Lions GM Brad Holmes: Isaac TeSlaa 'was my favorite WR in 2025 NFL Draft'

Fox Sports30-04-2025
The Detroit Lions made a bold move in the 2025 NFL Draft, trading pick No. 102 and both of their 2026 third-round picks to the Jacksonville Jaguars for picks No. 70, 182 and a fixture sixth-rounder to select Arkansas wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa.
What stands out about TeSlaa to Lions general manager Brad Holmes?
"The pick that was probably the most questioned, I would say, was Isaac TeSlaa. I can say that he was my favorite wide receiver in this draft," Holmes said in an interview with 97.1 The Ticket on Tuesday. "I'm not saying he was the best wide receiver in the draft, but favorite wide receiver in the draft, yes."
Why did Holmes execute a trade-up for TeSlaa?
"When you look at the past two or three drafts, including this one, it has not been the same depth of talent," Holmes said. "So this year, last year, the year before, you don't find an Alim McNeill in the third round, you don't find an Amon-Ra St. Brown in the fourth. Those guys just aren't there as of recent. …
"If we stay here [at No. 102], we're going to be dealing with a different level of player, based on our board. Not on the 31 other boards, but based on our board."
TeSlaa, who played quarterback in high school, played three seasons at Division II Hillsdale (2020-22) before transferring to play for Arkansas. Last season (2024), he totaled 28 receptions for 545 yards (19.5 yards per reception) and three touchdowns. Across his two seasons with the Razorbacks, TeSlaa averaged 31 receptions for 448 yards (14.5 yards per reception) and three touchdowns per year and wasn't credited for a single dropped pass.
TeSlaa joins a Lions wide receiver room that includes St. Brown, a two-time All-Pro, and Jameson Williams, who totaled 1,001 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 17.3 yards per reception last season. This group will be coached by a new offensive coordinator in former Denver Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton, as Ben Johnson left Detroit to become the new head coach of the NFC North-rival Chicago Bears.
As for the rest of the draft, Detroit primarily addressed the trenches on both sides of the ball. At pick No. 28, the Lions selected Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams. Then, on Day 2, they drafted Georgia offensive lineman Tate Ratledge at pick No. 57 before trading up for TeSlaa (No. 70). On Day 3, the Lions added LSU guard Miles Frazier (No. 171), Boise State defensive end Ahmed Hassanein (No. 196), Georgia defensive back Dan Jackson (No. 230) and Georgia wide receiver Dominic Lovett (No. 244).
TeSlaa grew up in Hudsonville, Michigan, which is located roughly two-and-a-half hours west of Detroit.

