 2025–26 season, he's projected to continue in a similar bottom-six role as his current $1 million cap hit remains in effect for one more year.

Key Flames players still unsigned as Calgary prioritizes Martin Pospisil extension
While Pospisil's new deal reflects his value as a reliable, energy-driven forward, the timing of the extension has raised eyebrows. Restricted free agent Connor Zary remains unsigned for the upcoming season, and other key names, center Mikael Backlund, defenseman Rasmus Andersson, and goalie Dustin Wolf will all need new deals for 2026–27.
Andersson, in particular, could be a trade candidate if no progress is made, while Wolf's future looms large given his rising profile as a potential starting goaltender.
Even so, locking in Pospisil signals Calgary's intent to preserve roster continuity and reward players who bring consistent effort and edge.
The Flames have made a clear vote of confidence in Martin Pospisil, securing him for the long term after back-to-back impactful seasons. With other major contract decisions ahead, Calgary's front office is banking on internal development and Pospisil's evolving game to keep the franchise competitive.
FAQs:
1. When does Martin Pospisil's new contract start?
The extension begins in the 2026–27 NHL season.
2. What nationality is Martin Pospisil?
He is Slovakian.

India football coach announced! Khalid Jamil is 1st Indian coach in 13 yrs

Khalid Jamil was officially named head coach of the Indian men's national football team on Friday, making history as the first Indian to hold the post in over a decade. Jamil was chosen ahead of Stephen Constantine and Slovakia's former manager Stefan Tarkovic, following a comprehensive selection process by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The last Indian to coach the national team was Savio Medeira, who held the role from 2011 to 2012. Jamil, 48, rose to prominence in Indian football circles after leading underdog Aizawl FC to a fairytale I-League title win in the 2016-17 season. Currently managing Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), he now faces the formidable challenge of reviving a struggling national side that has recently slumped in form and results. An ex-India international himself, Jamil was the preferred choice of the AIFF Executive Committee after being shortlisted by the Technical Committee, headed by Indian football legend IM Vijayan. Constantine, who previously served as India's head coach, and Tarkovic, with experience managing the Slovakian national team, were also in contention. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed Jamil's appointment but noted that the exact length of his tenure is still under discussion. "Jamil has asked for a three-year deal, but some members suggested a one or two-year term. What's certain is it will be long-term and performance-driven," Chaubey told PTI. Importantly, unlike his predecessor Manolo Marquez, who balanced national duties with a club role at FC Goa, Jamil will be fully dedicated to the national team. 'Jamil will only serve as the national team coach,' Chaubey emphasized. First Assignment: CAFA Nations Cup Jamil's first test in his new role will be the CAFA Nations Cup, scheduled to begin on August 29 in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India's performance in that tournament will be crucial preparation ahead of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, where the team is at risk of elimination following a recent 0-1 defeat to Hong Kong. India will play Singapore home and away on October 9 and 14 in those crucial qualifiers. A Proven Track Record Jamil's coaching journey is defined by overachievement. Aside from his legendary I-League triumph with Aizawl FC on a modest ₹2 crore budget, he guided both NorthEast United (2020-21) and Jamshedpur FC (2024-25) to the ISL playoffs, a rare feat for clubs often overlooked in the title race. His coaching credentials also include an AFC Pro License, and he has twice won the AIFF Men's Coach of the Year award (2023–24 and 2024–25). Support for an Indian Coach Jamil's appointment was strongly backed by prominent figures within Indian football. Technical Committee Chair IM Vijayan and Vice Chair Shabir Ali, along with former India coach and current AIFF advisor Armando Colaco, all advocated for giving an Indian coach a chance. 'Vijayan felt that the national team had performed better under Indian coaches in the past, such as Sukhwinder Singh and Syed Nayeemuddin,' the AIFF said in an official statement. 'He strongly recommended Jamil, citing his domestic achievements and recent accolades.' Other ExCo members including former players Climax Lawrence, Pinky Bompal Magar, and Thongam Tababi Devi also lent their support to the idea of appointing a homegrown coach. Though some members proposed a return for Constantine, the final decision swung in Jamil's favor due to his familiarity with Indian players and his current involvement in the domestic football scene, a key consideration with important fixtures approaching. The AIFF reportedly received over 170 applications for the position, with high-profile names such as former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell also in the mix. Now, all eyes will be on Khalid Jamil as he begins his mission to rejuvenate Indian football on the international stage.

IND vs ENG 5th Test: Will Chris Woakes bat like Rishabh Pant did in the Old Trafford?

Chris Woakes of England (Photo by) Chris Woakes is unlikely to take further part in the ongoing fifth Test against India at The Oval after sustaining a shoulder injury on Day 1. The England all-rounder landed awkwardly while diving to save a boundary late on Thursday and was seen clutching his left shoulder in pain. He walked off the field with his arm in a sling and did not return. On Friday morning, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Woakes is expected to play no further part in the match, though he will continue to be monitored through the remainder of the Test. A final assessment will be made after the series ends. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! While the ECB statement did not fully rule out the possibility of Woakes batting, his current condition suggests it is highly unlikely unless the situation demands a one-handed or heavily restricted appearance, similar to Rishabh Pant 's brave innings on one foot in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. India vs England weather, rain forecast: Why bad news for India from The Oval As of now, England are preparing to continue without him, meaning they will have to rely on just three specialist bowlers for the rest of the game. Poll What do you expect from England's bowling attack without Woakes? They will struggle They will perform well It will be unpredictable His absence is a major blow to England, especially with the series hanging in the balance at 2-2. On a rain-hit Day 1, India posted 204 for 6 after being put under pressure by the seam-friendly conditions. Karun Nair led the resistance with an unbeaten 52 while Washington Sundar was on 19 at stumps. For England, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson picked up two wickets each. IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah released from squad during final Test at The Oval

India bowler Jasprit Bumrah (Photo by) Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the ongoing fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, London, the BCCI confirmed on Friday. This was a pre-planned move as part of India's workload management policy. Head coach Gautam Gambhir had stated before the series began that Bumrah would play only three of the five Tests. The fast bowler featured in the first, third and fourth Tests, and sat out the second and now the final match. He ends his campaign with 14 wickets at an average of 26. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! India's updated squad includes: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja , Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, and N Jagadeesan (wk). India vs England weather, rain forecast: Why bad news for India from The Oval On the field, India endured a testing first day in overcast and seaming conditions. They finished on 204 for 6 in 64 overs after rain curtailed two sessions. Karun Nair, brought back into the side after being dropped for the fourth Test, stood firm with an unbeaten 52. His knock came under immense pressure and on a pitch that offered significant help to England's pacers. Washington Sundar (19*) was alongside Nair at stumps, steadying the innings after India lost three wickets in the final session. Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) fell early, while Gill was run out for 21 after a mix-up. Still, the Indian captain made history by overtaking Sunil Gavaskar's record of 732 runs in a single Test series by an Indian captain. Gill now has 733 runs with one innings left to play. Sai Sudharsan, playing just his second Test, looked composed for his 38 but edged one that moved away from Josh Tongue. Ravindra Jadeja also fell to Tongue, nicking off for 9. Gus Atkinson, playing his first Test of the series, impressed with the ball and picked up two wickets. England, however, suffered a blow late in the day as Chris Woakes walked off the field clutching his shoulder after a fielding attempt, making his participation for the rest of the Test uncertain. With the series tied at 2-2, this final match remains finely balanced, and much will depend on how India's lower order bats on Day 2.
