UN Chief Calls for Reparatory Justice, Greater Global Inclusion on Africa Day 2025

On the occasion of Africa Day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a powerful message recognizing Africa's dynamic potential while urging the international community to confront historic injustices and support inclusive, sustainable development across the continent.
'Africa is rich in heritage, vibrant in diversity, and remarkable in its contributions to our global community,' Guterres said in his statement. He highlighted the continent's rapidly growing youth population and its emergence as a leader in renewable energy and technological innovation.
Yet, he cautioned, Africa continues to endure the enduring consequences of slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and systemic racism. These legacies, the Secretary-General said, have left deep scars and perpetuated inequality for Africans and people of African descent worldwide.
The 2025 Africa Day theme calls for confronting these shameful legacies. In response, Guterres renewed his call for 'reparatory justice that is grounded in accountability, reconciliation, and equity.'
He also drew attention to the "Pact for the Future", adopted in September 2024, as a framework for global reform that includes enhanced African representation in global decision-making bodies such as the UN Security Council and a restructured international financial system that prioritizes debt relief and sustainable financing for African nations.
The Pact also includes the "Global Digital Compact", a major initiative to bridge the digital divide and promote the ethical use of artificial intelligence—measures the Secretary-General emphasized as vital for Africa's equitable integration into the global economy.
Praising Africa's leadership in regional cooperation, Guterres pointed to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a transformative opportunity for economic integration and growth. 'At a time when barriers are being erected, Africa leads by example,' he said.
He called for continued global support in Africa's clean energy transition, emphasizing that the continent must be the primary beneficiary of its own critical mineral resources—essential to the global shift toward renewable energy.
Reaffirming the UN's commitment to peace and security in Africa, Guterres pledged to continue supporting efforts to 'silence the guns, tackle terrorism, and safeguard human rights for all.'
'On this Africa Day, let us recommit to not only addressing past wrongs, but also to building a sustainable future for the people of Africa grounded in peace, dignity, and opportunity for all,' the Secretary-General concluded.

Egypt's FM holds separate phone calls with Nigerian, Cypriot counterparts
CAIRO – June 7, 2025: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Saturday with his counterparts from Nigeria and Cyprus, as part of Egypt's ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate on regional developments. Egypt–Nigeria Relations In his call with Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty praised the long-standing and distinguished relations between Egypt and Nigeria. He expressed his aspiration to deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic, trade, and investment sectors—with special emphasis on agriculture. The Egyptian Minister highlighted the growing presence and activity of Egyptian companies across Africa and voiced interest in exploring new investment opportunities through joint ventures that bring mutual benefit. The two ministers exchanged views on current developments across the African continent, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and coordination within the African Union to promote peace and security—especially in the Sahel region. Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's readiness to support Nigeria in combating terrorism and extremism, underlining Egypt's willingness to assist through capacity building initiatives and educational cooperation, including support from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in countering extremist ideologies. The discussion also covered developments in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Gaza. Abdelatty outlined Egypt's efforts to secure a ceasefire and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, strongly condemning Israel's continued violations of international and humanitarian law, and its policies against Palestinian civilians. He emphasized the need for urgent international action to end the war and ensure humanitarian access. Strengthening Egypt–Cyprus Ties Separately, Minister Abdelatty received a phone call from Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, as part of the ongoing dialogue aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchanging perspectives on regional issues. Abdelatty reaffirmed the historical and friendly ties between Egypt and Cyprus and expressed Egypt's keenness to expand cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and employment. He also emphasized the importance of continuing collaboration on facilitating Egyptian labor in Cyprus. The Egyptian minister expressed appreciation for Cyprus's continued support for Egypt within the European Union, especially concerning the European financial assistance package allocated to Egypt. The two ministers also reviewed regional and international developments of mutual concern, with a special focus on the Gaza crisis. Abdelatty briefed his Cypriot counterpart on Egypt's diplomatic and humanitarian efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire and ensuring aid delivery. Both sides agreed on the importance of continued coordination to de-escalate tensions and support regional stability and security.

Egypt welcomes ILO resolution granting observer status to Palestine
Egyptian and Palestinian flags CAIRO – June 7, 2025: Egypt's Ministry of Labor has welcomed the decision by the General Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to grant the State of Palestine observer status within the organization. The resolution was overwhelmingly adopted, with 386 votes in favor, 15 against, and 42 abstentions, marking a significant step forward for Palestinian representation in international labor affairs. Egyptian Minister of Labor Mohammad Jubran extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Palestinian delegation—comprising representatives of the government, employers, and workers—on this historic milestone. He praised the ILO's decision to grant Palestine "non-member observer state" status, describing it as a just and overdue recognition. The resolution was adopted during a plenary session on Friday, June 6, as part of the 113th Session of the International Labor Conference, held in Geneva from June 2 to 13, 2025. Minister Jubran delivered Egypt's official statement in support of the resolution during the plenary session on Thursday at the United Nations Palace. In his remarks, he welcomed the adoption of what he described as a 'historic resolution,' noting its alignment with the United Nations General Assembly resolution of May 10, 2024. UN Member States to Adopt Voluntary Political Declaration to Solve Marine Crisis
Rana Atef More than 2,000 scientists and advocates from at least 100 countries participated in the One Ocean Science Congress, dedicated to the increasing marine crisis. 'The ocean is suffering at the cause of humanity,' said the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who spoke at the opening ceremony on Tuesday. She added, 'Either we save our oceans or the entire race will pay.' Rising sea temperatures due to global warming, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, and offshore oil and gas developments are some of the threats plaguing the ocean. 'Sound research shows global human health is intrinsically linked to a healthy ocean,' said Peter Thomson, the United Nations secretary-general's special envoy for the ocean. The ocean greatly contributes to producing more than half of the oxygen humans breathe, in addition to balancing Earth temperatures by absorbing excess heat and carbon dioxide. 3 billion people depend on the ocean for their daily activities, according to the United Nations. But, at the congress's opening ceremony, Thomson said, 'the ocean's health is currently, measurably in decline.' Now is the time to chart a new future for the ocean, he said. 'Faith has been placed upon this congress to serve as the scientific pillar of the U.N. Ocean Conference,' said Thomson. He added: 'We're expecting that the scientifically compiled conclusions of this congress will inform the leaders and the representatives of governments and civil society who will be attending the conference.'
