Texas Tech prepares for top-seeded Florida in Elite Eight at Chase Center

CBS News29-03-2025
As gratifying as it was to engineer a memorable March Madness comeback, Texas Tech knows there's an even tougher task ahead if the Red Raiders want to reach the Final Four.
Standing in Texas Tech's way is one of the deepest and most complete teams in the country in a matchup against top-seeded Florida in the West Region final on Saturday.
The third-seeded Red Raiders (28-8) earned the matchup against the Gators (33-4) by
erasing a 13-point deficit in the final five minutes of regulation before winning 85-83 in overtime
in the Sweet 16.
"In the moment it was the craziest feeling," guard Christian Anderson said Friday. "Just coming back and the fans and the whole environment. It's a surreal feeling. You got to have a quick recovery time because in this type of tournament you play almost the next day. So just having that on-to-the-next-game mindset from here."
After guard Elijah Higgins played all 45 minutes Thursday night and four other Red Raiders had more than 37 minutes of game action, coach Grant McCasland took it easy on Friday with a light practice.
But he wasn't overly concerned about any lingering effects come Saturday.
"Adrenaline takes over when you play in these games," McCasland said. ""There's enough time in between games, it's not like conference tournament where you turn around and play in less than 24 hours. I think that's huge for us. We would prefer more rest. But with our team, there's enough grit in our locker room to be prepared for the next one."
The Gators had it much easier Thursday night
when they pulled away from Maryland for an 87-71 victory
. That allowed coach Todd Golden to rely heavily on his deep rotation that featured six players scoring in double figures.
"We're strength in numbers, similar to the Warriors used to say back in the day," he said. "That's our team as well. Having those four bigs out there playing consistent minutes is really important to us."
The Gators have made it to the Elite Eight despite not playing a complete game in the first three rounds. They stumbled for stretches in the first weekend against Norfolk State and UConn before surviving a sloppy first half against Maryland.
They want to get back to the dominant form they showed when they rolled through the Southeastern Conference Tournament, winning three games by an average of more than 14 points.
"There's definitely a better version out there of us," All-America guard Walter Clayton Jr. said. "It's going to come sooner or later. So just got to finally get back on the same page as each other and get back to the way that we play."
Both teams excelled on the boards in the Sweet 16, with one memorable stretch by Texas Tech. The Red Raiders got seven offensive rebounds on one trip, including four by Federiko Federiko before a putback that helped fuel the comeback.
"I think that was really the big turning point in the game," forward Darrion Williams said.
The Red Raiders had 22 offensive rebounds leading to 16 points in all against Arkansas to go with a plus-12 rebounding margin. Florida grabbed 15 offensive boards leading to 21 points and outrebounded Maryland 42-20.
The Gators have been one of the best teams all season on offensive rebounds, ranking sixth in the country with 12.5 per game and fourth with 15.6 second-chance points per game.
Florida struggled to protect the ball in the first half on Thursday night with 13 turnovers in what has been an issue in recent games. The Gators did a much better job protecting the ball in the second half with only four turnovers and will look to replicate that against Texas Tech.
"You saw the end result," reserve Thomas Haugh said. "That's the brand of basketball we need to play."
The Red Raiders are still holding out hope that leading 3-point shooter Chance McMillian can return from an oblique injury that has sidelined him since the Big 12 Tournament. McMillian was expected to take part in a light shootaround on Friday and a decision on his status won't be made until Saturday.
"Hopefully we'll get him back in some way," McCasland said. "But it's hard to say until we get closer to game time and he warms up and see how he feels."
The Gators avoided a scare when big man Alex Condon re-injured his right ankle that sidelined him earlier this season. Condon was able to return for the second half and is on target to play Saturday. Condon has been getting treatment and didn't practice Friday to rest the ankle.

2025 Florida Football Predictions: Gators Ranked 21st in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

College Football 2025 Florida Football Predictions: Gators Ranked 21st in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:02 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Florida lands in my Ultimate 136. Florida Gators ranking: 21 Last year's ranking: 43 Top player: QB DJ Lagway: Went 6-1 as a starter last season, tying Chris Leak for the most wins as a true freshman QB in Florida history; led all FBS true freshmen with a 154.9 passer rating (min. 150 attempts). [Florida's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: It's really simple for the Gators. If they play the entire 2025 season like they played the last three games of 2024 to mount an eight-win season with two top 25 and SEC mascots to taxidermy and nail to the wall, then Florida can and should win 10 games for the first time in the Billy Napier era. Remember, there were two ranked wins at the end of their schedule and the Gators damn near knocked off Georgia in "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party." ADVERTISEMENT Lagway, all 6-foot-3, 239 pounds of him, ought to be ready to drive a fast car down the straights of its non-conference schedule and can be tossed into corners for the wheel-to-wheel combat that is the SEC slate. The Gators went 6-0 when Lagway started and finished each game. Early on the throttle, late on the brakes and steal their racing line, Florida. Let me see what you can do with this car shaped like a hungry rapier, Napier. At 19-19 through three seasons, he needs to win big this season. Spurs' Carter Bryant volunteered at a back-to-school event in San Antonio

A post shared by Spurs Way (@spursway) San Antonio Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant was among the players who volunteered at a back-to-school event on Sunday, benefiting the local youth in the community. Bryant was joined by teammate Luke Kornet at the event, which assisted with school supplies, health screenings and enrollment. They were pictured passing out paper, binders, hats and other related materials while providing positive interactions with the children and adults in attendance. The offseason period is an excellent chance for incoming rookies to get to know their respective markets and communities. He also recently volunteered with Dylan Harper and Riley Minix by serving food at Haven for Hope, a homeless shelter. Bryant helped Arizona to the Sweet 16 last season, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant appears to have ingratiated himself well within the local community after joining the organization in June. He has had the opportunity to give back and likely picked up some new fans along the way.

College Football 2025 Texas Tech Football Predictions: Red Raiders Ranked 22nd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:12 p.m. Here is a look at where Texas Tech lands in my Ultimate 136. Texas Tech Red Raiders ranking: 22 Last year's ranking: 34 Top player: Edge David Bailey: Spent three seasons at Stanford, most notably recording 7 sacks and 5 forced fumbles; his 5 forced fumbles ranked fourth in FBS, and his 93.2 PFF pass rush grade led all players in FBS. [Texas Tech's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: After watching Arizona State go from 3-9 to Big 12 champion and CFP selectee, Texas Tech is right to think, "Why not us?" Despite leading the Big 12 in points per game (37.8) and yards per game (462.8), Tech finished 8-5 in 2024. It has decided to go for broke to win the league in 2025. Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders reportedly spent $10 million in NIL money to acquire 17 players during the winter transfer window with an emphasis on front-loading contracts in anticipation of the House v. NCAA settlement that would cap earnings for players. ADVERTISEMENT The result was adding former USC running back Quinten Joyner and former Houston tackle Howard Sampson, who stands 6-foot-8, 325 pounds, among others, in a push to win the Big 12 Championship in 2025 to properly christen its new $242 million Womble Football Center. The gambit isn't new. Ole Miss tried it and failed. But with billionaires behind the money, like Cody Campbell, it's a bet worth placing for a program in Lubbock that wants to become as successful as its most successful former player in Patrick Mahomes and become known for winning championships. Though coordinators Mack Leftwich and Shiel Wood are new to the Red Raiders, 13 players are set to return as starters. The 13 transfers McGuire brought in include former Stanford edge David Bailey, who reportedly signed a $2 million deal to play in Lubbock, Texas.
