BBC Sports Personality of the Year odds: Kelly the new favourite
The Arsenal forward's inspirational performances from the bench helped England through to the final of the summer tournament, in which she scored the winning penalty in a victory against Spain.
This resulted in Kelly becoming the leader in the SPOTY betting, moving ahead of the Masters winner and previous favourite Rory McIlroy. Kelly's England team-mate Hannah Hampton is third favourite.

Who will be the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year?
Let's take a look at the leading contenders to become the next BBC Sports Personality of the Year, along with some fringe candidates whose prices could drop.
Chloe Kelly – evens
A footballer couldn't really ask for a better year than the one Kelly is enjoying. The Londoner left Manchester City to return home to her first club Arsenal in January, where she ended the season with a victory in the Champions League final against Barcelona.
Despite not being a starter in England's Euro 2025 team, her contributions from the bench in the knockout stages were key to the Lionesses' triumph. She sparked the quarter-final comeback against Sweden, scored the winner to eliminate Italy in the semi-final and then created the equaliser against Spain in the final, before converting the decider from the spot in the penalty shootout.
Rory McIlroy – 2/1
If Kelly's achievements in 2025 are going to be hard to beat, McIlroy's claim to the SPOTY crown is based on the success he has enjoyed over his entire career. He won the Masters in 2025 to complete a career grand slam of the major championships.
Just six golfers in history have achieved this and McIlroy is the only Brit to do it. The feat could be enough to swing the vote in the Northern Irishman's favour and, if he's part of a European Ryder Cup victory on US soil in September, you can expect him to return as favourite.
Hannah Hampton – 9/1
Casual fans of women's football might have been surprised to see Hampton in goal for England at Euro 2025 after Mary Earps decided to retire from international football before the finals, but her performances at the tournament justified Sarina Wiegman's decision to pick the Chelsea keeper.
She saved two penalties in each of the shootout victories against Sweden in the quarter-finals and Spain in the final. This followed a domestic treble with Chelsea in the 2024-25 season, crowning a brilliant year for a footballer who had to overcome a serious eye condition as a child.
Lando Norris – 10/1
Norris is currently battling with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to land the 2025 Formula One World Championship.
If he can win that contest, then Norris will be a contender to be named Sports Personality of the Year, with F1 drivers such as Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Lewis Hamilton having all previously been bestowed with this honour.
Luke Littler –20/1
Littler is hampered by the fact that darts is not taken as seriously as other sports, otherwise he would be priced much shorter, having finished second in SPOTY last year.
The 18-year-old has had a remarkable 2025 in which he has already won the World Championship, UK Open and World Matchplay titles. You wouldn't bet against him eventually winning this award, but no darts player has ever claimed it and he might need a year without such strong candidates.
Other contenders
When betting on Sports Personality of the Year, you have to look at coming events that may catapult an athlete into contention.
Rugby union player Ellie Kildunne is already a relatively short price at 25/1, having been a key part of the England team who won the Six Nations. If the team were to also win the 2025 Rugby World Cup that starts this month, then the odds of the reigning world player of the year should shorten.
The US Open tennis takes place in August and September and a British victory could see a tennis star move into single figures. Emma Raducanu won SPOTY in 2021 after her surprise victory at Flushing Meadows and both she and Jack Draper are priced at 66/1.
A number of athletes are also hovering around that price point, due to the 2025 Athletics World Championships taking place in September.
The likes of Keely Hodgkinson (55/1), Dina Asher-Smith (66/1) and Matthew Hudson-Smith (66/1) all have a chance of being on the shortlist if they land gold in Tokyo.

Arsenal transfer news: Eberechi Eze warning sent as Mikel Arteta questioned over deal
Arsenal have enjoyed a busy summer so far, making six new signings, and Mikel Arteta is keen to continue strengthening his squad ahead of the new Premier League season Arsenal have spent almost £200million on new signings so far this summer, bringing in Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, manager Mikel Arteta is hoping to make some more signings before the window slams shut. He is also looking to offload some fringe players, having already sold Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos and released Jorginho, Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Gunners have finished second for the past three Premier League season and will be hoping to win the title this year for the first time since 2004. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest transfer news and rumours from around the Emirates... Juventus eye Kiwior According to a report from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are interested in signing Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior. The report states that Lloyd Kelly, who completed a permanent move to Juventus this summer after initially joining them on loan in the January transfer window, could be set for a return to the Premier League. As a result, Juventus are said to have begun looking at potential replacements for Kelly and Kiwior is among them. However, the report also notes that Wolfsburg's Konstantinos Koulierakis is also on their radar. Eze warning Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, but former Gunners defender Mikael Silvestre believes he should remain at Crystal Palace. Speaking to Hajper, Silvestre said: "Eberechi Eze to Arsenal? I don't think it'd be good for him, to be honest, because there is a lot of competition and because he has so much joy and freedom at Crystal Palace. "Going to Arsenal would, I think, be difficult because of the competition for places. But I like him a lot. Since his early days, he has been terrific. It's a shame he's had quite a lot of muscle injuries and he's missed some parts of the season. But whenever he's fit and ready, he is a top player." Gyokeres doubts Arsenal forked out around £63.7m to sign a new striker in Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but Premier League icon Paul Scholes has questioned whether Mikel Arteta "really wanted him". Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes said: "[Arsenal needed a] centre forward, I just wonder if you've chosen the right one. Because there was a lot of um-ing and ah-ing about it, I wondered if Mikel Arteta really wanted him, as the main one he wants? I'm not too sure, and he's got him now."

