Akali workers barge into Congress office over MLA Pargat's remarks in Jalandhar

Hindustan Times18-07-2025
Tensions prevailed in Jalandhar when the workers of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) barged into the office of the district Congress committee on Thursday after statements of Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh emerged in which he alleged that there was a 'deliberate delay' during the previous Capt Amarinder Singh government in the state in 'providing justice' in sacrilege incidents. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) protesting in Jalandhar.
The Akali workers, accompanied by youth Akali Dal activists, burnt effigies of the Congress leaders, alleging that Pargat Singh has exposed Congress' anti-Sikh stance.
YAD president Sarabjeet Singh Jhinjer said the Congress has a proven track record of being anti-Sikh from the 1984 riots to Operation Bluestar.
'The Congress has a long history of hurting Sikh sentiments. Now, with Congress MLA Pargat Singh admitting that the Congress government deliberately delayed justice in sacrilege cases for political gain, it reaffirms our stand that the party holds deep-rooted hatred toward the Sikh community,' he said.
He added that it is highly shameful that the Congress played politics on such a sensitive issue involving the sacrilege of holy granths.
'During their five years in power, they deliberately stalled justice just for cheap political gains. Pargat Singh must come forward and name those in the Congress government who were responsible for this delay,' the SAD leaders said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Jalandhar district Congress committee, Rajinder Beri, condemned the lawlessness created by Akali Dal workers at the party's office.
'They had no right to barge into our party office and hold a protest. Everyone knew the fact that serious sacrilege incidents happened during the SAD-BJP rule, and it was their leaders who orchestrated it with the help of fringe elements,' he said.
The party demanded stringent action against the Akali workers for creating a ruckus in the Congress office.

At key NDA meet, PM Narendra Modi's leadership, Armed Forces applauded on the success of Op Sindoor, Mahadev

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was felicitated by the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) parliamentary party on 5 August for his government's firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack under Operation Sindoor. The MPs of the BJP-led ruling alliance met here in their only second such meeting during Parliament's sessions since the government was formed in June 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting at the Parliament Library Building. The NDA members passed a resolution praising the success of two major anti-terror operations, Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also felicitated for his leadership during the operations. NDA leaders hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "exceptional leadership", saying his unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship and resolute command have not only steered the nation with purpose but also ignited a renewed spirit of unity and pride in the hearts of all Indians. The resolution noted recent global developments that show support for India's stand against terrorism. It highlighted that the United States has officially declared the Resistance Front (TRF), which was behind the Pahalgam attack, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group. It also noted that the BRICS Joint Declaration condemning the Pahalgam attack, avowing to "ensure zero tolerance for terrorism and reject double standards in countering terrorism", reflect a win for India's diplomatic stance against terrorism inflicted on its soil by Pakistan. The developments reflect India's rising clout on the global stage and international affirmation. After Operation Sindoor, the PM Narendra Modi ensured that 59 Members of Parliament from across parties visited 32 countries to present India's point of view. This is one of the most comprehensive global outreach ever launched by India, highlighting how the country has been a victim of terror and why a terror attack in any one part of the world is a crime against humanity across the globe, the resolution said. The participation of Opposition MPs shows the maturity of our democracy and the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, who believes that in matters of national interest, we are all together. The resolution also praised the courage of Indian security forces during the operations, calling their bravery a true example of dedication to the nation. Their courage highlights their unflinching devotion to protecting our nation. We pay our deepest condolences and respect to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack. At the meeting, condolences were offered to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Newly elected Members of Parliament were introduced to the Prime Minister during the meeting. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut were among key NDA leaders from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha who attended the meeting. The meeting took place amid an ongoing deadlock in Parliament, where the Opposition is demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and calling for its cancellation. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned today after protests by Opposition seeking a debate on SIR.

Supreme Court judges can't decide who is a true Indian: Priyanka Gandhi after SC raps Rahul

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday rallied behind her brother Rahul Gandhi after the Supreme Court rapped him over his remarks on the Army, saying it does not fall within the purview of the judges of the top court to decide who is a true Indian. She said her brother has the highest respect for the Army and will never say anything against it. As the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is Rahul Gandhi's duty to ask questions of the government, the Wayanad MP said. The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the proceedings against Gandhi before a Lucknow court over his remarks about the Army during his December 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. The top court, however, censured the Congress leader, saying if he is a true Indian, he would not say such a thing.

Amit Shah surpasses LK Advani – India's longest-serving Home Minister

Amit Shah became the longest-serving Union Minister of Home Affairs of India on Tuesday. With 2,258 days in office since assuming the role on May 30, 2019, Shah has now surpassed the previous record held by senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, news agency ANI reported. Shah's tenure has also overtaken that of Congress stalwart Govind Ballabh Pant, cementing his position as a key pillar in the current National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Shah achieved this milestone on August 5, the date he announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament in 2019, ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Before Amit Shah, the leaders who served the longest tenures as Home Minister include Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani. Previously, BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani had held the position for 2,256 days (from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004). In comparison, Amit Shah has been serving as Home Minister since May 30, 2019, and by August 4, 2025, he will have completed 2,258 days in office. Govind Ballabh Pant served from January 10, 1955, to March 7, 1961, a total of 6 years and 56 days. Shah became the country's Home Minister on May 30, 2019, and remained in the post until June 9, 2024. He again became Home Minister on June 10, 2024, and is serving. Apart from the Home Ministry, he is also the country's first Cooperation Minister. Amit Shah also served as Gujarat Home Minister and held the position of BJP National President. Amit Shah's tenure as Union Home Minister, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been marked by several transformative developments in India's internal security landscape. The historic abrogation of Article 370 and the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir's special status stand out as landmark decisions. The region has since witnessed a dramatic improvement in law and order, with stone pelting incidents virtually eliminated. Across the country, there has been a sharp decline in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism, Naxalism, and Maoist activities. Amit Shah's tenure has been marked by several transformative developments in India's internal security landscape. The peaceful progress in the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, the introduction of new criminal justice laws, and the successful enactment and rollout of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) further highlight this period. Multiple peace agreements in the North East have brought resolution to several long-standing insurgencies, making this a period of significant consolidation in the country's internal security framework.
