Amateur and professional
The GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025 is open to amateur and professional photographers and videographers who are residents of South Africa, with the submission period closing on 31 August 2025.
The award recipients will be announced in January 2026, with the final projects to be exhibited in various countries as well as on the fujifilm-x.com website.
What to shoot?
Windvogel was announced as a Global Grant recipient for her project 'The Body at Risk'. The project was a harrowing look at the landscapes in South Africa where incidents of gender-based violence took place.
'Start with a strong concept that is close to your heart – one that is well-researched, timely and meaningful. Ask yourself: why this story, why now and why you? Let your proposal reflect your commitment and the urgency of the narrative,' Windvogel said.
'The panel is not just looking for beautiful images; they're looking for work that moves, educates and sparks dialogue. Be honest, passionate and prepared to immerse yourself in the process.'
Photographers and videographers looking to enter the GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025 are able to do so until 31 August 2025.

Recipe of the day: Passion fruit cheesecake for National Cheesecake Day

Join us in celebrating National Cheesecake Day on 30 July 2025 with our special recipe of the day – because South Africans love their cheesecake too. Cheesecake in all its guises – baked, not baked, chocolate, Basque, New York-style, topped with whipped cream, fruits or coulis, on a short crust pastry or biscuit crumb base is the perfect treat for afternoon tea or morning coffee. You just can't go wrong with this delicious, creamy cake. Time Square's Sous Chef Cynthia Supplied Time Square's Sous Chef Cynthia Bombe has shared her speciality in honour of National Cheesecake Day in the US, although you can indulge in the passion fruit cheesecake any time you please. 'When I was a child growing up in Diepkloof, Soweto, I used to help my mom bake scones and jam tarts, which she sold. So that is where my passion for baking comes from, and I decided to pursue it as a career,' says Bombe, who holds a chef's certificate in Food Preparation from the HTA School of Culinary Art. 'I love pastry, it is my passion. I didn't have any experience when I joined Time Square, I had to adapt and fell in love with it. You have to be patient working in this part of the kitchen.' Bombe paid tribute to Time Square's executive sous chef, Nonkosi Vellem, 'who showed me almost everything I know'. Today, Bombe is a supervisor, working with banqueting, sometimes preparing up to 1 000 plates at a time. 'I oversee functions, making sure the food is out on time and that there are no complaints. I have to delegate to the junior chefs and also manage orders to ensure stock continuity.' Calitzdorp man aims to braai his way to a Guinness World Record

Calitzdorp braai enthusiast Gielie Basson is preparing to fire up the coals as he sets his sights on breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous braai. Scheduled to run from 24 to 28 September 2025, the event aims to hit the 100-hour mark, surpassing the current record of 80 hours, which was set by fellow South African Jan Greeff in 2014. This will be Basson's second official attempt. In 2023, he braaied for more than 84 hours, but a technical glitch with timekeeping disqualified the effort. 'In 2023, I tried, but Guinness World Records said that trying is the best gun. I didn't get the record, and that's why I'm going to try one last time in September,' Basson said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by GielieBraai (@gieliebraai) Beyond the record attempt, Basson is using the event to galvanise community spirit. He is encouraging South Africans to support the cause in their own way – whether in Calitzdorp or from their homes. 'They can braai boerewors, make hotdogs, and sell them. The profits can be donated to my charity, Gamka Oos Primary School, or to a charity of their choice,' he said. Known for its wine farms and scenic beauty, Calitzdorp is hoping to benefit from the publicity surrounding the event. Basson believes his attempt can help spotlight the town's charm and community warmth. 'Join us in Calitzdorp in support of my record attempt or braai at your home, and let's show the world how South Africa's 'ubuntu' really works,' he urged. Basson and his team are working closely with event coordinators and Guinness World Records officials to ensure all regulations are met this time around, including timekeeping, food safety, and rest periods. Whether or not the record is broken, the fire of community and charity will keep burning – just the way Gielie Basson likes it.