Giants QB Russell Wilson touts Brian Daboll's ‘beautiful mind'
August 7 - He has yet to throw a pass in a game setting for the New York Giants, but new quarterback Russell Wilson, a 10-time Pro Bowler, is already singing the praises of head coach Brian Daboll's offensive knowledge and understanding. He expressed his thoughts on Daboll and other topics while speaking with reporters on Wednesday. "Daboll's got a beautiful mind, how he sees the game, he's coached tremendous football players, he's won Super Bowls, he's been around winning -- national championships, all that stuff," Wilson said. "... I think that the best part is in terms of the knowledge and what we get to share back and forth is pretty cool. "... Just over the years, all my experience, his experience, how we see the game the same way." Wilson also sang the praises of assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who will continue calling plays for the Giants in 2025. "Obviously Kaf's played the game, played the position, he sees it like the quarterback does and he's got a great viewpoint of the game," said Wilson. "We get to spend a lot of time together in the quarterback room and I think Kaf is a really brilliant mind, too. "I think the ability to share ideas, the collaboration, is what's really special here." Kafka, with the Giants' coaching staff since 2022, also highlighted the importance of communication with his new pivot. "Yeah, just opening up (those) lines of communication, having dialogue on plays that he likes, things that I like, things that are within the offense already, maybe there's some crossover, maybe there's some new thoughts," said the former journeyman QB. "It's just about opening those lines of communication." After two down years with the Denver Broncos in 2022 and 2023, Wilson started 11 regular-season games for the playoff-bound Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, posting a 6-5 record while passing for 2,482 yards (225.6 per game), 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. He added another two scores on the ground. Now the 2013 Super Bowl champion is adapting to another new team in New York and transitioning well. "It's going great," said Wilson. "I think guys are working their butts off, man. We're battling every day, going against a really good defense every day, too, so it's even better. "You always want practice to be harder than the games, that mentality of that. ... I think we're getting better every day." Wilson has also expressed his eagerness to play alongside talented second-year receiver Malik Nabers. "I mean, that was (the) first thing I told you guys when I watched him on film. ... It was just his explosiveness," said Wilson of the 2024 sixth overall pick out of LSU. "Once he catches the football, there's only so many people in the world that can do it like he can and I think he's one of the best in the world to do it. "He's going into a second year of it all and it's all fresh and all new, but he's definitely experienced in terms of how he sees the game, his mentality attacking the football in the air. ... It's going to be a special thing. I'm excited to play with him, obviously." At age 36, Wilson added that he's already enjoying playing for his fourth NFL team. "I love this locker room, the guys, just the fellowship that we have together all the way from the lunchroom to the film room after practice," Wilson said. "...It's been great, man. I am truly grateful to be a New York Giant." --Field Level Media

Chelsea step up efforts to sign Garnacho and Simons in attacking reshuffle
Chelsea are to step up attempts to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United and Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig and could sell Nicolas Jackson, as they continue to reshape their attacking options. The club have brought in Liam Delap, João Pedro and Jamie Gittens, and moves for Garnacho and Simons are understood to be their priority. Garnacho has played no part in United's pre-season and is thought to be available for about £50m, although Chelsea are understood to be reluctant to pay that. The Argentina forward is believed to be keen to move to Stamford Bridge after Ruben Amorim made clear the 21-year-old is not part of his plans at Old Trafford. Chelsea have yet to make an official approach but are likely to do so, with United seeking to balance their books as they close on the signing of Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig. Chelsea are in talks with the German club over Simons, who is understood to have agreed personal terms despite interest from Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old, who can play in several attacking roles, joined Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in January for €50m after two successful loan spells. He is expected to cost about €70m (£61m) and Leipzig are targeting Liverpool's Harvey Elliott as a potential replacement. Jackson is understood to prefer to stay at Chelsea despite the arrivals of Delap and Pedro dropping him down the pecking order, but Chelsea are believed to be willing to sell the Senegal striker for the right price. Newcastle could be an option if, as expected, they miss out on Sesko, and Jackson also has interest from Milan and other Italian clubs but Chelsea could demand £80m. Chelsea's 19-year-old Spanish striker Marc Guiu is poised to join Sunderland on loan having completed his medical on Wednesday, and Everton have completed the £28m signing of the midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury‑Hall on a five-year contract. Burnley are closing in on signing Armando Broja for £20m and are likely to pay a similar fee for Lesley Ugochukwu. Borussia Dortmund are also in talks with Chelsea over a permanent deal for Carney Chukwuemeka, who spent part of last season on loan in Germany. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Chelsea have sold Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, Djordje Petrovic and João Félix for combined fees that could reach well above £100m. They are also hoping to offload Raheem Sterling, who spent last season on loan at Arsenal and has been linked with clubs in Turkey, together with Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Christopher Nkunku and Ben Chilwell. The Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato became Chelsea's latest summer signing when his £37m move from Ajax was confirmed on Sunday.
