Pal was expelled for 'anti-party activities and indiscipline' after praising CM Yogi Adityanath for ensuring justice for her and her slain husband
The Samajwadi Party on Thursday expelled its MLA Pooja Pal for 'anti-party activities and indiscipline", just a day after she publicly praised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his zero-tolerance policy on crime. The move, announced in a statement signed by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, accused Pal of repeatedly indulging in actions that 'caused great damage to the party" despite prior warnings.
Pal's expulsion comes in the wake of a dramatic moment in the ongoing Monsoon Session, when during its 18th hour of debate she stunned the Assembly by thanking the chief minister for 'burying her husband's killer into the ground"—a reference to mafia-politician Atiq Ahmed, accused of masterminding the 2005 murder of her husband, BSP legislator Raju Pal.
'Everyone knows how my husband was killed and who did it," she told the House. 'I want to thank the chief minister, who listened to me when no one else did. He gave justice to many women like me in Prayagraj and punished the criminals. Today, the entire state looks at the chief minister with confidence." Switching briefly to Hindi, she added: 'Mere pati ke hatyare Atiq Ahmed ko mukhya mantri ne mitti mein milaane ka kaam kiya."
The rare praise came as part of the marathon discussion on the state's 'Vision Document 2047." Pooja Pal credited the CM's 'zero-tolerance" policy against organised crime for delivering justice in the murder case of her husband who was gunned down in broad daylight in 2005, allegedly by the gang of mafia-politician Atiq Ahmed.
Who is Pooja Pal?
Pooja Pal's journey to this moment began in the modest Katghar locality of Prayagraj. Born into a poor family, her father earned a living repairing punctured tyres. To help support the household, Pooja took on small jobs alongside her studies—working in offices, hospitals, and even cleaning homes.
It was while working at a hospital that she met Raju Pal, a rising figure in the Bahujan Samaj Party. Their friendship grew into love, and on January 16, 2005, the couple married.
A Marriage Cut Short by Violence
Just nine days later, tragedy struck. On January 25, 2005, gunmen linked to Atiq Ahmed ambushed Raju Pal's convoy in broad daylight, killing him and two associates. The killing was widely seen as political retribution for Raju's recent electoral victory over Ashraf Ahmed, Atiq's brother, in the Allahabad West Assembly constituency.
At just 25, Pooja was widowed and her life turned into a battle for justice. She refused to bow to intimidation from the Ahmed gang and vowed to carry forward her husband's political legacy.
Pooja's Entry into Politics
When the by-election to Raju's seat was announced, BSP chief and then CM Mayawati personally handed Pooja the party ticket. She lost the bypoll, but her political journey had begun. In the 2007 assembly elections, Pooja again contested from Allahabad West and won, repeating her victory in 2012.
However, she lost the 2017 contest to BJP's Siddharth Nath Singh. Soon after, Pooja left the BSP and joined the Samajwadi Party, where Akhilesh Yadav offered her a ticket from Chail in Kaushambi district. She won the seat in 2022, marking her return to the Assembly.
Pooja's 20-Year-Old Fight With Atiq Ahmed
Through her political career, Pooja's fight against Atiq Ahmed remained central to her identity. Ahmed—a five-time MLA and former Lok Sabha MP—had over 100 criminal cases to his name, ranging from murder to extortion. For years, Pooja accused successive governments of shielding him.
That changed under Yogi Adityanath's tenure, as the UP government launched a high-profile crackdown on organised crime. Properties linked to mafia figures were demolished, assets seized, and key gang members arrested or neutralised.
The End of the Ahmed Brothers
The most dramatic chapter came in April 2023. On April 13, Atiq's son Asad, wanted in the murder of advocate Umesh Pal, was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi. Two days later, Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj while under police escort for a medical check-up at Colvin Hospital.
At 10.36pm on April 15, as the brothers spoke to the media, three assailants posing as journalists opened fire at point-blank range. One attacker pulled off Atiq's turban before shooting him in the head. About 20 bullets were fired, killing both on the spot. The shooters—Lavlesh Tiwari (22), Mohit alias Sunny (23), and Arun Maurya (18)—were overpowered and arrested immediately.
For Pooja, the killings marked a symbolic end to her two-decade fight.
Political Ripples
Her warm praise for Yogi Adityanath in the Assembly—a rare gesture across the bitter SP–BJP divide—immediately triggered speculation about her political future.
While Pooja has insisted her gratitude was personal and born out of justice served, party insiders viewed it as a breach of discipline. With her expulsion now official, political observers are watching closely for her next move, especially in eastern Uttar Pradesh, where her story still carries emotional weight among voters.