4 logical Trey Hendrickson trade destinations as Bengals ponder deal

Superstar pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson's contract situation with the Cincinnati Bengals seems to have reached a point of no return. After months of little to no meaningful negotiating progress, which has included plenty of passive-aggressive swipes from Hendrickson, the Bengals appear ready to give up on the entire process. On Sunday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that while the Bengals aren't actively shopping Hendrickson in trades just yet, they are taking calls and seeing what they could potentially receive for him on the open market. Needless to say, that is a huge step forward with someone like Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks last year and ostensibly still has plenty left in the tank at age 30. In the interest of providing a clean off-ramp for both Hendrickson and the Bengals, here are four NFL teams that might make the most sense in possible trades for the powerful EDGE player. 1. Detroit Lions The Lions are lucky. Even after losing both their offensive and defensive coordinators in the offseason, Detroit still has one of the NFL's most complete rosters. That is, well, aside from a bona fide complementary pass-rusher alongside franchise player Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions' EDGE depth behind Hutchinson features names like Marcus Davenport and Al-Quadin Muhammad, which isn't awful, but it's also not ideal for a team that views itself as a Super Bowl contender. Throw a dynamic field-tilter like Hendrickson into this mix instead, and I'm not sure the Lions would have a real on-paper weakness. 2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fresh off their fourth consecutive NFC South division championship, it still feels like the Buccaneers are missing something. Yes, they have the ostensible franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield. Yes, they've still got difference-makers like the always-reliable pass Mike Evans and perennial All-Pro tackle Tristan Wirfs. But this was a team with a bottom-four pass defense last year. That's what happens when you don't really have any proven pass-rushers bending the pocket. Enter Hendrickson, someone who opposing offensive coordinators would actually have to gameplan for. I wouldn't envy anyone having to choose between giving Hendrickson or Vita Vea extra attention. 3. Washington Commanders For the time being, it feels like the Commanders have bigger fish to fry with the awkward Terry McLaurin situation. You don't mess around with Jayden Daniels' top playmaker going into a pivotal second year, you know? However, if they were to resolve their dispute with McLaurin any time soon, that's when it would be a great time to get greedy. That's when it'd be time to secure a true EDGE talisman for a Washington defense that was mostly mediocre last year. The Commanders haven't had that type of guy coming off the end of the offensive formation since Montez Sweat and Jonathan Allen. They're going to need someone like Hendrickson to take the next step and ensure that their marvelous 2024 campaign wasn't a one-off fluke. 4. Chicago Bears The Bears seem like they're brewing something special. They've got Caleb Williams under the tutelage of the much-acclaimed Ben Johnson. They've got a cadre of offensive weapons headlined by promising young receiver Rome Odunze. They even have the respected Dennis Allen leading a defensive unit with one of the more underrated cores in pro football. What the Bears are missing, though, is someone offenses have to fear up front outside of Montez Sweat. As it stands, it's rather simple to scheme Sweat out and dare any of the Bears' other pass-rushers to beat you. This would not be the case with Hendrickson, to say the least. What other NFL teams could trade for Trey Hendrickson? The New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, who are at two different points in their respective rebuilds around Drake Maye and Cam Ward, could also be in the mix for Hendrickson. However, it's worth noting that the Bengals are much more likely to trade Hendrickson out of the AFC rather than to any potential conference rival in the middle of his prime.

Alabama RB Jam Miller reportedly likely to miss season opener vs. Florida State with upper-body injury

Alabama running back Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury during Saturday's scrimmage and underwent a procedure for the issue, head coach Kalen DeBoer announced in a statement on Sunday. 'Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday's scrimmage and went in for a procedure on Saturday evening," DeBoer wrote. "Jam should recover fully with a timetable for his return yet to be determined.' The injury is expected to sideline Miller for the Crimson Tide's Aug. 30 season opener at Florida State, ESPN's Mark Schlabach reports. Alabama hosts Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 6 and Wisconsin on Sept. 13 before a bye week. The Tide will then open their SEC schedule on Sept. 27 at No. 5 Georgia. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Miller, 21, is the Tide's leading returning rusher as a senior, running for 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries last season. He also tallied 16 receptions for 155 yards and a score. With Miller sidelined, sophomore running backs Richard Young and Daniel Hill are expected to carry the rushing load. Young ran for 146 yards and 2 TDs on 27 carries last season, while Hill rushed for 61 yards and a TD on 21 attempts. Alabama also added transfer Dre Washington, who ran for 478 yards with 107 receiving yards for Louisiana in 2024. Freshmen AK Dear and Kevin Riley could also be in the mix. Last season's second-leading rusher among Alabama running backs, Justice Haynes, transferred to Michigan. QB Jalen Milroe led the Crimson Tide with 726 yards and 20 TDs before he became a third-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Alabama is ranked No. 8 in the AP preseason college football Top 25, which was released last Monday. Last season, the Crimson Tide finished 9-4 in DeBoer's first season as head coach, succeeding the legendary Nick Saban.

Dolphins PFF grades: Best and worst performers vs. Lions

The Miami Dolphins erased a halftime deficit and came away with a 24-17 win against the Detroit Lions in a preseason matchup Saturday. With starters for both squads watching from the sideline -- including the Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa, De'Von Achane, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle -- it was the backups' time to shine. Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers took advantage of the opportunity, leading the Dolphins to a come-from-behind win with three scoring drives after halftime. Veteran Zach Wilson struggled to get things going in the first half. So who stood out most?
