Tonight's rugby news as Wales exile tells Tandy to come and get him and Springboks hit by new hammer blow
Tonight's rugby news as Wales exile tells Tandy to come and get him and Springboks hit by new hammer blow The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Davies has issued a plain and simple message to Tandy (Image: Stephane Pillaud/Icon Sport via Getty Images) These are your evening rugby headlines on Monday, August 18. Wales exile tells Tandy to come and get him Welsh fly-half Sam Davies has issued a plain and simple message to Wales head coach Steve Tandy, saying he should be brought back into the international fold by the new national team boss. The former Ospreys and Dragons back has been tearing it up for Grenoble in the second tier of French rugby for the last two seasons, playing what he admits has been the best rugby of his career to date, and leading his team them to successive Pro D2 play-off finals. However, while his fine form has seen him win the adoration of fans and be crowned the league's best player in his first season at the club, it has not earned Davies an international recall, with the 30-year-old yet to add to his tally of eight Wales caps, the last of which he won in 2017. But with the starting fly-half position yet to be nailed down within the Wales squad, Davies has made his intentions clear to Tandy with a one-word message on social media. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Replying to a post that asked whether Tandy should be looking to recall Wales internationals including himself, Jake Ball and Liam Williams, Davies simply replied: "Yes." The Grenoble star has made no secret of his desire to pull on the red jersey again, despite question marks remaining over whether or not he is officially eligible to represent his country following his move to France. Article continues below While he falls short of the required 25 caps, Davies has previously claimed that he is still eligible to represent Wales due to a loophole in the controversial law. "I think I am allowed really because the rule around whether you get an offer from a region or a fair one is related to the cap rule," he told the RosbifsRugby podcast. "There's an argument to say I never got a fair offer and before this contract I've just signed, a couple of Welsh clubs were trying to talk to me but I didn't even entertain it so there were no offers." Speaking to The Times earlier this year, the playmaker again admitted that he didn't know why he wouldn't be eligible to play for Wales and, while he claimed the "time has gone now", he refused to rule out a return to the international stage. 'It's difficult because representing your country is something that, as a kid, is your dream — that's your ultimate goal," he said. "I achieved that and it wasn't to the level I wanted to get to. I thought I could have, and maybe should have, played for Wales more. But that time has gone now. 'It's not to say that it may never happen again because I don't know what the rules are. I don't think anyone knows what the rules are. I haven't been offered a contract in Wales so I don't know why I'm not eligible to play for Wales." Springboks hit by new hammer blow Things have gone from bad to worse for the Springboks after their shock Rugby Championship defeat to Australia, with talismanic captain Siya Kolisi ruled out for the next four weeks with injury. The 34-year-old got on the scoresheet for his side in their 22-38 loss to the Wallabies on Saturday, before leaving the field in the 45th minute. It has now been confirmed that he suffered a knee injury which will keep him out of action for the next month. As a result, Kolisi will miss this weekend's second clash with Australia in Cape Town, while he is also a major doubt for the double header against New Zealand in September. Confirming the news in a press conference on Monday, South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that Jesse Kriel would take over the captaincy from Kolisi this weekend. 'It's a grade two knee," said Erasmus as he gave an update on the back rower's injury status. "Some guys recover in four weeks, and some in six weeks. 'You saw how Siya recovered before the last World Cup [in 2023]. But it is not a World Cup year. It's big to play at Eden Park, but Eden Park is nothing if you lose at Ellis Park. 'Ïf you lose at Ellis Park and again in Cape Town, then it's not worth chasing a dream at Eden Park if you can't get it right at home. Siya is 34, and if you bring him back too early and chase the game, then he could be out for the rest of the year.' Unfortunately for Erasmus, Kolisi is one of four players who have been ruled out of their second clash with the Wallabies, with Pieter-Steph du Toit also out with concussion and Kurt Lee-Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe sidelined with knee and ankle injuries respectively. However, in a much-needed boost, both Damian de Allende and Cheslin Kolbe are available for selection again. Coach lands new job after Wales links Former Northampton Saints scrum coach Matt Ferguson has joined Harlequins as their new lead rugby transition coach, months after being linked with taking a role in the Wales set-up. In January, Ferguson announced he would be leaving Northampton at the start of the season, having won the Premiership title and reached the European Champions Cup final with the club in his final two seasons at Franklin Gardens. Before joining them in 2017, he helped England Women to the Rugby World Cup final, while he previously also worked for London Irish, Bristol and London Welsh. News of his planned exit led to suggestions that he had become a potential target for Wales, then led by Warren Gatland, with RugbyPass reporting that he may be offered the chance to become part of a new-looking coaching set-up. Of course, that never materialised and Ferguson has now taken up a new role with Northampton's PREM Rugby rivals, as part of a shake-up of head coach Danny Wilson's backroom team. After former director of rugby Billy Millard left the club earlier this year, Andrew Sanger has now taken up a newly-created role as general manager while Gerard Mullen becomes first team skills coach and Ferguson is the new lead rugby transition coach. In the role, Ferguson will lead the club's transition strategy and output and focus on building long-term first team depth through the Quins academy. Article continues below "Following a thorough post-season review, we are excited to confirm a refined and strengthened performance structure for the 2025-26 season," said Quins CEO Laurie Dalrymple. "These changes reflect our commitment to sustained success on and off the pitch, and I'm particularly pleased to congratulate Andrew Sanger MBE on his new role as general manager and to welcome Matt Ferguson to the club as lead rugby transition coach.''