Declare ‘wet drought', pay Rs 50,000 to farmers for immediate relief, says NCP (SP) state chief Shashikant Shinde

Kolhapur: NCP (SP) state president Shashikant Shinde demanded state govt must declare a "wet drought" in the districts facing heavy and incessant rain over the past few days and grant financial aid of Rs 50,000 to the farmers who faced crop loss. Speaking in Satara on Monday, Shinde said in the past few days, there has been heavy rainfall across the state, the rivers are in spate, and crops have been damaged. "After the rainfall in May, we had demanded that state govt declare 'wet drought' in the state and compensate the farmers. We were then informed that a wet drought can be declared only after it meets specific criteria. In the past few days, heavy rain has been battering the state, causing rivers to flood and ready crops to be washed away. What else is required to qualify for the declaration of the wet drought?" asked Shinde. There is no formal term of 'wet drought' used by the authorities, but it generally means excessive rainfall in a short time causing heavy crop losses. Shinde said the heavy rain since May has affected kharif sowing. "Govt works for the contractors, industrialists, and the people living in the cities. It has completely ignored the farmers. We demand govt must pay Rs 50,000 per acre to the farmers as immediate relief. Also, we demand a special session of two days be called to discuss the plight of the farmers," added Shinde. Opposition meet to pick V-P candidate remains inconclusive, another round of parleys on August 19

The meeting of INDIA bloc leaders on Monday (August 18, 2025) at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's official residence to decide the Opposition candidate for the Vice-President's post remained inconclusive. 'A meeting of leaders of all Opposition parties in Parliament will be held at 12:30 PM tomorrow Tuesday Aug 19th at 10, Rajaji Marg,' Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. The Opposition bloc is likely to announce its choice on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). According to sources, the Congress president, who is also the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, was committed to fielding a candidate and not conceding without a contest. On Sunday night, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had reached out to the leaders of some Opposition parties, including Mr. Kharge for unanimously electing the new Vice-President. Sources said the Opposition wants to field a non-political face who has national standing and stature for the second-highest constitutional position in the country. The vice-presidential election, necessitated by the sudden resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, is scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nominations is August 21. Though no name was finalised, several possible candidates were considered. According to sources, on DMK's suggestion, Indian scientist Mylswamy Annadurai, who during his tenure at ISRO worked on two of the major missions of ISRO, namely Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan, was also discussed. The Trinamool Congress, however, was of the opinion that it would be 'reactive' to field another Tamilian in response to the NDA's vice-presidential candidate — Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan. Mr. Annadurai hails from the same Kongu region as Mr. Radhakrishnan. His scientific and apolitical background is an advantage. If a consensus on Mr. Annadurai's candidature emerges within the Opposition ranks and if he agrees to contest, it will help the DMK and its allies politically as they will not be seen as 'anti-Tamil' in opposing Mr Radhakrishnan. Another name that is said to have been discussed is Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, sources claimed. There were also some reservations among RJD and SP leaders about contesting the vice-presidential polls since the numbers are loaded in favour of the NDA. They argued that since the Opposition does not have the requisite numbers, it should let this election go in view of the upcoming Bihar polls, which they argued needs more attention. The SP also argued that the Opposition should focus its energy on its campaign against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. 'So far, we have presented a united front, and any cross voting in VP's election would send a wrong message,' a senior SP leader opined. (With inputs from B. Kolappan)

5 injured after high-rise spinning ride crashes at temple fair in Gujarat's Navsari

Five persons, including two minors, were injured after a high-rise spinning ride (drop tower) crashed at a crowded temple fair in Navsari district of Gujarat on Sunday night, police said. The accident occurred around 10:45 pm at a fair organised on the premises of Somnath Mahadev temple at Bilimora town as part of the Shrawan festival. Police said that the condition of the injured is reported to be stable. Navsari District Collector Kshipra Agre, meanwhile, formed a committee to probe the incident. Police said that the incident took place when the ride with a capacity of 32 seats was moving upward. Navsari Superintendent of Police Sushil Agrawal said: 'Eight passengers who were seated in the ride fell on the ground after the cable snapped off.' Police personnel present on the spot controlled the crowd and shifted the injured to hospital, the SP said. The injured have been identified as Rajiv Tandel (14), Dirdh Tandel (14), Roshni Vikash Patel (30), Disha Rakesh Patel (21), all residents of Navsari district, and Bakil Shaikh (30), the ride operator. Shaikh, who was treated in Billimora hospital, was later shifted to a private hospital in Surat, police said. Forensic officers and Navsari district administration officials visited the spot. 'Shivam Agency, run by one Viral Pithwa, a resident of Surendranagar, had obtained permission from the entertainment committee of the District Collector for the installation of 7 joy rides for the pilgrims visiting the fair,' Agrawal told The Indian Express. The SP said the police have launched an investigation into the matter. 'We are probing whether there is criminal negligence. The district administration has also started its probe. At present, we have not registered any offence. We will take further actions based on the probe report,' he said.