Yoane Wissa goes nuclear and takes drastic action to force £35m Newcastle move
Brentford forward Yoane Wissa was not in the Bees' squad against Nottingham Forest with the west London side retaining a firm stance in the transfer position on the forward Yoane Wissa has moved to further distance himself from Brentford after missing the side's opening Premier League match, and deleted any mention of the club from his social media profile. The forward is holding out for a move this summer amid interest from Newcastle United. Wissa has trained independently of his team-mates aftere impressing his desire to exit the west London club. The striker, who scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, has just one year remaining his contract. The Bees have continued to block a move with their valuation for the forward having yet to be met. Brentford are said to have asked for £60million for the 28-year-old after rejecting a bid worth up to £30m from Newcastle earlier in the transfer window. And the latest news has seen any acknowledgement of Brentford removed from Wissa's Instagram profile. The DR Congo international has blacked out his profile picture and now only has photographs of himself outside of football or from his national side on display. Brentford boss Keith Andrews noted that Wissa was not ready to be involved ahead of the west London side's defeat to Nottingham Forest. The former Blackburn midfielder hopes the situation can soon be resolved. "It's a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss," Andrews said. "As far as I know nothing else has happened today, definitely didn't yesterday, so as it was really. "I have no idea what the situation will be, I have been up here since yesterday so we will deal with that during the week. Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later." Andrews warned that the arrival of Dango Ouattarra does not makeWissa's exit more likely. Brentford signed Dango from Bournemouth as a replacement for Bryan Mbeumo, who departed for Manchester United. As a result, the Kiwi does not anticipate Brentford's latest signing sparking a flurry of transfers resulting in Alexander Isak moving to Liverpool. 'I don't see it, Andrews said. "I see Dango as Bryan's replacement in terms of that area of the pitch, I see him as a versatile forward that I am really happy we have managed to get on board. We weren't really aware he would be available, as soon as we knew it was a pretty easy decision to get him on board. 'Thankfully the club have been able to do that and it is a really significant investment for us. It will be a brilliant investment.'

Hollie Doyle responds to losing riding job to Oisin Murphy: "A bit of a shock"
The record-breaking rider found out on Friday that her five-year association with owner-breeder Imad Al Sagar, for whom she rode Nashwa, was ending, with Oisin Murphy taking her spot Hollie Doyle has made her first comments s ince losing her job as number one rider for owner-breeder Imad Al Sagar. Britain's winningest female jockey, rider of more than 1,000 winners in Britain alone, became the first of her sex to win a Classic race when she captured the French Oaks, Prix de Diane, in 2022 on the Al Sagar-bred and owned filly Nashwa. Nashwa was to play a pivotal role in establishing Doyle on the sport's major stages as she and her jockey claimed three Group 1 victories, adding the Nassau and Falmouth Stakes, before she retired. The 28-year-old was appointed Al Sagar's first retained jockey in 2020, going on to ride 38 winners in the role. On her latest ride for the owner at Newbury on Friday she finished a neck second on Rouane in a novice's race for two-year-old fillies. Champion jockey Oisin Murphy is aboard his next runner, Gamrai, in a maiden at Windsor on Monday for which the once-raced John and Thady Gosden-trained colt is set to start second favourite. Going forward Murphy will ride as first jockey when not required by Qatar Racing under what connections called a 'change of strategy'. Al Sagar's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe told Mirror Online: 'Imad was looking for a change, a slight change of strategy if you like. 'We've had five fantastic years with Hollie, with Nashwa being the highlight in the Prix de Diane. Oisin is one of the leading jockeys and I think Imad wanted to use his services if he could. He continued: 'Imad spoke to Hollie the other day. She's been a big part of Blue Diamond and I hope will continue to do so.' Doyle expressed her disappointment at losing the role in her blog for At The Races, her first comments since the news broke. She said: 'Unfortunately, I was informed on Friday I'd lost my long-standing retainer with leading owner Imad Alsagar. It came as a bit of a shock, particularly at this stage of the season. 'I've been a part of Imad's operation for five years, riding 38 winners including at the highest of levels. We've enjoyed numerous stakes winners, a Royal Ascot winner and a Classic winner with the wonderful Nashwa in the Prix de Diane in 2022, followed by two further Group 1 successes. 'I have nothing but the utmost respect for Imad and would like to thank him for giving me such an amazing opportunity at a formative stage of my career. I wish him and the team the very best of luck in the future.'
